This week 4, 5, 6, 7, 10, & 12 lost.

Best case scenario: We land @ #7. We jump all 6 teams who lost in front of us.

Worst case scenario: We land @ #12. We jump 10 & 12, but FAU jumps us.

My gut says we'll land at #11. We'll jump 12, 10, and 7 (Oklahoma, who only played once this week) but not 4, 5, or 6 (too far to go, and all of those teams also had a win this week) - and FAU will jump us to land at #10.

Jumping 10 and 7 doesn’t land us at #11. 😂

I could see that.

One other potential scenario I could see is what you described + jumping Marquette. Marquette now has 3 losses, so I could see them tumbling down to 11, we go to 10, & FAU to 9.

We were very close in votes to FAU, so I think them jumping us is fairly likely:

I think we will be in the top 10 but nothing lower. We beat FAU by 9 on a neutral court and played Tennessee and Marquette fairly close for most of the game.

The only ranking that truly matters is the one at the end of the season when selection time rolls around. Personally, I'd rather see us ranked as low as possible now so our players' heads don't swell. We'll need as much humility as possible come our next big conference road test.

This is such a silly take every time I see it. A good team doesn't get swollen heads. A good team generates national attention (which REQUIRES a good AP ranking) and turns their success on the court and media attention into a recruiting, attendance, and donation boon. This is even more important in the age of NIL.

Rankings matter. Full stop.

I think his point was rankings are great, but ultimately and in the grand scheme of things....nobody remembers.

Outside of our fans, who remembers us being a #1 seed(and top ranked) and who remembers us losing to Loyola in the tournament?

Keep in mind, in the off-season, when 40% of this board is irrational and is calling for BU's head or putting him in the "hot seat"....the season's high watermark for ranking is never, ever brought up.

Soft stop and open to criticism.

If anyone wants to bookmark this post until the end of March, we can revisit and test both theories.

And yet, in national broadcasts, the commentators routinely talk about Illinois' Renaissance under Underwood and out conference championship and #1 seed and the like. A very visible sign showing the respect of national voters (and not just our fans or other Big Ten fans) is only a good thing.

I'm his defense, this take typically pops up when Illinois is finding themselves falling out of the top 25. It doesn't get brought up much when we are moving into the top 10

Exactly ...at this point the big dance, ratings are all speculation.
