The conventional answer of is it better to keep Tilmon vs lose Tilmon is definitely yes. But a raw, freshman center in a new, spread uptempo offensive system.... Maybe it's not a huge loss if he does leave?

No, losing Tilmon & replacing with no one is huge. Even if he isn't a bang in his first year, the only way to get to the second year is after the first. Tilmon will help next year, he will help even more the following year. There is no scenario where losing Tilmon is a good thing.

You're most likely correct. But there's a chance he doesn't fit well. Freshman bigs are hard to count on, even very talented ones. We're not talking about some surefire NBA guy. He's a very good prospect but he's not stepping in and dominating. Look at post guys ranked around the top 30 for previous years. Hardly 1 and done level stats.

And obviously losing Tilmon would not be a good thing.

I really hope our assistants wind up being:
Walker
Heirman (LaLu coach)
Gates (FSU)

I think that Heirman will bring Bowen with him as a part of him being an assistant on staff. Then we will add Mark Smith and Carroll from OSU. That is a team that is extremely talented, and a staff that will be able to reload with recruits every year.

No chance he does a complete new set of assistants. Also no chance Bowen comes to UI.

Not sure why everyone is adamant Evans will be on the staff. Just because he is listed as the OSU recruiting coordinator? He has been on Underwood's staff for all of 1 yr. Last time they were together they were both assistants under Frank Martin. Maybe they got along better as colleagues than as boss-subordinate. Who knows. The only thing known is Underwood has had Boyton his entire HC career and that he has changed the other assistants to suit the job.

I think it's essentially guaranteed that at least one of Evans and Boynton come with Underwood. Most likely scenario is that both come, Walker stays, and the little bit of Dennis Gates smoke ends up meaning nothing.

The twitter follows are interesting, though, so a scenario where Gates comes aboard and either Walker leaves or one of the OKST guys is sent packing could make sense. I'd like to see Gates, Walker, and Boynton/Evans, but I understand loyalty to your staff and expect Underwood to take care of his guys.

Agreed. He's bringing at least 1 of his OSU assistants with him.

That OSU staff took a bunch of players accustomed to Travis Ford Garbageball and turned them into the #1 offense in the country inside of a year.

Underwood isn't the only guy that proved himself on that staff.

We want teachers that really intuitively understand how the pieces fit together in this system. It's not brain surgery, and smart, good coaches from anywhere can pick it up eventually, but we want this install to be great NOW.

Expect #illini AD Josh Whitman to give Brad Underwood a large staff salary pool, just like he did with Lovie Smith

I was just going to post wondering about exactly this.

Just because Whit didn't give Groce a lot of money for assistants (Groce didn't want to make changes and his teams weren't winning) doesn't mean Whit won't do so for Underwood. Why pay top quartile for a Big10 coach and then not pony up for assistants? I'm intrigued they could bring in a 3rd assistant that may not be on the radar. And other than to keep current recruits happy they don't need to be in a huge hurry. The tourney is still going on.

No idea how he wants to play this, but if he wants gates, getting him with 330k and associate HC title might be possible.

Then 260k for each of the other two assistant coaches, giving them each a nice bump.

Obviously there could be sensitivity about relative salaries

Underwood reportedly had 700k budget for assistants at OK St. http://m.tulsaworld.com/sportsextra...cle_a615c136-3430-50f8-b453-862fde31006d.html

That works out to average of 233k per assistant at OSU.

With 850k budget, could afford to pay each assistant 283k on average.

As of 2014 at least, Walker Ford and Parham's salaries were 184k each.

Gates makes 236k at FSU.

For a top assistant, 236K sounds way low to me.
I'd be quite happy with 236, but why not grab a great assistant when he only makes like 8% of your new coach. Sounds like Gates is worth more than 8% to me. That's less than sales tax on 3M for goodness sake! ;)

Coach Cal makes $8M/yr and his top asst is at 700k. Also HC's at lower level schools don't make much more. Little outdated but https://www.boydsbets.com/highest-paid-coaches-college-basketball/

From an August article: Michigan State's combined payout of $820,000 for its men's basketball staff is likely the highest in the Big Ten. By comparison, Ohio State's staff combined to earn just over $700,000 last season, while Michigan's staff will tally roughly $600,000 next year. At basketball-mad Indiana, each member of Tom Crean's staff earned a base salary of $234,000 in 2015-16, combining for just over $700,000. At Wisconsin, Greg Gard, the heir apparent to Bo Ryan, was earning a little over $235,000 when he was promoted to head coach.

Couldnt get link to work on phone.

And Kansas data from 2013-14 for comparison

Howard will be paid $275,000 during the 2013-14 school year. He’ll also have use of a car and be provided a country club membership in town. Kurtis Townsend and Norm Roberts make $300,000 a year with a car and country club membership.

Assume that's gone up over the last three years, but we'd probably still be in ballpark of very top programs in country with exception of Kentucky

MSU Assistant salaries for comparison, from Sept 2016 arrive

So 300 for Assoc HC and 275k each for two assistants would be top of confeeence.

Thanks. Puts the $850,000 into perspective.
