Illini Golfers in the Pros

Well...Nick Hardy started great today. -6 thru 12 holes but...now has gone double bogey-bogey to fall to -3. Now on 15 he's hit his approach shot 30 yards over the green into some thick junk. Needs to stop the bleeding. Detry with a bad day...+4.

Detry had a 9 on #3, par 5...ouch.

Hardy finished 1 under, 4 under on the front and 3 over on the back.

Fascinating two rounds for Hardy. +5 over the final six holes yesterday, -11 on the other 30 holes, so sitting at -6 overall. At this point he should be in the Top 25 for the Korn Ferry Finals and just needs to finish as high as possible to improve priority for PGA Tour events next season.

As it currently stands, both are in line for cards: Nick is 12th and Thomas is T16 in the projected standings. Thomas needs a low number to make the cut, but it's looking like it won't matter either way. Nick will probably need to stay in the top 40 or so over the weekend, but he definitely helped himself out today.

Detry in third, one shot back after second round of the BMW on the DP tour. Will only be a 54 hole event, due to the Queen’s death.

Frustrating coverage. You’d hardly know Detry was playing. They’d rather show Rory walk down the fairway to his ball than show other players making shots.
Interesting too is that they ended their broadcast with Detry walking down the 18th fairway to his ball needing, admittedly, a one in a million shot at an albatross to tie for the lead. I was pissed.

PGA Priority Ranking for the upcoming season: PGA Priority Ranking

Illini on the list:
Category 27 (KFT Graduates): Nick Hardy, Thomas Detry
Category 35 (Beyond 150 on FedEx Rankings): D.A. Points
Category 36 (Past Champions): Steve Stricker

An interesting note I picked up on Hardy: he enters the season in the "minor medical" category due to his wrist injury. If he can pick up 0.5 FedEx cup points (in other words, make a cut) in his next four starts, then he will move up to Category 22, which should lock him into all events except for majors and invitationals. I'm not sure if that's for the whole season or a certain time frame, but either way he should have the opportunity to make a strong move this year.

PGA Tour Medical Exemptions

I'm curious how Detry will balance the DP World and PGA Tour, but he looks like he's planning on being busy - his last three weekends were Indiana/England/California! As well as he's playing, I can see him being in the conversation a few times this year.

Pieters is not on the list (I don't think the DP World Tour automatic cards start until 2024), but he can probably get into any event he wants as long as he keeps his Top 50 world ranking. I'd expect him to play some big-money events leading up to the Masters (i.e. Genesis, Arnold Palmer, Match Play).

D.A. will probably play a few events, but he hasn't been too competitive lately. But he has a history of pulling out random wins when he appears to be in a slump, so who knows... Hopefully he's healthy, he's fun to watch.

Strick appears to be enjoying life on the Champions Tour, though he'll probably play a couple Tour events like Deere.

Very informative. Thanks for posting.

Illini men start up at Olympia Fields tomorrow. This team should be really good. Preseason rank is 11 whatever that’s worth. This field is stacked, will be interesting to see how they do. Buchanan, Kuhl, Besard, Hunt and ADC are in the lineup. If they can get Jerry Ji right it would be a huge plus.

Either Ji or Lang need to return to form.

A couple of clutch closing birdies from Hardy has him at -3 with the projected cut at -2, so looking good for Nick. Detry is -5 and currently T12 after another solid day.

Great start so far for the Illini. Is Texas playing their top players?
I'm fairly certain they are unless there is an injury. Pearson and Hammer were both seniors. Vick is their returning stud. This is a very high level event so it is not like they would big time and send a B team or something.

Sorry, forgot the sarcasm marker. I was just shocked that they were +11 and in next to last place.
