I think we're conflating traditional cap space with luxury tax/apron flexibility. The Bird rights allowed them to sign Ayo without using available cap space.
Yes, and they've been well above the cap this entire time, and above the luxury tax. They were only $17 million below the first apron. Now they are above the first apron and below the 2nd apron. The tweet I linked shows that, and there are tons of articles explaining this. The main point is that they are hard capped at the 2nd apron now because of the LaMelo Ball trade. And they are only $9.6 million below the second apron once these deals go through.

But $9.6M allows them to sign up to 4 more players, correct?

Don't think I ever suggested it didn't.

I did, it was the main point I was trying to make (people thinking their roster is finalized, etc)

I am seeing conflicting information about them being $17M below the first apron when the season ended.

There is a Bleacher Report article that states the most recent trade sits them at $16.862M under the first apron.

That's where they were pre-trade. Bleacher Report is misreading the Spotrac info. Spotrac does not update the cap amounts until the trades are finalized. You can double check this by simply adding the cap hits of each player, as on the tweet I linked earlier.

If they didn't have Green then they'd have 24.6 mil available. That should be enough to sign a good player, no? Just for comparison, Ayo's making 19mil.

Pretty brutal that they had to take him alongside Ball.

Ah, weird... Bleacher Report, get it together, sheesh :)

Before doing anything, they had almost $17 million in space below the first apron.

Randle's cap hit was $33 million. Reid's $23 million. That's about $56 million going out.

Ball's cap hit is about $41 million. Ayo's about $19 million. Josh Green about $15 million (rounded down on ball and Ayo, so rounded up on Green). So that's about $75 million coming in.

So now they're about $3 million above the first apron, with about $9.6 million to go to the second apron (where they are hard-capped).

Yes, they have 4 spots to fill, but $9.6 million to do it (barring further trades) so essentially they have to find 4 guys at or below the veteran minimum. Not going to be impact guys. Unless they do it via trade. And via trade, their best bet is freeing up that Josh Green contract but you're going to have to sweeten that deal somehow.
they could just release him

They’re 11 milllion below second apron not 9.6

The reason it MIGHT make sense for CHA is that you have the assets / trade exception to go get THAT GUY when you need to. It’s the largest trade exception in history, which I don’t think expires until next offseason. Plus, they have tons of first round picks.

They just decided LaMelo wasn’t “that guy.”

They can also evaluate whether Kon is their #1 option.

…..

The downside is that you’ll undoubtedly be a worse team next year by a pretty significant margin. They were AWESOME the second half of the year. This fanbase has starved for relevancy, and now they’re being shoved back into mediocrity.

One could’ve easily seen it as “LaMelo, Kon, Miller, figure out your bigs (they just drafted Steinbach) …. continue to build it out.” They just didn’t see it that way.

I do think the biggest piece of this is LaMelo’s durability.

Then go get Jaylen Brown

I don't get this move by the Twolves. They lost to the Spurs b/c of their front court... Randle's poor shooting and Goebert's inability to shoot beyond 2 feet, so Wemby could just park in the lane. If anything, the emergence of Ayo and TSJ kept them in it. So they reward our guys by going out and getting another lead guard (and injury-prone) and let a big man (Naz) with a decent jumper go. And now they have little room/assets to acquire any half-way decent big.
Not hard to understand. They want to please Ant and Melo is the guy they can get without losing McDaniels. Not saying they will do better in the playoff.
