Specifically during team you would need at least two coaches to watch both sides of the ball at the same time. Drill work you need someone that is working on technique and someone that is running the drill, it is damn near impossible to do both at the same time. If you are coaching a player and you are the only one then the drill grinds to a halt.

TLDR:
Every position needs at least two coaches. The detail involved in everything that is done is insane.

just want to reiterate how flippin' fortunate we are to have BB leading our program. he's an utter gem

great call, Josh!
Yes. He has become the one coach that makes me feel the best about Illinois Football since Mike White and John Mackovic. He may be, after it is all said and done, the best. What construction to Memorial Stadium is Bret referring too? Is it the new LED lights that were mentioned a few years ago or is it something else?

Can someone that played football explain how there can be so many coaches? There are 22 cowboys coaches for 45 players (maybe they coach the full ~53 with practice squad). For example, there is that much coaching needed for wide receivers that they need an assistant coach?
Duties are very specific and specialized. Every staff is different, but 2 outside linebackers coaches could be one is focused on the recruiting and film break down/scouting reports, while the other is more direct with techniques, game plan implementation, etc… no idea if that’s the case here. Just an example. Things are constantly getting more sophisticated and detailed.

Could just be both are good so BB decided on that as a way to keep them. I’d be interested if anyone has knowledge on the topic as it pertains to the illini.

He's talking about the Cowboys, not the Illini.

I was confused by the "co-OLB coaches" because I thought there was only 1 assistant coach spot left. I hadn't realized the NCAA eliminated the on-field coaches limit last summer. I'm curious how staffs will evolve from here as programs determine how to allocate limited resources (increasing assistant coaches, increasing recruiting staff, increasing NIL payouts, etc).

Way-too-early record predictions for every Big Ten football team in 2025

he has us at 10-2
I'm buying Illinois stock entering 2025. The program returns nearly its entire 2024 team -- a group that finished 10-3 after a bowl win over South Carolina. Its schedule is manageable, with Ohio State the only protected top-ranked opponent. The Fighting Illini have a clear path to a CFP berth.

1 will get the official “10th assistant spot” they will both coach the OLBs though. Like they did this year

Seems he used the cowboys as an example. Last I checked there are no threads on this board about the cowboys’ coaching staff. He even used the words “for example”.

To ‘boot’, if he was talking about the cowboys, my point was general, and still stands.

Sigh.

Dele harding left our staff to become one of 22 coaches on the cowboys with an active roster of 45 players.

His specific question was why it was necessary. Just go back and read.

The ability to sell out Memorial Stadium on a regular basis depends greatly on there being a healthy season ticket base. So a little offseason ticket tracking, if you will...

Tom Moreland, Chief Commercial Officer, UI Athletics recently made appearances on the Saturday Sports Talk radio show and Illini Inquirer podcast. He shared some interesting tidbits that shed light on the current number (and recent growth) of football season tickets.

According to Tom, in 2022, there were roughly 22,000 season ticket holders. As of the 2024 season, there were nearly 37,000. That's growth of almost 15,000 over the two years. (I recall there being "over 10,000" new season tickets sold going in 2023, so there must have been about 5,000 new tickets sold last year.)

Tom also mentioned that there have been almost 2,000 new season ticket deposits placed since the Citrus Bowl. This would be people that intend to buy new tickets for 2025 and have made a $50 nonrefundable deposit per seat they intended to buy. Once the reseat of Memorial Stadium is done, I’m sure season tickets will be available for sale until the summer when single game tickets go on sale. At this rate, it’s possible the season ticket base will break into the low 40,000s for the 2025 season, which would be a significant milestone.

Does anyone have any knowledge of how numbers like this look for other programs? Ideally, I'd like to see what programs like Oregon, Missouri, Iowa State, etc. might look like. If Illinois has 40,000 season ticket holders, that's about 67% of capacity. It would be interesting to see how a 67% capacity in season tickets looks compared to other programs.

quick little bit of googling
Wiscy has 40,000 season ticket holders. Iowa has 52,000, USC has 45,000

we need to get to 45,000 - 48,000 in the next two years

That would get us to a similar % of capacity as Iowa. Iowa's at about 74% of capacity (52,000 of 70,000). 75% of our capacity would be close to 46,000. You number seems to be a good target.
