With 4:00 minutes left, we were down 8 and Purdue had a 97.1% chance of winning. I can't believe we took this thing to overtime. Massive credit to Adalia for all the hustle plays, rebounding, and last-second steal, and KB for being dominant. Now let's win this thing.

this is despite shooting so poorly all game ... around 2 min left epitomized shooting woes when we got maybe 4 O rebounds and missed 5 shots, then next trip hit a 3 to bring it back to 4. but pure will power and grit down the stretch

Not living in Illinois anymore so I don't know, is the local media holding Coach Green responsible for the loss of so many close games? What is going on with the guards, they have a problem is it with each other, the coach or what? The lack of shooting from our two starting guards is not just bad it is awful, game after game. Tonight by my count 7 for 34 at 20%. Plus half effort on the D end of the court is hard to watch.

Adalia McKenzie played harder, showed more effort tonight than anyone all year. 15 points, 17 rebounds, 5 assist and so many small things done to win. She cares, she is a joy to watch. I know you have heard this before Kendall Bostic 24 points, 15 rebounds, 3 assist, 3 steals, 2 blocks. Those two almost won the game for us. Shame we lost this.

Bostic, McKenzie and Dolan 19-33. 57%
Rest of team 8-42. 19%

Thanks to the Orange Krush for coming to support the team. How I wish we had treated you to a win.

It was a tough night for Camille. We gave up 42 points in the paint. The freshman had her way in the lane.
KB gave it her all yet again. She is often guarding taller players but still finds a way to rebound. You know the kid from Indiana wanted to beat Purdue. Not sure we have the adjectives to describe the level of play the team is getting from Adalia.

When you are not hitting your shots maybe you look to put the ball with players who are. I think it is time to start running more plays for Dolan. I know she hesitated on pulling the trigger on a few open shots but she is a scorer. We also need to find the Brynn that played so well against Nebraska.
On to Northwestern.
Once An Illini. Always an Illini.

Another great entertaining game from the Illini Women. We could of used the injured Jada Peebles in this game. Next up NW at home on Thursday 6pm on BTN+.

So easy to forget for many that the Illini had not been to the Tourney in 20 years until Coach Green arrived here last year in her first season. Rebuilding from these depths does not happen overnight. Coach Green will get 'em there.

Green's biggest problem is roster construction. You can't have only 7 players see the court for an entire Big Ten season. I don't know if she did the same thing at Dayton, but it's not going to work in Champaign. Especially with an upgraded non-conference schedule like we saw this year. Either you play nothing but cupcakes in November/December (like in Green's first year), or you do something about your bench.

Agree on needing more minutes for bench if they r capable. Would like to see what Bollin could do with more minutes. Right now she appears to b rushing everything as if she only has a few minutes to impress.Hard to play that way. Rhodes did somegood things earlier in season. Minutes for the small guards need to b dialed back a little. Still fun to watch and what a change for the better.

It actually can be done with a 7-8 player rotation in Women's College basketball. Iowa is showing you it can be done for multiple seasons in the Big Ten. Teams can make the NCAA Tournament on 7-8 player rotations. We made the tourney last season on a short rotation. The difference is it takes talent and luck with injuries to make it successful.

I agree with you that I would like to see more players contribute off the bench. I also trust Coach Green with the process as some players aren't ready to contribute right away. The freshman/transfers are only going to get better practicing against the group we have now. They might not be the most talented but they also don't give up. I have talked about this before but this offseason/next offseason is huge for this program. Be interesting to see if Cook/Bryant come back for that extra year due to Covid. We could have 4-5 starters back again if everyone sticks around.

Just putting this on here as not want to start another post. I was never sold on Shoup-Hill being placed as a starter at the beginning of the season. I know we are undersized already but almost getting to the point I wouldn't mind them starting the 5 best players. Test out the waters at the beginning of the game and sub Hobby/Shoup-Hill in quick upon the flow of the game. Even if for one game to just change it up and the opposing team not expecting it.

Bryant

Will everyone with an extra Covid year be invited back?

