Illini Coaching Staff

I don't know if it got S&C banned, but he became a one trick pony about Walker. He would never admit Walker at least helped get the commits, and wouldn't answer anyone who talked about future downstate recruits.

I think this misstates S&C's position. I think the point is that the commits were the reason he got a spot on the staff, which was a bad idea even assuming they had a competent degree of certainty that he assured they'd enroll, which obviously they did not have.

I think the problem was that there is absolutely no proof that Smith and Tilmon were the (only) reason Walker was re-hired, yet S&C's entire tirade was based on this assumption, and he would not let it go. If that is the only reason Walker was hired, then he probably had a point.

I think that's extremely reductive to assume that, though. By all accounts he's a good coach, has connections with the current players and can serve as a good bridge, and of course he is well-connected and well-liked on the recruiting trail and did a good job getting recruits to sign (and some to nearly sign) up for a team that was really a dumpster fire on the court for several years. There is no reason to think he was re-hired only to recruit Tilmon and Smith.

Is there any situation where Walker would have been retained if Tilmon had bailed before Underwood was hired? Doubt it.

I am not as certain as you, I suppose. Like I said, I think he has value in that:
  • He seems to have a good coaching reputation
  • He is well-liked by the current team and could serve as a good bridge between administrations
  • He seems to be a reasonably strong recruiter, considering the dumpster fire he was trying to convince people to join.
I think you really have to assume that both Underwood and Whitman are short-sighted and foolish to have hired Walker only for Tilmon and Smith. So far, we have no other indication that they are either of those things, so I have no reason to believe that was the only reason Walker was retained.

Antigua has generated more buzz about a greater number of recruits in a week than Parham did in 5 years.

So, Antigua coached the big men at Kentucky -- is that right? And didn't Walker coach the big men at Illinois? Any ideas how that gets resolved? Presumably one of them moves to wings or PG, assuming those are even separate in Underwood's staff...

Walker coached PG and combo guards.

Dustin "Big Canada" Ford coached the bigs.

Walker will coach the guards is what Coach said

I am completely out of the loop on this, and if this has been written up in the vast annals of this thread before, I apologize, but could someone give me a quick rundown of "Chin," and why we should look at him?

Thanks!

Is he considered a 'rising star'? That resume doesn't say, "Hire me!" This would satisfy only the "We need a Chicago guy!!" folks, of which I am not one. I think we can do much better. Chuck Martin has that former HC thing going on that lots of folks seem to like having on the bench. His time at Memphis and IU look pretty good. I'd be happy with Martin in our 3rd spot. Who else are we rumored to be looking at?

Martin?

As someone who doesn't have premium access anywhere currently, I would think Martin is who we are waiting on. He is up for a job and we must be waiting on him to find out if he gets the job.

I would think that would make a great recruiting staff. In the long run that would be great. It may not be great right away (Next Year) with some commits leaving and a late start on replacements.

Otherwise, I am not sure what the delay is. Someone up for another job. Or someone that promised to stay at a school through the signing period until they announce they are going to another school.

I'd rather have Martin but Coleman would be fine as a 3rd guy.

We should know in next couple days tops.
