Illini Coaching Staff

I'm assuming JWalker is a lock as an assistant coach. Whitman wouldn't have coaching today's game if he thought he was off to Missouri under Martin.

Unfortunately only the actual NCAA tournament games are today. We play tomorrow :)

Has he ever coached anywhere?

Of course not, why would you suggest such a qualification?

This is an issue all programs have to some extent or another, ex-players who think the school owes them something and aren't shy about sharing it. When you combine it with the preexisting cultural divide that Illinois always has to navigate, it's tough.

Winning makes this stuff pretty much go away.

I hope we get a data point on how bad of an idea this is and OSU hired Gottlieb.

If we want to go all in on the recruiting side for another assistant, why not Mac Irvin or his brother?
Well, Mac is dead. Don't know about his brother. :)
Now if you mean Mike or Nick -- that might be good although I doubt Mike would give up his nightclubs and his Fire money for an asst job, ditto with Nick. (Byron is a sports agent so probably not interested, Lance is too young and Cindy is too involved with CPS girls basketball operations.)

Dennis Gates just followed Whitman according to a post on Twitter.

That would be a hell of a get. He could get on just about any staff he wanted. He's also rumored for the Cal head job.

That would be HUGE! Like Garrick McGee huge.

Ha. I really only knew his older brother, and that was like 20 years ago (they went to the local Catholic high school and I did not), but I'll accept the title! :thumb:

One thing I can tell you about the whole Heirman family is that they are rabid Notre Dame fans. Montana Heirman is the brother, named after Joe.

Yep.. Enrico, Shane's Dad, was a big golden domer.

Interesting that there have been so many reports that Jamall is staying, but he hasn't met with BU and doesn't seem to know himself. Seems like the sooner that's worked out, the better.

WRT other staff hires. I know JW will make the funds available for a quality staff. The fact that we didn't completely break the bank hiring BU means there's likely more available for asst coaches. Here's hoping Gates comes aboard.

AGREE 100%. Hopefully they've traded texts or voicemails. In fluid situations - gotta err on the side of over communicating.

This would be an amazing hire if it's possible.

It is weird that Walker and Underwood haven't met yet. Maybe Underwood is giving Walker space to focus on the NIT?

I'd like to think that is the case.

Is there any connection at all with Walker and Underwood? Any bigger name coaches they share connection with?

Sounds like Illini expect to keep Walker but hearing Mizzou, SLU, DePaul all making/have made offer.

The DePaul offer is a game changer.

In the interview with Walker that's on the front page he says he has crossed paths with Underwood many times. And he says they did meet shortly after Underwoods arrival.

It sounds to me like he would really like to stay at Illinois but its far from a done deal.

If he wants to stay then it has to happen. Desperately need another post player on this team, particularly with Tilmon's ability.

I have to say I am a little nervous that Walker hasn't been locked in yet. I don't think he is definitely gone, but there really might be a problem if BU doesn't say Walker is staying during his press conference tomorrow.