Think the one question mark would be Aicha Ndour. She should have one year of eligibility left and Green brought her in. Ndour is a good story on/off the court. I wish her the best but that roster spot would be huge if it opened up. Sure will know more as the season goes on/Senior night activities

Hobby and Peebles are the only ones guaranteed gone and out of eligibility. Both of those spots are filled with recruits. There tends to be transfers out most seasons, even before the transfer rule. Last season Oden and Taponen.

Bostic graduated and is working on Master's Degree this year. She will be back next season

Cook and Bryant are the only other ones. Green brought both of them in and both are more than welcome back.

You mentioned roster construction and it's huge coming up. If everyone comes back or everyone but Ndour, you have 5-6 seniors next season. It will be interesting to see what happens......

I just watched the game from last night, it was so frustrating that I felt compelled to write this. To preface, I still have very high hopes for this group & program, but this is a significant regression from last year. Throughout this season, it jumps out to me that the core issue with our team is our lack of offensive production. We’re undersized from top to bottom, so naturally, we will struggle defensively. Which makes offensive production even more important.

In my opinion, the shot selection and distribution is the core issue. Bryant and Cook not only are taking poor shots, but they are taking a lot of them. And unfortunately, the cause of these poor shots isn’t due to broken plays or <10 on the shot clock. They occur early in possessions due to isolation. It’s concerning to see how common it is for Bryant/Cook to pull the ball out in the middle of a possession, call for a screen, put their head down and shoot a shot that is either contested or out of rhythm.

Take a look at Bryant and Cook’s effective FG %, relative to their FG attempts. We all know they both can score, but they need shots in the rhythm of the offense. They need to pass the ball or dribble drive to force the defense to shift, they will get it back later in the possession.

Lastly, I was curious to see how teams prep for us, so I watched the Purdue postgame press conference. I’m happy I did. Here’s the most telling quote from Coach Geralds: “Our goal today was to make Cook take more shots than she had points”. She then mentioned multiple times that they were just “Playing percentages” (shooting percentages).

Not only does it seem like Coach Green is perfectly fine with the shot selections from Bryant and Cook, but it looks like opposing coaches are as well. Like others on this forum have mentioned, Dolan needs more looks, and we have to expand the rotation.

It has been this way since conference play started full-time in January last season. We shot lights out against lighter foes November-December of 2023 and since then the true colors are shining. No doubt shot selection and level of competition have hindered the percentages.

Cook and Bryant are relied on too much because no one else creates plays. Throw in the outside shooting has gone down for everyone except Bostic. Teams just know how to scout our ladies. Each player has certain strengths and majority are limited.

Love McKenzie but she is not a 3pt threat. Shot around 33% non-conference last season, 6% during conference play last season and is at 18% this season.

Shoup-Hill shot 40% from 3pt range last season and just under 29% this season.

Cook at 34% last season(she shot just under 50% during Nov-Dec 2023), 31% this season.

Bryant at 40% last season(higher during non-conference), under 37% this season.

I love the effort of this group but the main starters haven't grown their game since last season. The ill-advised shots, back cuts from opponents, fronting post player with no help D, giving up bunch of offensive boards, knowing time possession, keeping yourself between opponent and ball and seeing both on out of bounds plays, etc happen each game. Majority of games have many fundamental breakdowns that are taught in practice. Considering the main core is back and Green seems to run a tight ship, JMO but think it falls more on the personnel than coach. Getting more talent will fix this but Green can only work so many miracles in a short time. Dolan has me excited, Wallace coming in next season has me excited.

I don't understand why Cook and Bryant drive to the basket so frequently. They're just too small convert the layup. Pull up and shoot the 10-footer.

One subtle difference this year. With the addition of Hobby at the five, Bostic has moved to the four. Last year Bostic was a wizard at clearing the lane for the guards to drive (think Giorgi Bezhanishvili). Though Hobby tries, she is less effective than Bostic was. Now, when our little guards try to go to the basket, they are often met with a big center even though they may have gotten past their own defender.

If you watch B10 WBB - Iowa, Indiana, Ohio State, Nebraska are great passing teams. Feed the low post. Backdoor cutters. Rapidly move the ball around the perimeter hunting the open 3 pointer.

Contrast Illinois where our guards dribble around then take a contested hard 2 pointer or drive the lane. Shauna has to force her players to run the offense. When you can't match the other teams in talent or size you need to outwork them.
