The refs were horrendous. I notice no one seems to have a problem with that statement when your team wins by 36.
It was a major topic of conversation in the game thread and many were displeased. That said, I may be bit if an outlier on this one. I thought outside of the final 10 minutes of the 1st half where they devolved into 90s-00s Pac10 refs calling touch fouls, they were actually quite good compared to the refs we have seen game to game. No, they didn't call fouls consistently half to half, yes they were very whistle happy that 1st half, yes they ignored some physical contact in the second half, yes they made a couple mistakes, but at any given point in the game, however they were calling the game at that time, was consistent for each team and each team did know what would be and what would not be a foul at that time. If Illinois got a foul for a reach in, they called USC for that same reach in. If USC got a foul for bumping someone on the drive, they called Illinois for similar bumps.

That's all I ask for from refs: 1. Call the game the same for each team. 2. Be consistent enough that everyone knows what is and is not a foul at any point in the game (if they can call fouls consistently under the same rule definition over the entire 40min, bonus points).

So, overall, I don't think the refs were great last night, and I don't like constant whistle blowing, but I did feel this crew was much much much better at calling the game the same for each team. And that in it of itself is much better than what I've seen most of this year. So I'd say they did a pretty good job overall. I can't complain.

Agreed. I thought the refs were wayyyy too involved in the first half to the detriment of the flow of the game. The calls were even, but with so many fouls early, it put a lot of players in foul trouble early on that could have an impact in a closer game.

I agree with this. While it was shocking after watching almost an entire season of B1G muggings not being called, it was refreshing to see a game called evenly on both sides… even if the whistles seemingly never stopped.

For the B1G to perform better in the NCAA tournament, this needs to happen more often. Our league is a lot rougher than most. The problem with that is all the B1G teams have to adjust their style of play for the Dance to something they have not been doing all year, and therefore, they get too many fouls early and lose in early rounds rather often. Or, maybe I want to be able to use that excuse for B1G teams (except YOU, ClownPants University, as you NEVER get any excuses).

Speaking of DGL... he's having a great year for UNLV. Avg almost 20-3-3 on 50% shooting. Albeit on a not very good UNLV team. Glad to see he's doing well though.
I think he might get another shot at a high major job next year after putting up those types of numbers

This Team is SPECIAL

BAM's SLAM was beyond FILTHY! It will be an all-time memorable moment for me.

Does anyone have the stat where we lead the B1G in 20+ point wins over the last few seasons?

Another record win in an opponents venue. That's HUGE!

Won't get too far ahead in thinking what we can do, but the ceiling is extremely high.

As @pruman91 said, we are SCARY GOOD

These teams are putting so much game planning on stopping Keaton and bullying him while everyone else reaps the benefits. That doesn’t work when all 5 players can torch you. With KB and AS back, glad to see our depth return. When Jake and Ben play like that….good night!!!

Yea I really hope teams keep putting all their effort into stopping Keaton because the rest of the team will absolutely feast if they do.

Phenomenal post. This was my takeaway as well. As long as they are consistent, I have no issue. Was not the same case in our MSU or Wisconsin games.

I do not watch Illinois games with the main hope of it being aesthetically pleasing. All I care about is an Illini win.

If I was him, I wouldn’t take it. I would stay where he’s had success.

Though follow the money I guess. It’s his last chance to earn it.

On the Refs. I really wish they would call the holds and heavy contact at point of attack against KW as fouls, the kid gets no help from them.

The ref that called basket interference, had no effing business making that call from his viewpoint, just a horrible call. To that point, it never should have went to video review because the baseline ref should have had control of that call.

Boswell was great tonight and it’s silly to complain about anything in such a dominating win. . But there were a few times he took quick shots forcing the issue and tried to drive with no one else down the court yet that had me thinking- didn’t he get the memo? We don’t do that anymore, pull it back and wait for a better shot- etc, I’m sure it will happen, but something to monitor
That’s the perfect time to push it down court.
1:1, everyone else back on other side of half court. Make it , great. Miss it-not a breakaway/ quick change the other way.
Plus Illini are known not to have fast breaks- something else for teams to prepare for, maybe not crash boards as much and that’s a plus for Illini.

Perhaps there is some confusion about my post here. I'm not sure. My point was, if your team loses and you complain about refs, some will simply say you're blaming the refs for the loss and your bias is skewing your perception. However, if your team wins by 36 and you criticize the refs during and after the game, there doesn't seem to be much backlash about that. As if the only legitimate critiquing of officiating can occur after a win. Hopefully that makes sense.
