We outscored UK over the final thirty minutes of that game, but the difference between very good and great teams is the ability to play 40 minutes. We never really got that this year, and that inconsistency burned us many times. I'm looking forward to seeing a more consistent team, though I admittedly don't know that we will have that next year.

What would you have said about freshman year TJ without this hindsight?

Theres no way to know how good a 23-24 year old KJ or WR would look in college, and there never will be bc neither would be 23 going on 24 even if they stayed all 4 years

Hell, there were people on this very site who didnt buy him as a first option type player when he originally transferred here. He was coming of his 3rd year at the time
I just meant that neither one of them are as athletic as Shannon was and never will be.

All-American at his collegiate peak, versus a couple of cute youngsters showing promise for some day while nuzzling around the actual goal. The youngsters did their snuggly best, but were levels short of TSJ when comparing each of the three stars final year of college.

This team was built for the NCAA tournament. Sadly, we never had the time to fix the issues that caused us to fall against top teams. I believe if we didn't have the illness/injury issues, we'd be a 3 seed and probably on our way to the second weekend again. That's why the regular season matters.

I'm not extremely disappointed with the outcome, as we saw all season long what our flaws were and that we struggled to adapt in real time. Good luck to KJ and Will in the NBA. I would have loved to see Will play a few more games.

Give me KB, Tre, Morez, and Tomi and build around that with some pure shooters. I know we are getting Sarr, but we need 2-3 shooters with some height. We can't be this bad from three again. Next, we need to upgrade from Hamer and get TA's replacement.
Need to get older and more athletic along with that shooting. I know that's easier said than done and everyone is looking for that but way too many times did Illinois remind me athletically of some of Frans Iowa teams.

If White, Tomi, Morez, and Boswell stay, that's a good start compared to this year.

The 2 freshmen are athletic?

Ben & Jake? Are they staying?

A few portal guys, one center, couple of tall athletic shooting wings.

Neither one will ever be as good as TSJ was in his last year.
fair enough, though i dont think anyone would read what you wrote that way

You called out his last year.......TSJ was routinely the fastest and best run/jump player on the court from like year 2 on

Oops quoted the wrong post ha, meant to quote the one where you clarified that you were really just saying WR/KJ wouldnt be as athletic. my bad

Really hope we devote a disproportionate share of our NIL in keeping the core guys here … the continuity of improved chemistry and continued improvement from another year together is worth more than a supposed talent upgrade at one position.
There should be a ton of easily correlatable data around the portal over the past years and how it affected team winning across multiple variables. It's a really interesting question and one I hope out team is investigating. We have amazing researchers that can help with this.

Couldn't agree more. I'd rather have Tomi, Morez, and Kylan than basically anyone in the portal. (I would also like to retain Tre, Ben, and Jake, but to a lesser extent.)

Not nearly as ridiculous as this take is. He's projected Top 5, maybe 6 now. How does another year in college move that at all? He's not gonna suddenly start jumping out of the gym and become a Gary Payton lockdown defender.
Jfc and I’m back in.😑

Maybe go back and read all of my posts?

The hypothetical argument started when Gritty brought up Ayo, who stayed 3 years. My (again…hypothetical) response was based on KJ following a similar path. NOT THAT HE SHOULD FFS.

Currently KJ has dropped out of the Top 10 (11,12,13)in most of the mocks I’ve checked, with Tankathon showing him 6.

I suggested that KJ would be the #1 overall pick in this HYPOTHETICAL scenario. Not that he would improve with one more year of college ball.

The difference between #1 and #6 contract is ~ $4-5 million. The difference between #1 and # 12 is ~$6-7 million.

If that is not significant to any of you, congrats. Your Loyalty Beach House must be spectacular.

IMO I have heard about 10 names listed in the top 5 for draft picks and I would take all 10 before KJ

Flagg, Queen, Harper, Baily, Johnson (Texas), Edgecombe, Maluach, Ricardson, Fears. Knueppel
Then a group around KJ (based on NBA team need) Newell, KJ, McNeely, Clifford (Colorado St) and several foreign players.

insiders, will he ever see the court in meaningful fashion?
Not on a top 20 type team. Top 20 teams have to be high end and complete now with NIL and unlimited transferring. There is just no room for rotational players to not be high end if you are talking about top 20 type teams.

That's a high bar -TSJ is/was NBA level athletic. I think WR made a ton of progress in his year here in every respect --strength, skill, mentality, etc. I could see him developing into a pretty high level player at the next level, even if his raw athleticism is a notch below TSJs. WR is VERY skilled.
