Well done, sir. Good memories. I lived in Snyder Hall, directly across Peabody Drive from the stadium, that fall of '85. We had a lot of out-of-towners sleeping in the stairwells that weekend. And I saw Don Henley at the Steak and Shake on Green.

(It's the original Farm Aid concert, for those of a certain, much younger, age.)

Hot take: he'll get a shot with a pro team. His instincts and decision making are exceptional. Some pro teams may look solely at physical measureables, but he seems to have "it."
He's performed at a really, really high level the last few weeks against some excellent, sound defenses.

The measureables will be a problem for him at the next level though. Not an explosive arm, his listed height of 6'2" is clearly a tad generous, and his mechanics aren't exactly the prototype.

The spaces and windows he exploits get so, so small in the NFL. It doesn't matter how fast you can read and process if you can't smoke the ball in there a lot of the time.

Drew Brees would disagree with you.

I was around for '83, '89, '90, and '01. In each of those seasons it was clear by the first weekend in October that the team had something special. '07 was nice but had some October stumbles (Michigan, Iowa.) And '11, of course, went from 6-0 to a dumpster fire by early November (the sword of Damocles always seemed to be hanging over the Zooker's teams.)

I don't know if I'm just getting old and grumpy, but since the Indinia game I keep telling myself that this team is overachieving and isn't comparable to those earlier teams. Then Wisconsin raised my eyebrows. And Iowa was a rock fight gut check. All the while I kept telling myself that if they handled Minnesota in mid-October I'd feel differently.

And I do. There's something happening here, as Stephen Stills once sang. But what it is ain't exactly clear / There's Chase Brown and our D with a gun over there / Tellin' me (and opponents) that we got to beware.

Here are the best Illini starts since the epic 1963 season Rose Bowl champions:

1963: 5-0-1
1982: 5-2
1983: 10-1
1989: 7-1
1990: 6-1
2001: 10-1
2011: 6-1
2022: 6-1

This fall is tied with 2011 and 1990 for the third best start in 59 seasons since the '63 team. If the boys win in Lincoln in two weeks they'll be tied with '89 for the second best start.

Third best. Maybe, two weeks from now, second best. 59 seasons. I'm 56. I can't get my head around this.

There's something happening here. :illinois::chief:
83 was historic. Beat every other B10 team. Never happened before. Will never happen again.

After reading your post what I got out of it was "original steak and shake on Green street ".

PJ and his crew have rowed the boat to Paxton so far on the way home.
I got some shade thrown on my Caddyshack gopher reference earlier in the week. And, granted, it was obvious, hackneyed, trite, beneath contempt and, of course, so utterly obvious that only someone like me lacking sufficient creativity, strength and impulse control would post it.

Nevertheless, I offer three further, quite appropriate, GIFs from that marvelous film describing the burned, salted Plains of Fleck:

(1) PJ addressing his players after their three-hour subjugation under the Illini boot (and it's "are" not "aren't" for the love of Pete!):

(2) Mrs. Fleck christening the Ski-U-Mah clipper: "I dub thee the Flying WASP!"
