I love my alma. I love watching basketball. I'll always be invested in this program and spend some time on this site. But man, I think it's time for me to temper my investment. I absolutely respect that players need to do what's best for them, but, frankly, so do I. I'm a sentimental fan. I love watching our players grow, improve, and, ultimately, succeed over their time here. That's part of what's made college basketball so engaging for me. Now, I'm just not sure the proposition is worth it when I no longer expect a player to stay for any period of time. I don't know. I have no doubt BU will figure out this coming season and get enough talent for us to compete, but the magic of college basketball is rapidly evaporating. What we're left with feels far lesser.

Feels like Tyger would only come to the Illini if he knew TSJ and Hawkins are coming back for one more year, otherwise with this roster construction, location, and just chances of winning he would have much better options at other places.
Because we ALL know entering the transfer portal and deciding on a school are completely sensical decisions.

I'll still tune in to every game for sure, but yeah this whole revolving door portal thing sure takes away a great part of supporting a college basketball team.

I applaud your honesty. It’s pretty hard to argue with any of that. If you weren’t at least a little sentimental…you wouldn’t be much of a fan.

With all due respect, you'll have to trust Underwood on this one given his track record of bringing in transfers that make a difference going back to Feliz.
Yeah, I won't be thrilled if Underwood lands Harmon unless it's as a bench piece and he's got bigger fish to catch in the portal. Time will tell.

Now, more than ever, we are all just rooting for laundry...

I'm rooting for Loyalty. I'm rooting for us to have a team take us on a magical ride. I done worrying about which guys get it done. Get me the best players we can get, & I'll get irrationally emotional about their results.

It's all I know.

Agree.

It's to the point where I don't pay attention to recruiting anymore because what's the point? I'll still watch college basketball because they games can be really entertaining, but as far as being 100% committed to everything Illini? Probably not

I know it's the new norm, but I hate the new reality in college basketball. I'm not old by any stretch, but I miss watching guys grind to develop.
It's going to be really hard to cheer a "new team" every year.
It seems we are getting hammered with 2 major changes happening at the same time - NIL and the no sitout transfer rule. Just injects total chaos into many rosters.

I wonder what it would be like if they implemented these more in a stepwise manner...

Edit: Speaking from a fan perspective, only...

Yes, same here. But I have come to terms with it in that it is still better than nothing. Hang in there.

This isn't college sports. This isn't the bargain. We can all feel it.

And I'm tellin' ya, the coming conference landscape will only heighten this.

Ok, I apologize for this, guys, I really do.
Got Curbelo to sign a hat last year and he enters the portal at the end of that season.
Got RJ to sign a hat this summer, he enters the portal at the end of this season.
Now, am I leaving out some other factors that may have played a role, like on- and off- court struggles, the fluidity of recruiting, NIL, etc? Absolutely.
But clearly if I stop getting autographs on hats, we'll see more continuity in the roster going forward.

In my view, “the magic of college basketball” was built upon young adults being denied the right to earn a living and incredibly limited in their options based on the false concept of “student athletes,” while coaches, ADs, etc. made millions. We aren’t left with “far lesser”— we have “far fairer.”

And if you don’t like the new sport, that is totally acceptable and a reasonable decision!

But in my view, a sport built on taking advantage of kids has died. Good riddance.
