I know we’ve beaten this to death, but the contrast between how Lovie handled the bowl game and practices and how Bret is handling it could not be more stark. Lovie treated it like a reward to be enjoyed. Bret treats it as a an opportunity to lay a stronger foundation.

One more comment on his press conferences, I’ve yet to hear him stumble on a question. He either is great at thinking on his feet or he’s already thought through every possible scenario so he knows the answer before the question gets asked. Maybe both.

I’m so glad to have him as the GM of our program.

As I recall, it wasn't uncommon for Lovie to cancel or shorten a practice. BB seems to treat every allowable minute of practice as gold.

I forgot about samari collier transferring out beginning of year. Art now retired. Qb room is thin.
the QB room has 3 open chairs . not sure how they get filled exactly . Swanson takes one. But we have one or two others open .
we really need to get someone to replace Art , in the very likely event TDV/ or new guy needs a in-game break during the year.

Art is a good kid. I think his situation at Rutgers doomed his career(well maybe not entirely, but that was a horrendous situation to be in for a freshman).

Bret knows how to plant seeds that turn into good, career positive relationships.

I think Lovie is a really good guy.

But Im just not sure what his whole motivation was for taking our HC gig. Spending extended periods of time in AZ, even in the midst of Covid, and alienating the IHSA coaches for 4 years , is so weird and almost impossible to explain. In a state like ours, you need to have a solid presence in state. Its so much easier to keep getting coaches friendly to the program, when they are 60-180 milers away, versus 1200 miles away

Add to that his revolving doors with assistants, and elevating his son to a position way above his ability is just mind boggling. His first year here added credibility to the program.

after that first year , it was pretty bad. but in hindsight, they did in fact recognize many prep players that were under rated

Lovie trusts his players to be great, Bret expects his players to be great. Both can work, but the fan base has been longing for a coach with Bielema's intensity.

I suppose both approaches can work, but Lovie's version didn't work, and by appearances it was because he didn't work.

Appearances aren't always accurate, but ultimately results are, and Lovie's results were a complete failure.

Lovie's approach works in the pros, where you're dealing with grown men who don't need the same level of motivation, coaching and development as college players. And you don't have to deal with recruiting, and you can hire your under-qualified son and try and hide his inadequacies by surrounding him with experienced coaches on bloated NFL staffs.

Unfortunately Lovie didn't adjust his approach when he took the Illinois gig. And then he stopped trying when things didn't work out like he envisioned.

It's been obvious for 10 years that changes have been needed to the bowl schedule but ESPN is only focused on expanding the schedule to max out the TV coverage. Make these changes:

#1 - Allow bowl participation to not count against the 4 game eligibility threshold.
#2 - Bowl win payouts for upperclassmen
#3 - Start bowl season closer to the end of regular season

Plenty of other ideas that would incentivize player participation but it would require too heavy of a lift to be viewed as realistic.
