Was wondering how many redshirts we had. By my count, looks like "only" 7. Will be interesting to see how much that number changes going into this season.

Very interesting.

If you want to look at it through rose colored glasses, a four-star recruit can't crack our DT rotation.

Indications are that the Illini DT is in good shape. That said, I'm assuming this move has far more to do with the OL being pretty bad by Big Ten standards.

Its funny how we are moving a 4 star DT to Center, and Verdis Brown, a 4 star Center to DT...

Really gonna be interesting since they can still play up to 4 games and redshirt.

Nope, the rule just changed. And IIRC the new rule applies for 2018.

Will be very, very handy for Lovie.

+1

This could not have come at a better time for a program with 3 true freshmen QBs competing for a starting job that could still be in flux 4 games into the season.

Each QB plays 4 games, all take the redshirt.

This is honestly exactly what I would do. My method would be to do it on a rotation. Have your advanced scouting people do some real legwork filmwise. Have the OC create like a 10-15 play package based on the film. Give each freshman quarterback 3 weeks to practice only that package and prepare for the team they will face.

Quick! Somebody send this to Lovie and Rod!

QB is so key. Decent play at QB and we’ll have ourselves an interesting season. I don’t think this can be overstated.

Sorry if my sarcasm meter is broken. But this would not be a good plan. You'd have one QB playing the weak part of the competition while another is going to come in cold and make his first ever start vs competition he isn't ready for, costing us any chance at a swing game. Ill take Bush vs Minnesota after he has a few games under belt vs a true freshman that has zero experience...

You'd better have an offensive line that can give any QB even a little protection. It has to be a little disconcerting to have a giant defensive lineman bearing down on you like a bull elephant with his tail on fire. I wonder how last year's QBs would have performed with a mature B1G line in front him.

Kent State preview (Link)

Major points:
  • Kent State has scored the fewest points of every D1 football program in the past four years
  • In response, they have a new head coach (youngest in NCAA) that focuses on snapping the ball in 15 seconds or less
  • Have a transfer QB from Auburn that seems very boom-or-bust
  • Offensive line play has been bad for the past couple years, plus they only have two returning starters
  • Their linebacking corp is strong
  • Their defensive line is a weakness, but they have a couple players coming back from suspension/injury
  • One of the best punters in the country

I think we attack them by running the ball principally. Long scoring drives. Defensively see if your four men can pressure. A timely blitz here and there.

Field position has been our weakness. So many drives starting at our 10.
