Illini Coaching Staff

The only issue with bringing in Heirman in a support role is the NCAA rule that we couldn't sign some of the kids from LaLu for a couple of years. If he was an assistant coach, we could sign his former players. This is basically the Mario Chalmers rule where you can't hire a kid's dad or handler to be a "video coordinator" and pay him a bunch to get the kid.

Well he did same thing with Danny Henderson so it makes sense.

I have to completely disagree with this. As a former athlete that was recruited, I made my decision based off a relationship with an assistant. Not my relationship with the HC. That is the case a lot of the time. You speak to the assistants much more than the head coach. Those relationships are built for years, not just a few months. If Walker leaves, I would completely understand if he decided to open up his recruitment. Sure, he likes the Illini, likes the campus, likes the environment but these are young men giving a 4 year commitment to a school and to a head coach. He doesn't have a lot of time to build a relationship with the head coach, if Walker leaves would he feel confident enough in a coach after say a month to give him a 4 year pledge? I know I certainly would not, and if Walker recruited me and and he left, I feel like I would have to at least entertain other options.

I can 100% agree with this, when it came down to the two schools I was deciding between to play college basketball at, I was closest with the head assistant at both schools. They were the lead recruiters on me. It's who I communicated the most with. It's common, those who follow college basketball recruiting know this.

MOST players don't form that bond with the head coach until they have played for him for at least a year. It doesn't mean you don't listen to him or respect him.

Although I would be greatly upset, I can't fault Tilmon for leaving if Walker leaves. But I would guess he would announce that he is opening up his recruitment again. I don't think he would just flip to another school immediately.

JW said that he's recommending Walker to Underwood, but that Underwood is "free to do what he wants." Hmmmm

How would that affect Tilmon since he played for him last year? Hmmm...

Bumped! I think it was more tongue in cheek, or maybe thats what Matt wants us to think... :gossip:

That wasn't really any kind of scoop or anything, it had actually been kicked around a bit while Groce was still here.

I am surprised no one has mentioned in this thread that Underwood is looking to bring in La Lumiere Head Coach Shane Heirman. Could possibly be used in a support staff role. That’s according to ESPN’s Ryan Evan.

I heard that same rumor from a source that I deem reliable. Hoping it's true.

He'd have to be brought on board as an assistant coach since we signed one of his former players (Tilmon). Can't be "support staff".

Going way out on a limb here, but one guy I don't think will be added is Shaquille O'Neal:

"Fans of the Flat Earth Theory have found an enormous new ally in the form of legendary basketball star and media personality Shaquille O'Neal. Responding to last month's furor surrounding NBA player Kyrie Irving expressing his belief in the Flat Earth Theory, Shaq gave the controversial conspiracy theory a ringing endorsement.

"It's true. The Earth is flat," he declared during a recent edition of his podcast.

His reasoning for this conclusion was that "I drive from Florida to California all the time, and it's flat to me. I do not go up and down at a 360-degree angle."

Shaq went on to ask, rhetorically, "you mean to tell me that China is under us? China is under us? It's not. The world is flat."

When confronted with the fact that photos have been taken of the round Earth from space, his response was one that would make any conspiracy theorist proud: "satellite imagery could be drawn and made up."

Personally, I'm not opposed to an assistant coach who embraces non-Euclidean geometries. I would just want to make sure his views are not merely the result of huffing too much Gold Bond.

THis is spot on. Most people do not understand this but it is true. I remember asking 2 players at a summer all star game after their coach left if they were staying. They said "the assts recruited us, we only got a phone call from the coach, as long as Brad Stevens stays we're good"

I think Walk is the key there. Will be interesting to see how it plays out . Thanks for the post.

I think this is the best sign we've got so far that Walker will stay. Whitman knows that Walker is a fan favorite and to publicly state that Whitman recommended that he stays puts Underwood in a bad position from the get go. If he lets Walker go, there's only one guy that decision falls on.

If Walker chooses to leave on his own, then all that is moot, but I have to think he wants to stay. Champaign is his home and I have no doubt that he's put in a lot of work to get the program ready for a run with the recruiting class and would want to be a part of it moving forward. Sometimes it doesn't always work out that way though, so we'll have to wait and see.

He also posted a picture of himself in a Brian Cook jersey.

Wasn't there a dude in a black shirt behind him too??? FYI I also heard that State Farm is pulling out of their sponsorship deal, and now going to be called the Xanax Center. FWIW....

I propose we let Walker head coach next year and redshirt Underwood a year. That will get him more qualified to decide which preps to recruit to redshirt.

Winning doesn't always ensure recruiting. Weber won 63 games, 2 conference titles and a Championship game appearance and couldn't capitalize in recruiting.

Weber did recruit well IMO. He just recruited the wrong players for his system. Which Weber admitted to doing later.

But if you're Duke, it's cool to hire their parents or hook up the parents with jobs with boosters.

Yeah back in the day when Einstein and I used to get rip roaring drunk we used to joke about how unnecessary the z coordinate was in the space-time continuum.
