Illini Coaching Staff

I'm not as concerned about the academic scandal because in my opinion, that falls on the head coach and their direction of the program. Sounds like he's a great assistant, but wasn't ready to be a head coach.

ESPN named him the top college assistant in 2012 under 40 years old.

Don't know anything about Antigua and I kinda worry that he used to recruit for Kentucky, but this tells me that we are finally bringing a gun to a gun fight

In my extremely limited knowledge, big time recruiting battles are often won in the gray areas. In my basically meaningless opinion, if we want to compete with the big boys, we can't be afraid to work in the gray areas of the rules. And if we are going to do that, I want to get a guy who did that at Kentucky with great success.

On the other hand, I'm pretty sure even I could be a recruiter at Kentucky and run into a few 5 stars that I "recruited."

the last assistant spot will either be Chin Coleman or Roger Powell.

I've seen that as well. Understand the attraction to both, but I'd love to see Roger back. Obviously an Illini guy, but I wonder what his reputation is in coaching circles? Recruiter? Developer? X&O guy?

This would definitely be a home run and make all the hand wringing about Evans even sillier than it was.

One the best recruiters in the game, deeply connected in the AAU circuit and even old friends with WWW

You say that, but before Cal, Antigua and co. got to UK, it didn't have that aura. As good a program as UK was, they were basically building from scratch there after Gillispie left that place in a heap.

Powell would surely be able to put a recruit's mother at ease regarding taking care of her son. Great individual, great person.

Fair point. That was mostly a tongue in cheek statement anyway. Probably a good time to point out since I'm new to the board, but if I say something, it almost always has at least a hint of sarcasm.

Yup and even knows the Black shirt guy. That's Antigua in the blue shirt and WWW in the brown jacket and white shoes.

I think he will be our national recruiter and help us close on in-state guys. Adding a Roger Powell would be a great group of coaches. Not concerned about academics, Illinois has a outstanding academic and NCAA compliance staff. We have had to, since we don't get the blue blood treatment.

Here is a good overview of Antigua's tenure at USF:

As a grad school alum of USF and a constant pusher of the "you need assistants who were head coaches in the past", I'd be very happy with this pick up. As someone who likes a spotless program (I know that is unrealistic), I'd be a tad worried.

Still, this would be a big time hire and if you could somehow pull Roger out of Vandy I would be on cloud freaking nine.

Exactly. But he would only be an assistant coach here. If Underwood had academic scandals previously, that would be concerning. Antigua wouldn't be running this program.

Of course, I understand that. My point was what occurred under his watch as head coach that forced him to resign? I'm sure this has all been vetted by JWhit and BWood, so I'm not too concerned about it.

I think we all agree this would be a tremendous hire for an assistant coach position. I'm all for it!

Who runs the UIHoopsRecruits account?

An Illini fan

I would think Underwood would want to bring in one of his own guys he has worked with previously.

He's bringing in much of his support staff. Obviously wanted to bring along Evans as well but OSU simply overpaid to keep him there. And obviously they hired Boynton as the head coach, too.
