What's the reason to return the last timeout to TN after the first down? They should know the clock stops because of the first down, and if they don't and waste a TO call shouldn't that be on them? Am I missing something?

Okay I have to ask - I was unable to catch the first half of the game plus a bit of the third quarter and I’m finally trying to watch the whole game, but YouTube TV seems to have played commercials over significant chunks of the game. Did anyone watching the game on YouTube TV notice this too or did my recording go weird?

I wondered that as well. To be fair, I wondered why Illinois had its last timeout returned when the Beatty play went to review.

In the end, neither situation really had an impact. No matter what, Illinois was going to kick a field goal on the last play.

I don’t think they called a TO. Or, they were not aware Illinois got the first. Whatever it was, there was confusion not because of the rules, but of the situation. The refs messed something up.

Despite knowing how awful Illinois football has been, this following fact still seems CRAZY to me: Bret Bielema is the first coach since Ray Eliot in 1952 to win two bowl games in his entire Illinois tenure.

Ray Eliot - 2-0
Pete Elliott 1-0
Mike White 0-3
John Mackovic 1-1
Lou Tepper 1-2
Ron Turner 1-1
Ron Zook 1-1
Vic Koennig 1-0
Tim Beckman 0-1
Lovie Smith 0-1
Bret Bielema 2-1

All other coaches did not coach a bowl game.

Even crazier is that Mike White, considered by most to be an Illini coaching legend, never won a bowl game.

  • Illinois is now 13-4 in one-score games over the last three seasons, with 9 of the 13 wins coming in the final minute of regulation or overtime.
There has been some discussion here about Luke’s ranking among all-time Illini QBs.

While it’s likely we have had several with better overall skills (depending on how you measure and rate such skills), Luke has to be the most clutch of all time.

Sounds like a whole lot of similarities w/what the SC fanbase had to say after last year's bowl game.
So what you're saying is that the SEC is full of crybabies that aren't nearly as good as ESECPN says they are? Kleenex better start stocking up that part of the country...
sad this is us GIF by Twitter

Kind of like when TSJ graduated… of course the program moves on and new talent comes in, but it’s hard to imagine another player having the unique ability to lead a team to victory with the level confidence that Luke has.

Which is why I’m still baffled that Penn State and Michigan got the coaches they did with the ADs they have.

But like I said in a different post, programs like that just have more room for error.
I'm not baffled; I'm disappointed but unsurprised.

The difference in program brand value between Wisconsin in 1990 and Illinois in 2021 (let alone early-2016 Illinois when Josh arrived) and 2025 Penn State and Michigan, is fairly stark.

Luke was not Grange special nor Butkus special , but for the program in the time we are in , he was special to us .

the odds of getting an all round good guy / student / athlete / loyal to the program lad like him are almost impossible .
we got really lucky with Luke and taking him was easy once Card took the bag from Walters . Ironic

Also floated on the Vols board, paraphrasing...Bret ordered Olano to kick the ball short of the goal line and let the returner score.
I didnt think much of the comment until laying in bed, wondering about why Olano would kick to the returner when he could have easily put it in the back of the end zone.
If Bret and staff did put the whammy on, its genius. Right?
As other have said, we were kicking into the wind, but I have a lot of questions maybe others can help answer. When I saw the in-game replay of the kick-off returned for a TD, I noticed it wasn't David Olano kicking off. It was #27 Lucas Osada. I haven't watched a replay of the game yet, but when I saw Osada did that kick-off I wanted to know: When did that change from Olano to Osada kicking off happen? Did Osada handle all of the previous kick-offs during the game? If so, was his (or Olanao's) distance kicking into the wind similar to the TD kick-off? The kick-off coverage on the TD return almost cost us the game, but did a shorter-than-expected kick-off set the stage for that? Inquiring minds would like to know.

Luke was our off official big first step into the modern era of football. 3k yard passer, 9+ wins back to back. Important to take the next steps forward.

I posted this in the in game thread
How odd was the field goal ref on the left side as the kick went over slightly left of the upright on the missed FG ?

He did all he could do to signal "good" , but then looked to his right and that guy was waving it off, so he followed then too. but he had the better look

It really does have to be jarring for the SEC fans to realize that they are not as superior or good as they've been led to believe. It (may) just mean more, but that means it hurts a lot when you get your collective butts kicked.
Agree, but I am not sure they quite realize it yet, though. I think they are still in that bubble of self-denial and self-delusion. It will take a while. Some may be starting to realize it, but I don’t think it has filtered down to most of them yet.

There was one thing I’m not sure has been mentioned but several times Tennessee players went out of their way to slam our guys down hard rather than just tackle them. Isn’t that a foul?
yeah, apparently they focused their energy on punking us instead of winning the game.... ill take the win (and self respect)

and the announcers made a joke about it to compliment the defensive player smh
