All respect to Isaiah Williams but is it realistic for him to actually play QB next year at 5'9.5? It kind of worries me because even guys like Denard Robinson, Robert Griffin 3, etc were over 6 feet

Robinson only measured 5'10.5" at the NFL combine.

you're right my bad. I thought I read somewhere that he was 6' but I guess not.. still if Isaiah could grow an inch or 2 I think it could help soldifiy himself as a QB for Illinois. he's a great player either way though

Robinson has always been listed as 6', which I guess is true when he is wearing shoes.

And Manziel was under 6 ft and Russell Wilsont too. And Pat White was 6 ft. I can't imagine playing at 5'10 is going to be a huge problem, especially in this offense.

Definitely, if height was ever a concern this offense is best suited for it

Yeah man Isaiah Williams gonna be breaking ankles out there. And he seems to have a pretty strong arm and great decision making from what I've seen. He will be spectacular to watch.

The QB situation for Lovie's 2nd season was an egregious mistake, the most disturbing thing that has happened in his tenure here, and this Fleck thing is even worse AND he was hired on a normal timeline so he had an extra class to recruit QB's.

Amazing.

New coaches should just go get 3-4 QB's in their first class no matter what. Make sure you're dealing with competition from handpicked guys who fit what you want to do ASAP. That dynamic raises the level of the whole roster, you can feel that happening in our camp, can't you?

It was an egregious mistake. But hiring McGee as OC was numero uno.

Antwan Randle El is also 5'10" and was a pretty good college QB.

A hire we were all rightly thrilled with at the time. And don't underestimate the degree to which McGee got a very college inexperienced staff, including Lovie, up to speed on what college football requires now, particularly in the recruiting area. Plus I'm not sure what Lincoln Riley or Urban Meyer could have gotten out of our offensive personnel last year. Hopeless QB play and true freshmen all across the offensive line virtually guarantees exactly what we saw.

And of course, the rumors at the time were that McGee was fired for off the field stuff.

Was McGee to blame for handing the keys to Chayce Crouch and generally neglecting the QB position? Looking at what has happened since, that seems plausible. Did he cause some of the mass transfers that left the offense in such a lowly personnel state last year? It's possible.

But the meatball sports radio blame-the-playcaller thing is something I would hope we could be a bit more sophisticated than. I don't know if you personally were saying it in those terms, but that's a pretty common refrain across Illinidom.

Rod Smith has better, deeper, more experienced personnel to work with. Let's start building from there.

True that. Hindsight is 20/20. Strongly beg to differ on McGee's recruiting prowess. Thought his floor was going to be VG. Boy, was I wrong. As far as helping our pro staff acclimate to college ball, who really knows? Yes, he inherited a dumpster fire (as did everyone else). Difference being, other units made strides (or baby steps).

Good stuff from BTN, though pretty generic and not a lot new for those who have been keeping up over the summer. Kinda funny they haven't "officially" named Bush the starter but might as well...

Interesting discussion about D prepping against our up tempo offence not meshing with the pro sets in much of the BT West....could be both good and bad, but I think I prefer them being prepped for the faster paced situations as you can always downshift and catch your breath easier than trying to speed up a bunch of young guys.

I was already impressed with Lovie and Hardy and now Rod! He is going to deliver. This could be a fun year.

Randle El deserved the Heisman. He was absolutely 100% the best athlete in cfb. You know as soon as the panel starts talking about "gotta be a winning team", that they've decided to NOT pick the best athlete. Infuriating.

I was concerned with the Rod Smith hire when it happened but that guy's personality just blows me away.
I think Lovie may have knocked one out of the park with the hire.
That guy just seems like a steal to me now.

At this point, there's obviously still reason to doubt, but Lovie + co. seem to be poised to pull us out of the B1G gutter (like to see a push for the West in 2020, if not then 2021). Illinois will never be an OSU/Michigan. They have a chance to be Iowa and even Wisconsin. This team, in the modern era, has never had consistent success. That should be the measuring stick of the Lovie years. If they can prop up a team that consistently wins at least 6 games, with top 25 seasons every few years, he will go down as our best HC in the past 50 years.
