The reason it MIGHT make sense for CHA is that you have the assets / trade exception to go get THAT GUY when you need to. It’s the largest trade exception in history, which I don’t think expires until next offseason. Plus, they have tons of first round picks.
They just decided LaMelo wasn’t “that guy.”
They can also evaluate whether Kon is their #1 option.

The downside is that you’ll undoubtedly be a worse team next year by a pretty significant margin. They were AWESOME the second half of the year. This fanbase has starved for relevancy, and now they’re being shoved back into mediocrity.
One could’ve easily seen it as “LaMelo, Kon, Miller, figure out your bigs (they just drafted Steinbach) …. continue to build it out.” They just didn’t see it that way.
I do think the biggest piece of this is LaMelo’s durability.
