Keep doing what you do bro...............I'm always more educated about all things Illini with your detailed posts......I wanted to look at what schools we have winning streaks against in basketball AND football, and as you would expect ... the list is not long. While we have a winning streak against 8 of our 13 conference foes in hoops (including impressive 5-game winning streaks vs. the likes of Michigan, Wisconsin and Iowa, as well as a long 8-game winning streak vs. Northwestern), we only have a winning streak against a few football programs:
W2 vs. Michigan State (mostly because we've barely played...)
W2 vs. Nebraska
W1 vs. Minnesota
W1 vs. Northwestern
W1 vs. Penn State
However, I wanted to look at how many "big two" sports contests we have won in a row vs. a certain school, and here are three of the four:
W5 vs. Minnesota (4 hoops games and last year in football, all in a row)
W5 vs. Northwestern (same)
W4 vs. Penn State (3 hoops games and last year in football, all in a row)
The fourth cracks me up and gives me immense joy, though. Since we beat Nebraska in basketball in February of 2020, we have not lost to them in a major sport! We have won four straight in basketball and two straight in football. Given my distaste for Scott Frost and their absolutely delusional fans, there are two wins I want more than any other this fall - breaking the losing streak vs. Iowa and winning AGAIN in Lincoln!!
Going for 10 in a row against Northwestern in basketball for the second time this century has numbed the pain of Lovie vs. FitzNature is healing
In a sane world, we would beat NW 8 or 9 times out of 10 in football (this has never happened btw, which is exhibit A as to how life isn't fair)Nature is healing
I knew we had beaten the Cats a lot back in the 1970's and 1980's so I decided to google. We have numerous periods where we beat them 8/10 and 9/10. Check out these years:In a sane world, we would beat NW 8 or 9 times out of 10 in football (this has never happened btw, which is exhibit A as to how life isn't fair)
We didn't lose to them in 1978. https://www.sports-reference.com/cfb/boxscores/1978-09-09-illinois.htmlI knew we had beaten the Cats a lot back in the 1970's and 1980's so I decided to google. We have numerous periods where we beat them 8/10 and 9/10. Check out these years:

There are numerous 10-year periods across those three windows where we pounded them to the tune of 8/10 or 9/10. I can recall NW having the longest losing streak in the nation while I was in school.

Ya that was a pointless game. The horror. Am still trying to recover.

I have the extinction of attending our only win that year at Syracuse. My last roommate took a job in Utica with GE so I drove up for the game. Little did I know it would be our only win. Jack Daniels tasted good that day!We didn't lose to them in 1978. https://www.sports-reference.com/cfb/boxscores/1978-09-09-illinois.html

My first game as a college student. I still remember my roommate and I turning to each other in the stands after the game and saying "Oh my God, we bought season tickets"!We didn't lose to them in 1978. https://www.sports-reference.com/cfb/boxscores/1978-09-09-illinois.html
The only teams that have to talk about walk-ons are the ones that have zero depth. Take that as a good thing. Not much talk about any standout walk on s this year. Any insights on any new players that will get a scholarship.
I think they granted Pihlstrom tenure.I assume Reiman and Pihlstrom are both on scholarship permanently now, yeah?
Is Isaac Darkangelo still a walk-on?
Tomorrow begins the four-year drinking game of announcers mentioning how old Hugh Robertson is.I think they granted Pihlstrom tenure.
Think Werner mentioned darkangelo is a walk on. Seems like it will be a formality to be on scholarship. Guessing a timing thing but ??I assume Reiman and Pihlstrom are both on scholarship permanently now, yeah?
Is Isaac Darkangelo still a walk-on? Michael Marchese?
Win at IU and not falling for the banana in the tailpipe against Chattanooga gets the Illini well on the way toward a December Bowl.
Beverly Hills Cop 4 is apparently happening. just sayingWin at IU and not falling for the banana in the tailpipe against Chattanooga gets the Illini well on the way toward a December Bowl.
