It depends upon how you define effort. The image in my brain of Ben getting the ball ripped away from his hands repeatedly during multiple games last season is a tough one to make go away.

But last season aside, I'm 100% in favor of merit-based minutes allocation. If reports are correct that Ben has added significant strength and muscle mass, Ben shows a better nose for the ball in the 4 role, he nails 3s more consistently, and Mirkovic has some growing pains adapting to the college game, then Ben definitely should be the first guy off the bench.

My issue is when someone says so and so should get playing time just because they're a veteran. Everyone should be given the playing time they earn.
I think you may be hallucinating that image because Ben had a grand total of 17 turnovers all last season — by far the lowest on the team by those with significant minutes.

Now KJ on the other hand? For all the good things that he did, he was notorious for having the ball stripped by a defender.

Are you sure you're not thinking about Kasparas with regards to the turnovers? He was the #1, #2 and #3 violator. Ben didn't turn it over much.

I was referring to rebounding. The game that sticks out for me was the game in Welsh Ryan when Ben had better position for the ball multiple times and just got out muscled/hustled for it. Those situations wouldn't be scored as turnovers.

Good scrimmage game. They're going to be legitimately good this year. They could be on winning side of a 5/12 game this year.

Good scheduling.
ISU is accustomed to playing before small crowds; they normally get about 3,000 for home games, sometimes smaller on the road, depending on the opponent. They will relish a game at SFC. You never know how coaches approach exh. games. Often they don't prioritize winning, but the opportunity to give major minutes to backups. Different player combinations can be a pretty high priority.

I'm more of a Ben believer than most probably, but I definitely had to double check this one- interestingly enough, he actually had the 39th best TO rate in college basketball (according to KenPom), so he not only was the best on our team, but was also one of the best generally at not turning the ball over.

Wasn’t Ben essentially catch and shoot or pass immediately? Not a lot of chances to give the ball to the other team.

I mean, there are definitely opportunities for turnovers when swinging the ball around the wing, either throwing it away or getting trapped. Also, if you compare other catch-and-shoot guys from years past, none of them really get close to as low a TO rate as BH. This is probably why his efficiency numbers are high.

Z is likely going to be the primary alternate to Tomi at C. If they both play 20-30 minutes per game - Tomi on the higher end with Z on the lower - then that leaves a lot of minutes for other players at the 4 - maybe 30 (BU trying to play Z and Tomi together may be like his trying to play Coleman and Dain together - talked about it more than he did it). You could start Z at the 4 but someone else is going to play the majority of time there. I think either Z or Ben starts early in the early season and maybe Mirk works himself into the mix later. The only wild card in that is if Wagler really comes on and BU decides to play small ball (or if Jakstys contributes at the 5 which I don't think many are predicting). For all we know BU might just start Ben just to troll a lot of you on here - he seemed to appreciate what Ben gave him last year (especially the no TOs lol) until Will came out of his slump. I am looking forward to seeing how this plays out.
I know I like options and I assume so does coach underwood :)

This made me LOL, but let’s also not pretend like KJ didn’t have some particularly frustrating and bewildering turnovers. 😂

This is funny but to be fair KJ had a Curbelo-level turnover rate, and definitely turned it over way more than a typical primary ballhandler, especially on a top 25 team.

Don't worry, Kevin Kevingtongram will break it all down for us at 10. He's a statistical Mozart.

Many of KJ’s turnovers were just so maddening because a defender would be super close and he’d just nonchalantly keep dribbling and the defender would easily poke the ball away. But to be fair, KJ was a freshman. Had he stayed multiple years, I would expect him to improve on that each season.

Bens weakness was defense not turn overs

No where left but to go up for BIG BEN. I think he has a much better this season. Defense especially. He looks stronger than he was. Hopefully a little more lateral quickness was added to that.

To be fair at the d1 level there are hundreds of guys limited to being spot up shooters so sporting a top 1percentile TO rate is still nothing to sneeze at

What other spot up shooters have we had who sported a .8 TO per 40? Luke goode was close in recent years at .9.

Jake davis played the exact same role on O and averaged over 1 TO/40 (and thats still really good IMHO)

I haven't read the entire thread so maybe it's already posted. The Nov 24 game against UTRGV...UTRGV features an assistant named Dustin Yoder from Bethany, IL. He played at Lake Land, then was a manager at the U of I with Weber, worked at Parkland, so he has lots of local ties - really happy for him that this game was scheduled!

November 3, 2025*Jackson State
November 7, 2025*FGCU
November 11, 2025*Texas Tech
November 14, 2025*Colgate
November 22, 2025*LIU
November 24/25, 2025*UTRGV
December 28, 2025*Southern

I like the non-con slate. I like how it works for ratings/seedings. I hate the home game schedule. 7 games, 1 good, 1 ok, 5 cakewalks.
Which one is the okay? FGCU? FWIW, Jackson State, FGCU, and Southern are all preseason 150-200 on Torvik. Colgate, LIU, and UTRGV are 250-300 so not quite as bottom feeder as a lot of the opponents they’ve had recently.
