I only looked in on the game thread once — right after the Valentine fumble. Not surprisingly a lot of the posts were of the woe is we, we suck, God hates us type. But I saw a few saying the Illini player in end zone (Arkin I think) showed poor effort not to recover it. Calling BS on that. He had to go through/over a USC player and just ran out of momentum when on ground and when missed with his first grab. If he had been completely on ground rather than half on USC player, he might have been able to crawl forward for a second attempt on recovery, but it had nothing to do with effort.

As for the game, it absolutely wasn’t pretty but Illini got the job done. Kudos to them. If not for a 24-point swing because of those two fumbles, likely would have had a lopsided win over #21 team in country. Hopefully the backs learn from that and protect ball the rest of the way.

Henry is not a DC coordinator on major Big10 team though. I stick by that. I truly like him. But No. Go do what Ohio state buckeyes did with Matt Patricia. Genius move. We do have 2 million to pay a Defense Coordinator. DO IT!

Many parallels to the Purdue game last season, but higher stakes. Felt like we controlled the game for 3+ quarters and then made mistakes.

Huge last drive to get into field goal range. Props to the OL all day. They took the embarrassment of last week and put it on USC. Altmyer with a clean pocket and time is super dangerous.

Things to clean up, but this win with a prime audience should help with program perception after last Saturday.

The defense was abused all day, but USC is very potent offensively (might not see another offense like that the rest of season).

So happy the team overcame two goal line turnovers...past Illini squads would have folded. This team is mentally strong. Need to bring the fire next week to maintain the Cannon.

On to West Lafayette!

I don’t know if it’s Henry’s issue. Heckel was there twice to make the play and didn’t. We missed a lot of tackles. Need to have better play out of linebackers and secondary. We had them 3rd and long at least twice and gave up floating passes for drive sustaining 1st downs. Ball security better be addressed also. 2!!! Touchdowns taken off the boards because of that. Game wouldn’t have been close.
I think it's more of a talent problem than coaching problem.

A most entertaining game that showed the large gonads of this special Illini squad in maintaining their resolve with David Olanna kicking a 41 yd FG to lift the Illini to a 34-32 victory......oh yeah !!!!!!!!!!.....Leading most of the game to eventually falling behind
32-31 with 1:40 + left , the Illini march down the field to secure the win.................

Numerous chances to win going away resulted in 2 Illini fumbles within 3 yds of the goal line showed me that the Illini would not be denied today.....this win washes a lot of the stink off of last weeks game and gets us back on track for a special season........

Luke showed today what he can do with enough time to zero in to the open Illini WR........

My heart is still racing but I have a big smile on my face and a big sigh of relief..........I think the trojans thought they were going to come in and do a slap down of the beloved , but not so fast our so cal rival...........Both Illini lines held firm and gained a lot of redemption today........................

Maybe it’s just me, but I thought it was USC making plays as much as it was our defense. I don’t know how many absolutely perfect balls their QB threw but it was a lot. Heckel was right there on the game tying TD, just a perfect back shoulder throw.

We can definitely play better on defense, but I also think a tip of the cap to USC is in order.

Gritty, gritty win.
Their receivers made some great catches also. That one in triple coverage was high level.

Good teams find a way to win … Gritty win …

OL much improved … Offense looked good … Ball security is the drill of the week …

Defense … Work to be done … A lot of it … Tackling is the drill of the week …

Few hours to enjoy this and onto the next opportunity …

Enjoy the afternoon ladies & gents …

Much needed after that …
