Illini Coaching Staff

Give JW a one year contract and review it on an annual basis. If he doesn't produce, cut him loose.

What assistant would take that deal? Would you take a 1 year deal with a company and review every year if you have a family? As a coach you want stability, if Illinois offered him a 1 year deal to "prove himself" even after he has proved himself for a few years here, I would fully expect him to leave. I would hope he would leave actually, he deserves better thant hat.

Underwood will recruit well if he wins with his style of play. I think he can do that with good talent, which will then help him get even better players. It's that simple.

Agree 100%

No one is questioning Underwood's ability to coach and coach-up players. Here's hoping he can take what he has here now and built it into a consistent winner with his style of play. If that happens, look out Big Ten. The sleeping giant is about to wake up again!!! :thumb:

Why is everyone acting like Walker is only involved with Tilmon. He's also instrumental in Smith, and we aren't sure how instrumental he might have been with past recruits like Kipper, Black, or Tejon.

In addition, there are numerous STL area targets that we will pursue in the class of '18 and '19 and more going forward. Walker's value is beyond retaining Tilmon.

So...

1. Brad Underwood can't recruit
2. He will get fired if he doesn't make the NCAA's next year
3. We should give Walker a one year deal if he cant produce fire him
4. Smith isn't close with Walker
5. Walker isnt 300,000 good

Wow!!

After listening to JW's post game interview I will be amazed if he stays. Only reason he is still here is the players. Loyalty is too strong for him to stay. That said I am still impressed with him and wish he would be offered and accept.

lol, k.

You missed the part about Underwood getting poached by K State next year (despite #2 - missing tournament)

How does this make sense? Where should he go if he is being loyal to Groce, Ford and Parham? Does he quit in protest? Does he send a message to Whitman, who was super-tight with Groce and did this respectfully?

There was a scout article today that suggests that Whitman is fully in JW's corner:
“I feel strongly about Jamall,” Whitman said. “I’m very grateful for the leadership he’s been providing our program through this interim phase and the work he’s done on behalf of the program for the last five years. What I don’t do as a matter of practice is mandate to any coach who they have to put on their staff. I don’t think that’s fair. But I will recommend, and I will suggest. He and I certainly had extensive conversations about Jamall. But ultimately that decision will be with (Underwood).”

So any ideas about assistant coaches?

Going way out on a limb here, but one guy I don't think will be added is Shaquille O'Neal:

"Fans of the Flat Earth Theory have found an enormous new ally in the form of legendary basketball star and media personality Shaquille O'Neal. Responding to last month's furor surrounding NBA player Kyrie Irving expressing his belief in the Flat Earth Theory, Shaq gave the controversial conspiracy theory a ringing endorsement.

"It's true. The Earth is flat," he declared during a recent edition of his podcast.

His reasoning for this conclusion was that "I drive from Florida to California all the time, and it's flat to me. I do not go up and down at a 360-degree angle."

Shaq went on to ask, rhetorically, "you mean to tell me that China is under us? China is under us? It's not. The world is flat."

When confronted with the fact that photos have been taken of the round Earth from space, his response was one that would make any conspiracy theorist proud: "satellite imagery could be drawn and made up."

Is Ga65 Tha-Anti-Kidd? So much negativity so early.

I think Jamall loves C-U and would like to stay IF the money is there, IF the system looks like a good fit, and IF the coaches get along well together.

Right now there's a lot up in the air with the tourney, with the new coach keeping his distance, and with the recruits. Once the tourney is over things will proceed at a very, very rapid pace.

We have two jobs - support the current team to advance and win as Malcolm or Tracy said and to wait patiently to see how things pan out. We're doing all right with at least one of those things. ;)

We need to keep Walker . Walker is the key to Tilmon, Smith and several other recruits to not keep him would be idiotic in my mind. The Assistant that is more important than him better be the John Wooden of Assistant coaches

I am surprised no one has mentioned in this thread that Underwood is looking to bring in La Lumiere Head Coach Shane Heirman. Could possibly be used in a support staff role. That’s according to ESPN’s Ryan Evan.

I can't find the post but I think MattColdagelli nailed this one days ago:thumb:

The only issue with bringing in Heirman in a support role is the NCAA rule that we couldn't sign some of the kids from LaLu for a couple of years. If he was an assistant coach, we could sign his former players. This is basically the Mario Chalmers rule where you can't hire a kid's dad or handler to be a "video coordinator" and pay him a bunch to get the kid.
