Can’t fault Whitman much for the initial hire, but he’s stuck with Fahey WAY too long. Time for a change.

In the meantime, my daughter’s HS coach was just hired as head coach for the Phoenix Mercury. There’s outstanding coaching talent out there if you know where to look.

I know firing a coach mid-season creates a bad look, but something needs to be done. An initial mistake happens. Sticking with it when it has turned into a disaster is beyond reason.

Is there a good up-and-coming coach that we should look at once Whitman comes to his senses and let Fahey go?

What a beatin from Iowa.....a 25+ loss. It's got to be a friendship hire by JW.....this is beyond Embarrassing. I think they have bigger crowds at local high school girls games than Illini. Make a move....NOW !!

Champaign
Molly Miller the current Head Coach at Grand Canyon, would be a candidate in my book. She brought her D-2 school in here and beat Illinois in an exhibition. Watching how her team played really impressed me, well disciplined, fundamentally sound, actually ran an offense. They schooled Illinois that day.

There's just an overwhelming sense of ,"We don't have to tweak a damned thing in the women's program, cuz, nobody cares...the men are ranked and we focus on that every second of every day." If I'm on the team, I 'm insulted they havent changed much of anything in forever, and it's the same woeful or worse record year after year. Do better.

Fahey had the record coming in, but Division I hasn't worked for her. Tough way for her to go but she'll be able to pick up a good gig in the lower divisions.

Tough stretch for the women coming up. 9 games in 25 days. Hard to imagine that helps us.

If Whitman makes a move, I’d like to believe the success of MBB and what looks to be a football renaissance should make hiring a quality coach much easier.

How did Auriemma, Summitt and VanderDerveer achieve the success they have? They had every great recruit ever for years. Who funded allowing getting them every good woman basketball player every frigging year?

We are eons away from competing. And marketing is horrendous with women's basketball because I was an early proponent and I don't give one care about the WNBA. There is absolutely no push to promote these fantastic women athletes. Men with power push womens basketball and theyre only pushing what makes them bigger bucks.

And that is definitely not Illlnois at , what are we now, 9-10?

6-11 as we speak, 1-5 in the B1G. This issue will not be solved in January or February. Patience grasshopper. JW will act at season's end.

Not just meant to reply to you but this goes way beyond our current coach. Other than a couple good Grentz teams, in the last 30-40 years, what do we have? How is that possible given a pretty solid (maybe not great) group of high school girls basketball talent in our state?

It's time to take this program to the top of the big 10. UConn and Volunteers have proven this can be money making. Forget the D1 hockey and focus on making Illinois great in all sports- not just MBB.

I'll bet Illinois Hockey draws more than Women's BB and Soccer Combined. It's just not a good sell.....and being non competitive makes it worse. WNBA....who's dat?

You are correct and it's obviously the product of one bad coaching hire after another. Grentz was a good hire until she decided it would be a great idea to run off every decent player she had every year. Other than that it's been a parade of stooges.

Yes. and how the hell did Grentz go bad? She and Fahey seem like peas in a pod, yet I don't have a sense they even know each other. Whoever is coordinating lllinois WB is totally bad at what they do.

Grentz came in with great D1 credentials. Fahye came in with no D1 experience to speak of. They are not two peas in a pod. One was a successful D1 coach and the other... well, I leave that description to you.

Regardless, it is embarrassing situation that needs immediate correction. And, maybe that means replacing the coach... or maybe it means hiring better assistant coaches.

Get it done!
