I was concerned with the Rod Smith hire when it happened but that guy's personality just blows me away.
I think Lovie may have knocked one out of the park with the hire.
That guy just seems like a steal to me now.
I knew he was going to be good and I'm thrilled we got him. Being in Arizona I have lots of U of A fan friends who were really bummed when they lost him to us.

Situation this season is almost exactly the same, except AJ Bush made the grades whereas Dwayne Lawson didn't.

Leaving aside the fact that knowing with some reasonable certainty whether or not a Juco is going to make the grades is very much a part of a staff's responsibility, especially at that position, adding a Juco to a guy who just wasn't remotely a D1 talent, a guy stylistically incapable of running the offense, and a raw true freshman even by true freshman standards still leaves a very bad situation.

We now have a fit-for-purpose 5th year senior, a sophomore with playing experience in the system, and three handpicked true freshman. Much better.

And if our staff continues to properly prioritize and tend to the position as they did this offseason, that depth chart will continue to look more and more stable and robust. My money is on Isaiah Williams busting in like the Kool Aid Man and being the next Antwaan Randle-El as a four year starter, but you still need to have quality depth.

Which translates to an individual much better equipped to lead this team due to abilities both athletic and grey-matter-wise. The knock/word on Lawson at Tech was that he had a challenge in mastering the playbook.

A little late on the update but, on the Werner show they mentioned that this kid had a better offer list than Matt Robinson. He is a legit talent. He is just from Min where his brother just earned a scholarship as well. It sounds like they lucked out on this kid

But he is still a true freshman playing B!G Football. Gotta win that game

247 shows him having an offer from UIUC, FWIW.

Agreed on the talent, he had a 247 composite ranking of 1471, pretty high for a walkon.

Oh oh oh...! Just figured out what UIUC stands for. It's University of Illinois, Under Construction. OK, someone probably thought of it before, but it's new to me, and utterly appropriate to Illinois football, which is being built from the ground up.

Oh man! I would so love for you to be right. He'll be surrounded by a lot more weapons here than Antwaan Randle El ever had at Indiana. And the direction the defense is going, those '21 and '22 teams should have a really high ceiling. Oh please please please please be right!

So I made a bet with one of my Hawkeye friends today.. If our football team wins less than 5 games this year, I have to wear an Iowa shirt for the lone basketball matchup in January. But he wears an Illini shirt if we get to 5 wins. Who likes my odds? :illinois:

The Kool-aid already runneth over. :p

I get the Randle El comparison from a size and athleticism perspective, but Randle El played at a time when Big Ten defenses were accustomed to defending traditional pocket passers. He was a bit of a novelty in the same way that Kordell Stewart became a novelty in the NFL. But defenses now are playing against dual-threat QBs on a near weekly occasion. To really be effective, he's going to need quality skilled position guys to spread the field.

I would have made it 4 wins...

I think we'll get 5 wins. That said, need Bush and those units that have a big dropoff between the 1s and the 2s have to stay healthy.

Yeah, if the bet is something serious, like repping the other teams colors or an exchange of tender or goods, I'd have chosen 4 wins....

Yeah, 5 wins would be a huge, pleasant surprise to me. 4 wins would be a solid step forward.

Should have read the thread.

The Hawkeye friend may not have taken the bet at 4 games.
