I'm sure the team as a whole will get a come-to-Jesus talk as a result of this.

For those who may not be familiar with this Texas (how appropriate) expression, here's the urban dictionary definition.

I expect, from knowing what we know of Lovie, it will be painfully quiet in that room when the team gets together. My word would be, "There are three empty seats in this room. Don't make it four."

Joe Spencer

Every incoming freshman player football and otherwise should read today's letter written by Joe Spencer on the Illini football website. It is about being a man or women for others! If we all raised Joe Spencer's in this world, life would be easy for U of I coaches and particularly Coach Smith. Life is challenging but each student athlete should ask themselves, "what would Joe Spencer do in this situation. Thanks for being a leader to all the players Joe!

That should be read by every incoming freshman, athlete or not. You are extremely blessed to be able to attend one of the premier universities of the world, not just the state or the country. People come from all around the world to attend U of I. That it's your home state university should make it all the more special.

You have no idea--as all we alumni know--how fast those four years will fly. Time looks so abundant with four years ahead of you, yet so afterwards, so little. Yet skills learned, knowledge earned and memories made will last a lifetime. I-L-L-

So far only Wisconsin and Iowa are at unfortunate game times, the rest look like an improvement over last year! As for getting to a bowl game, I think if we find a way to start the season off 2-2 then we have a solid chance. Beat Ball State, then one of the next three. I think think Rutgers, Purdue, and Indiana are as close to must wins as you get. Then all you have to do is steal one from Northwestern, Iowa, or Minnesota and they're bowl bound.

If we somehow someway start this season off 3-1 I will be chugging orange koolaid.

I was looking for something else and came across this, and if I had to look at it, so do you.

When I lived in Illinois and attended games, I liked the 11 am starts. We'd get into town on Friday and hit a couple of campustown bars. Then Saturday morning, we'd be at the tailgate lot at 7 am. Lunch was ready right after halftime then we had the rest of the second half and the rest of the afternoon to play bocce ball, cornhole or whatever else we had going on. Tear down at 6 pm then head out to downtown Champaign watering holes untll after midnight. Ah, good times indeed.

I still like the 11 am starts because I can still take care of a few things around the house after the game until it's time for dinner.

Whats the deal with Lawson? Sorry, I don't check the football board much.

Honestly its all over the place, the one thing that is certain is that he has to stay for summer to complete classes. Others suggest that he will never play for the illini. there may still be character issues still. Sooooo :noidea:

This reads to me like you never left the parking lot.
When you have to come in from way out of town, 11 AM games are the worst. If you are going to grill at all, it's hard to choke down a bratwurst at 9:30 in the morning. Plus to avoid having to leave home at 4 AM you have to spend more money to find a hotel for a 1-night reservation on a game day weekend. That's impossible in town. So you have to stay in Tuscola. Although we remain young at heart, we ain't so young anymore, so hitting the bars is not something my generation does anymore. We do come for the Marching Illini though. As long as you have an enjoyable time, it's all worth it.

Some of the crew that comes down doesn't leave the lot, you are correct. I would say of the approximately 15 or so that tailgate, probably half of us go to the game. Depends on how the game is going as to when we leave. Yeah, we're not getting any younger, either, so the "enthusiasm" with which we tackle Saturday night is getting lower and lower. :) The tailgate, though, is usually fun filled. I have really missed that the past 4 years due to living in the UK and now Houston. Hope to get back one day.

I get it if you're coming down the day of the game, it's an early start to the day. That part does suck, agreed.
