Underwood's tough guy, Pizza Hut parking lot, "to be the best you have to play the best" schedule is a huge mistake. You don't get better from losing. You don't learn anything from Duke kicking your butt in MSG. Somebody tell Brad to google Curt Cignetti. Or better yet, google Indiana football nonconference schedule. Cignetti is the best coach in America. Why is he hell bent on scheduling cupcakes?
Don't tell Tom Izzo that. Betting he would not trade any of his countless deep NCAA tournament runs for better season records.
Then hire Izzo. Brad's job is to make the Sweet Sixteen. With his tough guy schedule he's done that one time. And if it wasn't for Mark Sutter, he wouldn't have even done that.

Why assume we’ll lose those games against good opponents? What value does beating up on mediocre teams do for your resume? Or worse, what happens if we drop a game to a bad opponent? And why on earth wouldn’t you want your team to have already played quality opponents during the regular season when it’s a guarantee you’ll face good teams in the tournament?

Because in college football losses matter a lot more. In basketball its all about having Q1 games, winning or losing almost doesn't matter as much as playing them as long as you have a couple wins.

Out of MIZ, Bama, TENN, TTU, UConn... if we go 3-2, that's SIGNIFICANTLY more beneficial than going 12-0 against total cupcakes. You need Q1 wins to build your NET.
You do realize that a lot of those non-con schedules in football are scheduled years in advance, right? Cignetti likely had little to no control over the ones they currently have. Hoosiers are set to face Notre Dame, but not until 2030 and 2031.
By that logic Izzo has been to the Sweet 16 no less than 16 times. Hardly a fluke. Hardly because of Mark Sutter alone. Hardly a bad strategy to schedule tough to get ready for the Big Dance. I think you just defeated your own argument without any help.

Mirk has the build and game to be an absolute monster in college basketball. That size and strength, coupled with a bit of handles, court vision, shiftiness, and nose for the ball, is a heck of a combo. You can see why the staff is willing to run offensive sets through him already. He’s a matchup nightmare. I said this in the game thread, and I don’t mean to put too much pressure on the young man, but he has a lot of Tyler Hansbrough to his game.

Hansbrough was a bully with the IQ of a brick. Mirkovic may not ever get to that level of scoring but he has a lot more versatility to his game.
I have higher expectations for the University of Illinois basketball coach than the sweet 16. I know they are not there yet.

There's a big difference between basketball and football and how they look at tough losses. It's not nearly the same thing theres not much to lose with any of those non con games and alot to gain you got 2-3 or 3-2 in them it looks great theyre all bonafide quad 1A games.
