Illini Coaching Staff

As much as Roger loves Illinois, I can't imagine him going from Associate Head Coach at a Power 5 school to basically the third assistant.

I trust your opinion as much as anyone's on here, but I can see Roger moving back to the Illini. In the majority of cases an AHC would not move to a 3rd assistant position, but this is different because:

1. We don't know for sure yet that he'd be third
2. His pay will likely go up either way
3. AHC for a rising mid-major may not be as attractive as a 3rd position on a team that could reasonably be E8 or F4 in a few years
4. As Illwinsagain mentioned, he may be attracted to learning a system that he thinks will be more successful in the long run.
5. It's homecoming!

You're right. Mid-major is not an accurate term. But it's not the same opportunity or tradition as Illinois.

I am sure that I speak for a lot of "old" alums here but during the 5 decades since I graduated my university always played "small ball". We know our place in the scheme of things and we should never aspire to any thing better. Accept our mediocrity and get out of the way of the big boys.

13 months ago we got a new athletic director and in the first 2 hours of his first day, he went thermonuclear and he has never looked back. We don't know how all this is going to play out but this is going to be a wild ride. I really think we are going to be very happy. But this I am sure of:

We are spending money like Texas

There are a whole bunch of ADs in other conferences and every AD in this conference that are totally perplexed and bewildered by what they see happening here.

And I love it.

This 100%. JW realizes you've gotta spend money to make money. He gets it.

Roger Powell also played for the Rockford Lightning in the now defunct CBA

Powell then decided to play in the Continental Basketball Association (CBA). The Rockford Lightning drafted Powell in the fourth round (30th overall selection) of the CBA draft in 2005. He enjoyed unparalleled success with the Lightning. The CBA named Powell the Rookie of the Year for the 2005-06 season, voted on by the eight CBA head coaches.

Not sure if anyone has discussed this, but Underwood asked Whitman to raise the assistant salary pool to $1mil and Whitman did so.

per Ryan Evans

That would create headroom for Dennis Gates...

I don't think proper credit has been given to the Whitmans Sampler name + avatar motif. I enjoy it.
Glad to hear :thumb:

I got the idea after watching Dana Carvey's impression of Scarface, which I highly recommend. Felt like I did 100 crunches from all the laughing.

And it's official. Hooray.

Feels good to see the BBN replies on Twitter about how much they wanted him back in Lexington.

Evan Daniels

Former USF head coach & Kentucky assistant Orlando Antigua will join Brad Underwood's staff at Illinois as an assistant coach, per a source.

A monster. I don't know if you can make a "statement" assistant coach hire, but this is as close as you can get to it.

A real college basketball program. We are running one. Pinch me.

Great news assuming it officially happens, now we are playing ball.

Seems as if landing things we didn't know we could get at Illinois has been a reoccurring phase at Illinois since Whitman took over ;)

This is a nice get

recruiting in illinois and mizzou areas should get interesting. WOW. Great hire from what I'm reading. Illinois is ready to play recruiting with the big boys
