Lots of losses above us this week, but most of them too high for us to pass. Maybe we tick up two spots?

Man, that Minnesota loss …
Yep. Then we’d be lamenting the PSU loss.

That one’s a stretch. Had we beaten Minny, when the CFP rankings come out this week we’d be somewhere in the 12-15 range depending on how the committee weighs three-loss Alabama and Ole Miss against a Big Ten team with two losses, on the road, against #1 and #4. Would have been glorious to be in that debate.

Still glorious we're even talking about this.

meh, we still would not get in at 10-2 with 4 B1G schools ahead of us

the most precious spot to be in if you don't win ur conference is the 5-12 spot.

as a 2-3 loss SEC team, i'd much rather be the 12 seed than 6-11. you'll face boise state as the 4 seed if you win your first game - as ridiculous this is and sounds. not to mention the fact that you'll face notre dame as a 5 seed - a team that is completely unproven after week 1, has the worst loss in the country, and is getting in solely by playing a lagging schedule.

Oh well. It is Illinois football. If we beat Minnesota, we would have probably crapped the bed against Michigan State. I will be completely content and happy with this season if Illinois dominates NW to get to 9-3. And as noted, even if we got to 10-2, we would probably still be outside looking in.

if we had scored on the first and goal from the 1, went on to beat PSU and then also beat MINN while also still winning all our other close calls this season we’d be the 7 seed

Rooting for Chaos

Illinois chances to reach the CFP are, at best, extraordinarly long. The absurd cascade of events that would have to take place for that to happen is not even worth mentioning.

Having said that... let me mention that absurd cascade, and how you should root for Illinois to sneak in to one of. the 12 spots.

Oklahoma State over Colorado
Texas over Texas A&M
Mississippi State over Ole Miss
Texas San Antonio over Army (or Navy over Army the following week)
Nevada over UNLV
Memphis over Tulane
Houston over BYU
Arizona over Arizona State
Kansas State over Iowa State
Auburn over Bama
Cal over SMU
Oregon State over Boise State
Vandy over Tennessee
Syracuse over Miami
USC over Notre Dame
Purdue over Indiana
Georgia Tech over Georgia
South Carolina vs Clemson? -- Probably South Carolina

To be clear, not all of these things need to happen -- but MOST of them do. And, there's no guarantee even that if every one of them happened, Illinois would get the nod. So it's probably easier to just appreciate a possible 9 win regular season and go get win number 10 against a high power SEC team which will probably see a lot of its players sit out the bowl game. But at least you now have a checklist for this weekend.

We'll get in if all of those happened. Guarantee is a strong word but, I mean... I think.

And we don't need all of them like you said (i.e. Boise State because 1 G5 is getting in anyway), and some of those teams are even below us (i.e. colorado). Not sure if we need all of the teams above us either (i.e. UGA, Tennessee who I doubt will be below us even at 3Ls).

We need most though. Very unrealistic. Better to just be appreciative at the season that was.

If you put that into a 19-leg parlay (including Illinois over NW; no books would accept that), the odds have to be less than .00001% chance of happening (heck Purdue is currently +2000 on the ML). This would literally be college football's version of the lottery.

We are in the position to beat NW and get a Citrus Bowl matchup with most likely either Bama or Ole Miss. We have a much better chance beating either of those teams in the Citrus Bowl compared to the CFP (opt outs, etc.). If Illinois can get to 10 wins, it will go down as the best Illini team (in a record sense) since 2001. Exciting times for this program, but first beat the Mildcats!

If a 3 loss team makes the playoffs it's a mess. I would obviously love it to be us, but I don't like the idea of it. There are a tonof teams that took care of their games at home, lost to the playoff teams on their schedule, and then lost a toss up. Nothing differentiates these teams except brand recognition.

With all of the crazy losses this week, does Illinois have an outside chance at the playoff? (Likely no) what would have to happen for them to have ~a chance~ at getting in? I am assuming having a few SEC teams drop a bad loss. Maybe a ND loss to take them out of the playoff. Thoughts?
