I personally want us to always win by a lot. However, in the end it's the right thing to do. Imagine if he scored then we suffered an injury on defense because we gave the ball back to FAU.

I can guarantee Iowa coaches are not telling their players to go down before the end zone. Ferentz's son would be out of a job if players started doing that. Iowa's fan base would probably cheer if a player intentionally kept points off the board in a victory. But it's Iowa so who cares....

You know if you never pass the ball there’s a zero chance of an interception Coach Hayes.

My concern isn’t the particular play as much as it is the mindset. Tepper and to a much more normal degree Bret play too conservative for my taste and that will bite you in the !!!. Get down big and we have no ability to make a comeback. Have a small lead and play it close to the vest and a fluke play gives you a loss. Score as much as you can and worry about a miracle comeback rather than nurse a 6 point lead because you’re scared a team might somehow score two TDs in 90 seconds.

While there probably are a few examples of a team scoring two TDs in 90 seconds they are far and few between. Cite one for us

Finally I’m a huge Bielema fan, wanted him way before most on this board came around, but I hate these kind of ultra cautious decisions. Yes there was a tiny chance they’d score two 2tds in 90 seconds but what? .001%. I’d throw caution to the wind, score the TD and have faith in my team that they can close out the win.
How many times have we seen a team lose when they got to victory formation?

I think coaching is more than following charts and graphs. (They’re not accountants). It’s about having a feel for a game.

When you get a turnover inside the other team’s 40, you many times throw a deep ball to the end zone. The percentages probably aren’t great to connect for the TD but if you do, you break their backs emotionally. These are momentum changing opportunities. Not a time for studying a chart.

I understand the statistical argument but I’d rather take a slight risk and score points.

All of this being said I think Bret is a great coach. I just disagree with the lay down.

As Juice Williams said: “we’re the fighting Illini. Not the lay down Illini”

Adding on what about going for it on 4th down on the first drive instead of taking the field goal? Doesn't exactly scream conservative to me.
It was a horrible call! Take the opening kickoff, score 3 points, you have some momentum. Get stuffed on 4th and short, FAU has all the momentum. It was a while before we got it back. Kept FAU in the game IMHO.
I realize that coach wanted to drive a stake in FAU's heart, but unfortunately we fell on the sharp pointy stake.

I wonder if it had to do with the lack of confidence in our kicking game? It was 4th and 3, so I agree it was a bad call to go for it given our lack of push from the line through the first 3 games.

So, we left a field goal on the table on the first drive. Left a touchdown on the table on the last drive. Missed an extra point. Add those 11 points to the 23 and we get 34 . . . more in line with the amount of offense we generated.
FAU was trying let us score on that last Feagin run. If they are playing real defense we don’t come close to scoring.

agree that was obvious .
Feagin seems to be a good one, but that was like Moses parting the Red Sea

that was all anticipated beforehand by our coaching staff and the players were told what to expect

Best thing about the Feagin slide is that it kept OUR defense off the field thereby avoiding the per usual end of game senseless injuries. I'll be at least the DL bought Feagin a nice juicy steak dinner that night!!
