What particularly interesting is if we lost there would be 700 posts on how miserable we are and how the program is failing. When we win.....crickets.
You must have a short term memory..... because at half time everybody was calling him out for his dumb approach to end the first half and we were still up 10. Its not going away brother. He's earned the reputation at this point. Get off your high horse.

This same statement could be said about every coach after every game from now until the end of time. Because:

1. No coach is perfect.
2. The general public only has access to a tiny fraction of the available information that goes into a coach making a particular decision.
3. Coaches have to make decisions before the eventual outcome occurs. Whereas fans get to judge each decision based on the eventual result after said result occurs.

And if we were to let the “couch coaches” in the game thread who are simply “questioning Brad’s dumb decisions” coach this season, we would’ve lost 20 games.
It’s a message board. Questionng things is what we do. Again, I’m not a Brad hater and I’m happy he’s our coach, but if you think his in game decisions are beyond reproach, then I’m not sure what to tell you other than I disagree. Couch coaches aren’t always wrong. I’m done now. Goodnight and go Illini

It's not that anyone thinks his every decision is beyond reproach, it is that there's a continuous avalanche of nit-picky and oftentimes completely bogus criticism from non-experts that naturally turns on a defense mechanism from certain observers.

Look at tonight? We were never seriously threatened in the game, but the game thread would have had you believe we were getting manhandled, out-schemed, out-hustled, out-toughed, out-executed, etc. It's just clutter at this point.

Here's a good heuristic: If you would never in a million years say it to the coaching staff's or players' faces in, say, a presser, then don't post it.

It’s satisfying and doesn’t mess up anyone’s day/night. They played like we want our team to play.

With that said, people shouldn’t get high praise for doing what they’re supposed to do. I would hope losing in the first round would bring some fire to life long fans. But having nearly a week off to prepare to play, making in-game adjustments, being a top 10 ranked team most of the season should come with expectations to beat the brakes off of a not-so-good Penn team.

It was fun to watch. Not gonna lie, an Austin Pea like loss woulda have had me furious. But I’m not and that’s how life should be as an Illinois basketball fan.
We were only supposed to beat them by 25.5, so we did a good amount better than we were supposed to ;)

Mirk was amazing. VCU is 16-1 heading into to game against our Illini. We have not proven all year we can play 40 minutes of great basketball. I hope we can come out and achieve something special. Really tough match up. We do horrible against good athletic guards. Go Illini!

boy, Wagler sure launches 'em from deep. I sure like the 2 turnovers for the entire game. Anytime Petrovic is in there I'm seeing wholesale PG player.

Great second half. Felt like a get right game at the exact right time against an overmatched an undermanned Penn team, who I actually thought competed and made tough shots most of the night.

For me the biggest nit is there were still a few times where we let up when we were on the verge of taking control of the game. I think we were up maybe 15 in the first half and Kylan threw up a wild shot in transition that led to a transition 3 for Penn. poor defense on the 3 to end the half. And we finally got up 21 in the second half only to give up 5 straight points on second chance buckets.

Now, you can take any game and pull out a handful of plays where a guy falls asleep on defense and gets back cut, someone throws a lazy pass/takes an ill advised 3 etc so those things do happen. But it was the timing of our lapses that was mildly concerning. Letting teams hang around in the tourney is playing with fire.

But overall great win.

I would really like to put a dislike button on this comment. I can think of several games where we played 40 minutes of very good basketball. Mizzou for one.

Its funny everyone (including myself) talking so much about Mirk and then there's Keaton with another quiet performance in his freshmen tourney debut. 18 point, 7 rebounds, 7 assists, 1 steal, 1 block, 1 turnover. Thats an All-American right there.
