I'm sure how knows how much traffic it generates to his Twitter account and the News & Observer website from our fan base...
Without a doubt. But generating traffic by being a clown, well, maybe his editors don’t know enough about basketball.

It would be sad, hoewever, if this group makes enough of an impact on his traffic because there aren’t that many of us, and most of us haven’t gone to the N-O much, if at all.

He’s reveling in the attention, however, though it should be noted that a turd in the punch bowl attracts attention too. Hi, Luke.

One thing I think people might have missed is look at the top 10 again. We have played or will play 5 out of the 10 teams. I know Kansas didn't count, but no one can argue our strength of schedule.

Personally, I like this ranking. Why? Guys like the Illini have are veterans who know it is better to play with a chip on your shoulder and feel a lack of respect. There are several teams ranked ahead of the Illini that have some doubt when they take the court. Kansas, Marquette, FAU and Tenn. are three that know they require a little bit of luck if asked to play the Illini with the season on the line. Much better to take the court feeling you need to prove yourself than that you have proven yourself. Especially when you can't wait for tomorrow because you will be better than today.
Do you really think that being ranked 11th in the country vs 7th puts a chip on their soldier? This is a team that's locked in on conference play, then the conference tournament, then the big one. That's where you prove your worth.

Rankings are for the fans. I would say that being outside of the top 25 might MIGHT ruffle some feathers, but outside of that....who really cares?

One thing to keep in mind, the rankings are not linear:

We’re 52 votes away from being ranked 9th, 171 votes away from being ranked 8th. And we’re 135 votes away from being ranked 12th.

So we’re closer to 9th than 12th and almost as close to 8th as 12th. Keep winning and we’ll move up quick.

I think Illinois should be in the top 10 based on their resume but I understand that can be debatable. Two things I don't understand from all of this.
1. How can two teams ranked in the top 5 loose a game and not be affected in the polls?
2. I have no idea who DeCock is, but how can the guy be given a vote in something like this if he is just voting based on his personal team likes and dislikes? With Illinois' resume at this point it is not possible to seriously have them not rated or even at #21.

I think we have a chip on our shoulder no matter what we’re ranked. Just take care of business and things work out. We’re a true team! Love it!
I agree with this, and it excites me. Guys like TSJ, Dain and Ty have the bad taste in their mouths of a disappointing season last year with rumors flying about team chemistry. Guys like Goode and Coleman have been around long enough to be annoyed by the “Underwood can’t make a Sweet Sixteen” narrative. New guys obviously should have a hunger to prove themselves.

The difference in intensity this year vs. last is astounding.

I certainly think we a pay A LOT more attention to Illinois' ranking than the people ranking us. I really really dont think voters have it out for us amymore than they do any other team. They have their list, they adjust based on a big win or loss, then just keep the rest of the teams on the same train.
Yes, because most people that post on this board are in fact crazy people.

I love them.

Look at their schedules and who they've beaten. Look at our schedule and who've we beaten.

FAU is an outstanding team and that was a great win. Outside of that however, how many other top 25 teams have we beaten? What truly impressive wins do we have comparatively?

Yes, losses matter, but so do wins.

As far as this DeCock fella, he gets a vote. For whatever reason, he's earned that vote. If he doesn't view us as a top 10 team, so be it. I think that him having us at #21 is wrong, but I also think Gary Parrish having us at #5 is wrong. If we split the difference, we'd be at #13, with the real # being #11.

No harm, no foul. Keep plugging along.

These are opinions. in 2005 we lost our last game in the regular season and didn't change in the polls.

If you had a vote, would you raise, lower, or keep the vote the same for Illinois if we went to Purdue and lost by 5?

One of my favorite games of all time happened 40 years ago. We lost to Kentucky and that actually put us in the poll when we hadn't been previously.

Further, the polls are an aggregation of opinion. As I noted above, voters may not change their opinion of a team after a loss because they expected them to lose.

You really have to look at individual votes to ascertain inconsistencies.

Kansas is rated by name only. They are under-performing. Pre-Season rankings are rediculous. Plus, once you are rated #1, it takes a lot to drop down in the poles.
