So am I correct so far in that this is who we believe is most likely currently on next year's roster?

Sencire Harris
Luke Goode
Dain Dainja
Ty Rodgers
RJ Melendez
Niccolo Moretti
Amani Hansberry
Dravyn Gibbs-Lawhorn
Maybe Hawkins and/or Shannon, Jr.

That means we need possibly 5 guys from the portal. I see for sure a need for a point guard with some size, a shooting guard, a small/power forward that can shoot and a big body.

2-4. BU likes to keep an open ride during the season

It’s 6 years later. Whatever the program looked like 6 years ago is irrelevant. The year that Groce got fired:

Groce’s 5th year. 18-14 (8-10)
Underwood’s 6th year: 20-13 (11-9)

Not that much different. Underwood’s issues is his record without Kofi, and the yearly attrition of key players that will prevent this team from getting to the next level.

Most fans aren’t happy with this level. Better than Groce isn’t enough. Not 6 years into a regime.

Just my opinion
I must have missed Groce’s BTT championship and regular season championship in the years prior….🙄🙄

There's was reference to an incident with Epps in late February/early March, unrelated to the concussion.

Can one of the insiders confirm what topic that incident was about (NIL, coaching style, expectations of role, etc...).

Seems like an incident points to one specific thing, so hard to envision what it'd be about.

Wish the best to Mr. Epps. Thank him for his efforts and contributions this year. This is the new era of college BB we live in, sucks to lose good players but it is probably going to happen every year at every program.

I wish there was a single guy on that list that I felt totally confident just penciling in for a reliable 30 minutes a game against any opponent rain or shine, but there just isn't.

And ge will give up close to 1500 points as well.
From a pure basketball standpoint, anyone spinning this as anything other than a huge failure is kidding themselves.

Jayden will score upwards of 1,500 points the next 3 years.

Of course, a lot more to the game than that-but scorers like him do not grow on trees.

Ultimately, he and his circle didn't exactly align with how things are run here (among other things).

A true shame-really disappointed in how things transpired with this one. I truly thought he could be our Frank Mason, and I think he'll be in that echelon at his next stop out East.

I’m crazy and dumb I know that already. But if I had to choose (not saying there was a choice) I’d actually choose Sencire over Jayden. Sencire showed flashes of what can be on offense while having a much better career defensively ahead of him. Maybe like a reverse Trent career path. Obviously needs to improve shooting (as did Epps) and strength. There’s just something about him I love.

And wish Epps the best he will be solid somewhere like the Big East.

I know we’ll probably never know but I’d love to know about the “incident” that seems to have led to Epps transferring.
In a very brief and simple explanation....Jayden didn't like how often he was being told he is killing us defensively and Brad was going to keep telling him how poor he was doing defensively/how many scouting errors he had and one of them finally hit a tipping point.

So Mr. Epps gets injured in practice. He is out several games and now decides to leave. What happened? He was a starter and played some good ball. Especially after Clark moved on. Coach Underwood keeps his practices closed so that he can have his secluded time with the team. I suppose to "build his culture". He should be transparent as to what happens in these practices.

Every college basketball practice is closed to the public and media

Really don't understand this one. Sad.
I'm not one to throw stones at BU, but is there any credence to the idea that coach has a bad or negative style with these kids?

Tell me you never played team sports without telling me you never played team sports.

Really appreciate you sharing! If that’s what drove him away, I have no issues with him leaving. He was not good defensively and if you’re going to win everyone has to be accountable. Disappointing for sure.

There are two obvious critiques to the "look at the coach's record without this one great player" argument with BU.

1. BU is very, very capable of bringing in more great players in the future, indeed Kofi isn't even the best and most impactful player he's recruited to Illinois.
2. BU's record inclusive of SFA and OSU is in fact pretty darned respectable without Kofi

I would just complicate that picture in one respect though. Kofi was an extremely unique player, and by everyone's account including BU's Kofi forced us to play in a certain unique way that evolved a bit over the three years but in which we generally thrived. Kofi's are few and far between and even if we can get individual talents on that scale, we're never going to play in quite the same way, so there is some degree of singularity with him as a figure.

I do think this thing looks best with a back to basket center anchor. Dainja is neither quite as good nor exactly the same as Kofi, but he provides a similar function. I think we ought to keep looking for guys like that given the success they've had in augmenting this system. As opposed to always trying to move back toward positionless trappy switchy ball which hasn't seemed to work for BU at the high major level.
Ayo was more impactful off the court. On the court, Kofi was far and away the most impactful player BU has recruited. In fact, I'll argue that he was the most impactful to wear an Illinois basketball uniform in my lifetime. There was no team that we played that had a player that could match up with Kofi, so the other teams entire game plan was centered around how to mitigate his presence.

Agree that BU has shown the ability to bring in top notch talent, whether it be from the HS ranks or the portal. Assuming either Hawk or TSJ stick around for next year and we find a PG in the portal we will be a level below MSU and probably OSU in terms of talent, but should be comparable to anyone else in the Big 10.
