This is my favorite stat of the game. Assists on 70% of makes? Yes please.

Thrilled with the performance!
As far as the wire to wire blowout, I think we were behind 4-3 at one point. Only to score ~20 straight.
I think I only screamed REBOUND! once, when they got a rebound on a free throw. I think my over/under for the REBOUND! yell in atypical game is ~6. Rebounding margin was insane! 62-18! Granted we had a lot of defensive rebounds.
Curbelo had some TOs, but I think half were the receiver not being prepared. Looking at the stats, I guess only 4. 6 assists. Took a charge early. I think he has an outside chance of being the most memorable player out there, likely see 4 full years of him. 10 pts, 8 RBs, 6 assists, quietly. 3 of 4 from the field.

Happy Thanksgiving and go ILLINI!

Great observation....Reminded me of a Lite version of the 2005 team ball movement. Hope to see this against some better defensive teams Coming up.
That team averaged ~65% on assists that year. Thats kind of the benchmark in my mind.

Any discussion of ball movement with the 04-05 team always leads me to this video. Never gets old!

Looks like total buy in from our players. Willingness to share the ball and work for a better shot at this very early stage augers extremely well.

Not in love with cupcakes, but love the opportunity it creates for our lesser minutes guys.

It reallllllly sucks that after all these years of mediocrity (or worse), we can't be in the arena to give these guys the love they deserve, especially Ayo and Kofi.
I absolutely agree with this. I would love to be at SFC and on the road supporting this year too. I feel bad for the school after several years of mediocre attendance, this year was going to be nearly fully sold out likely. I do like our teamā€˜s swagger and overall mentality though and I donā€™t think they will require crowds to get pumped Up to play their best.

I don't know if I'd say our attendance has been mediocre over the years. It's always been pretty solid. Speaking as a now less than 1 year removed graduate who went to practically every game.

But yes - would be great to give these guys the love they deserve.

These guys look like they are locked in, on a mission. Absence of fans will have no bearing on their performance.

Looking forward to playing much better teams,

Mediocre maybe was not the right word, but it has been down a bit in recent years from peak levels. The bar was pretty high back when you could pencil in 16,450 for every game. I know the SFC refurbishment dropped capacity by about a thousand. Last few years average attendance 2020- 13k, 2019-12.5k, 2018-12.5k, 2017-11.3k, 2016-12.7k, 2015-14.6k, 2014- 15.2k, 2013-15.0k, 2012-14.9k.

I also agree/hope this continues to be true. I could see the absence of fans almost helping, as it allows a full focus on the game. Could particularly see this being the case for those that might let the crowd get to them, i.e. the streakier shooters like DMW.

I'll drink to that!

Just want to see us do to Baylor what a previous team did to Wake. Then we can start the comparisons. Looking great but itā€™s one in a row.

Alright folks, I loved, and I mean LOVED, what I saw from Ace out there. So solid, shooting was smooth, big frame. He does look like he has the tools to play wherever, but there has been two references to Larry Bird??! Bird is one of the greatest players in the history of basketball. There are many other athletic shooters that are a more apt comparison than Larry Freaking Bird. Who by the way averaged 32.8pts/13.3rb/4.4as/2.8steals his freshman year. Get outta where those comparisons. Kofi and Ayo remind me of Wilt and MJ while we are at it...

Trents 2- 10. Brought down the fabulous shooting percentage. I hope weā€™re not hoping for him to find his shot, because he never did last year. Maybe heā€™s not as good of a shooter as we all think. I do love his defense.

Trent will find his shot. 2 years of good shooting and 1 off year.... Yea, I think he's legit. Forever going to be one of my favorite Illinois players

I hope to have some time to work on some data visualization tools this season. Here's what I had worked up at the (premature) end of last season, for the first game. Still a bit rough, but the idea is to show a graphical breakdown of a game.

The three main boxes are threes, twos, and free throws (full box = attempts, shaded area = made).

The red boxes are turnovers.

In the middle, the shaded portion is the number of possessions in the game, and the purple boxes are offensive rebounds per team.

Because of the way things are aligned, you can quickly look at the red/purple boxes to see whether a team had a net gain or loss of possessions due to ORebs and TOs. For example, in this game Illinois gained 5 possessions and NC A&T lost 6 or 7.

Guess we now see what Alan Griffin saw... noice.

Hindsight is 20/20. No way Griffin could've known Ayo was coming back. Pure serendipity on his part. Hated him bolting, but very pleased the impact looks like it'll be minimal (or non-existent).

Was not using hindsight in my view - was I thinking more like AceWolf was taking his spot regardless. Can defend, dribble, and can shoot lights out. I would not see both Miller and AG out there at the same time for too many minutes.
