Also I'm glad the bulls picked up Drummand. I mean Kofi would have done the same thing for them for way less, but they needed a big bully type.

I'm a worrier. I'm worried that Ayo's going to play himself up into a trade prospect once Ball is healthy, and I'd love to see him stay in a prime role for the rest of my life with Chicago.
It's worse than that, because he's a second round pick he's an unrestricted free agent in the offseason and the Bulls have a ton of future money tied up in Caruso and the now dual durability worries of LaVine and Ball.

I hate to say it because I bet Ayo wants to remain a Bull as badly as we want him to, but if last night is indicative of his performance this year, the money just doesn't work.

But let's not be too negative about it, a monster second NBA contract is the life-changing moment the Ayo Dosunmu story has been leading to since even before U of I became a part of it.

Entirely possible but I also feel like his particular contract situation makes it less likely.

1. His salary is low so it doesn't help to offset a large salary coming in.

2. He's a FA after this season which minimizes his value to a team that would be giving up on this season and trading a valuable player to a contender. That team wants draft picks or young players that can help beyond this season.

3. In the Bulls give up on this season and trade him away to a contender, is Ayo really the first, second or even a top 20 choice as a 1/2 season rental for a contender? Ayo is great but if he's playing well enough that someone wants to give up draft picks to have him for half a season I have to imagine the Bulls are going to do whatever they can to re-sign him.

Agree. Almost hope Ayo goes to another team for a pay day. But let's not get ahead of ourselves. Most important thing is to have a good to great Ayo season so that NBA team(s) will want to pay him $10M+ type of salary.

That's the flip side of the scenario. Ayo plays so well and shows so much development that the Bulls deal Ball and make #12 a huge part of their future.
hard for me to see the bulls dumping a young, homegrown, POPULAR asset if the absolute best outcome is a 2nd round playoff exit. Bulls aren't getting to the finals with ZL, DD, and NV as their top 3

Ayo will be a RESTRICTED free agent, not an unrestricted free agent.

I just want to see him play well enough so he gets a big enough contract and he's rich forever. He meant so much for Illinois and took a chance on us when he didn't need to and most players wouldn't have been willing to, that I just want the best for him.

Would love if it could work out with the Bulls, but know what the modern realities of the NBA are like. As a Bulls fan, I say just take it step by step and see where it goes, if it makes sense to move him, that's fine, if he keeps getting better and better, maybe he becomes a core guy.

Being a 2nd round pick is probably going to end up working better for him it seems because he does get to hit RFA sooner, whereas if he were a first round pick, he'd be on a rookie contract for four years (even though he would have gotten more money his first couple years). Talen Horton-Tucker is a recent example of this. Compare him with Cam Reddish who was a Top 10 pick in the exact same draft. After this season, THT will have $22 million in career earnings, and Reddish will be at $19 million. The 20th pick in that draft (20th is probably on the high-end of where Ayo was being mocked) was Mattise Thybulle, who will be at $12 million after this season. So in THT's case, being a 2nd round pick helped him out a lot, because he got a 3 year/$30 million deal after just two years in the League (the Lakers stupidly chose to prioritize paying THT's "potential" over Alex Caruso, who fit that team like a glove and was a key contributor to their Bubble Championship).

In both my biased and non-biased opinion, Ayo is better than THT.

Shoot, you're right.

You can't be an UFA until after 3 years in the league. A second round pick can sign a deal that makes them an UFA at the end (a first rounder cannot), but Ayo's deal wasn't long enough.

So the Bulls will have the right of first refusal on an deal Ayo agrees with another team. That could get tricky.

It was some months ago that I looked, but I thought it was the Bulls had the right to match, not block. I think Ayo has an option year as well next year. But if he keeps playing at this level he’s clearly better off seeking a new deal. Would be happy to be corrected if this is wrong.

Drummond kind of sucks, but he's like an all time NBA great Rebounder. Kofi is just a dude. There's a reason he is unemployed at the moment.
In fairness, I think Kofi could be a very good rebounder in the NBA as well - he dominated in college and would be one of the biggest players in the NBA as well. The Drummond comp is not that far off - if this was 2012, Kofi would have been a lottery pick. Kofi was far more advanced offensively around the basket than Drummond was coming out of college - but I do think Drummond has a wingspan and athleticism advantage which makes the difference and why Drummond has been able to stay effective for 10 years in the NBA

The story is not over for Kofi though, I can see him finding an NBA team and being a good player down the line - his work ethic and untapped parts of his game can improve enough for him to be an NBA player IMHO
