It will not be exciting at all to "see if" it makes a difference. If this is the route we go - one that you correctly note has been a standing demand from certain people within the Chicago HS and AAU scene for awhile - then it had better make a difference, and an immediate one at that.

I'll be standing over here with S&C awaiting the first complaint that we didn't hire Chin fast enough, and thus don't get "full credit." I'll put the O/U at 3 weeks after he's announced.

I believe he was which is conveniently ignored in the Jamall shouldn't be retained theme some posters are pushing. Sure his recruiting misses in the St. Louis have lowered his perceived value but he has added some valuable recruits.

You must have missed quite a bit of the assistant coaching thread then. The implication is right there, which actually has been repeated by some Illini writers/reporters quite explicitly, that one of the reasons that the 3rd assistant has not been officially announced yet (or even some support staff) is so that he can recruit for Illinois circumventing the dead period. The reaction has been very positive, proclaiming it as a genius move.

Can you please elaborate/speculate on said 3rd assistant? So hard to keep everything straight in each thread with everything happening these last few weeks

Not much to elaborate, it has been stated that Illinois knows already who the 3rd assistant will be but has not been announced yet, so formally he can't be considered an employee of the school.

I thought that was just a crazy idea cooked up on a message board. Surely the coaching staff is smarter than that.

Some writers/analysts covering the Illini, as well as twitter posts by many, have speculated for the last few weeks that it is down to 2 candidates: Chuck Martin and Chin Coleman. The Illinois HC likely knows already, but no formal announcement has been made.

I think you caught up already :)

It should also be noted that Jamall's only "miss" is really Tilmon. Pickett is less a miss than a mutually agreed departure. Also a good chance both are here if Groce doesn't get canned (although not a sure thing in Tilmon's case). And given the "unique" nature of Tilmon's recruitment, it's incredibly harsh to blame those shenanigans on Jamall. From all accounts he played this one really well and Tilmon's mom absolutely loved him. Other factors won out.

I suppose you are throwing Goodwin in there too, but I suspect we simply weren't willing to offer what SLU was.

Jamall is a good recruiter. Full stop. He knows the STL area extremely well and will keep us in play for all the top guys in that area. Ultimately it's up to BU to close on recruits, and winning games will be a big part of that.

I think we all need a little bit of perspective on this situation. Even if Coleman is hired, we'll have the following staff:

- Rising HC from a P5 school with an incredibly successful track record
- Nationally known recruiter who has signed some of the best classes in NCAA history
- Quality STL recruiter who was highly sought after
- Third assistant with very strong Chicago ties and relationships with upcoming recruits

If someone would have told me that a month ago I would be ecstatic.

I think it is vastly more likely that Chuck Martin, longtime P5 assistant and former D1 head coach, is searching for better offers while Chin Coleman, AAU maven who was recently fired by Bradley and whose total extent of major conference experience consists of one year as a DOBO at Nebraska, is waiting around as a backup plan.

that we are/were in a bidding war with South Carolina over Chuck Martin. Who knows? Several posts earlier in the week were indicating that Martin hadn't been announced so he could recruit during the "dead period". Appears.....very few actually know what is going on at this time.

Same folks who were indicating Chuck Martin earlier in week seem to have flipped and are now saying Coleman. Not sure if anybody knows anything. Been incredibly quiet from the Illinois side.....maybe Whitman is rubbing off on everyone.:)

Seems like a situation where someone is obeying the letter of the law but not the spirit. I guess this is that "gray" area that was discussed previously here or on another thread. I would think, though, that no recruiting during the dead period would mean no recruiting whether you represent a school or not. Which brings up my next question: How can one recruit for a school if you are not the representative of that school?

I have it from an iron-clad source that we have offered both coaches the opportunity to prove themselves; whomever brings in a committed recruit first to the Illini without actually, officially being hired by the Illini, gets the role of 3rd assistant, and the other may or may not be brought on in a "support staff" position.

Take it for what its worth, but my source has never lead my astray!
