I have to say I am a little nervous that Walker hasn't been locked in yet. I don't think he is definitely gone, but there really might be a problem if BU doesn't say Walker is staying during his press conference tomorrow.

Let's be honest, it's all about landing on the right number for Walker's raise. He's got options and some leverage. Underwood also has to put together a full staff, so there is an overall budget to firm up as well. Whatever you pay Walker has to slot into that budget, not to mention sync with salaries other assistants. So, it's a process.

Walker's got a ton of leverage. It's been publicly stated many times that Tilmon goes where Walker goes.

Underwood has a pool of money available for his staff. He has to decide whether paying up for Walker is worth the financial hit his pool may take.

I'm sure they both want to figure this out so Walker stays, but In the end, its business.

Dennis Gates following @illiniAD. I see no connection to Underwood. Why would he be interested?

WRT other staff hires. I know JW will make the funds available for a quality staff. The fact that we didn't completely break the bank hiring BU means there's likely more available for asst coaches.

Presumably, if the offer was good enough, Snacks would return. Do we want him back?

Per my sources, Jamall Walker is not a done deal yet for Illinois, but things are looking good. #illini

Keep an eye on Florida State assistant & Chicago native Dennis Gates as a potential assistant coach hire for Brad Underwood's #Illini staff.

Walker saying that he hasn't sat down with Underwood means that they haven't, well, sat down together to talk business. It's not like Walker has a lot of spare time on his hands, and he really doesn't need the distraction. Underwood knows that, and Walker knows that.

Don't overanalyze this. Sometimes a banana is just a banana. Underwood will be at Monday's game, but only as a very interested spectator. He's not going to interfere or distract the players for their task at hand, baking the potatoes.

For the time being, let's take Walker at his word that Illinois is his home. If that changes, well, that happens.

Whitney Young graduate, led WY to state title along with Quentin Richardson and Cordell Henry. I can tell you that Gates has been very active in AAU and is very well liked by the powerful HS and AAU programs in the state.

I would assume the scoop on Gates is just simply because he followed Whitman on twitter. But I agree, the question is why? Hes been at FSU for 6 years and they seem to have a pretty good thing going on down there. The only connection I see is he coached at NIU for a bit, was even promoted to associate head coach there. Also, his younger brother coaches at Northwestern.

Edit: Ah, Obelix knew the only piece I didn't see. He's from Illinois.

He's a Chicago guy and was in Peoria this weekend to see his old school win the 4A title. And as Obelix said, very connected and respected in Chicago AAU circles.
The entire starting lineup of his Whitney Young team received d-1 offers. A very Simeon-ish accomplishment.

Guess that would be Simeon-esque accomplishment.

Gates attended Whitney Young when they won state with Quentin Richardson. He played at California and if memory serves me correctly graduated in 3 years. He's very intelligent and very well connected as a recruiter. As you can tell from my previous posts this would be my number 1 guy to grab as an assistant coach. This would be your home run hire as an assistant.

Tremendous recruiter. His name has popped up from time to time when we have had openings. Could be in line for Head spot at Cal

This is BWood simply respecting the job that Walker is focusing on right now. It's makes perfect sense to me that he would step back and allow JWalk to handle the team without more distractions.

Building a staff of guys with no connection or relationship with Underwood concerns me. Beckman-esque. Someone tell me why it's ok.

To be fair only one of his OSU assistants was with him at SFA. So you could be looking at a staff of:

Walker
Gates
Boyton Jr.

That would be quite the staff. Most have said Underwood is a tactician so why wouldn't he want ace recruiters to balance that out. Brings his most trusted assistant and gets a downstate recruiter and a Chicago recruiter. Also, Gates and Walker are more than just recruiters even if that is their strength. Seems like a staff that can really make some waves.
