This is exactly why I'm calling bull on that story. If the whole team had food poisoning, I hate to see what Makai Lemon looks like fully healthy.
can this be submitted for short form Oscar consideration? our media team is seriously talented

He was. There was another sideline one earlier in the game (on I think a different receiver). Both were subtle & not big blowup hits so probably why they didn't get called but Hank's especially & maybe the other one were crown of the helmet hits. I hate that rule with every ounce of my being since there is no room for discretion on the ejection side. Ejection should only happen on clearly dirty hits not the ones that are part of the game action.Forgive me if this was discussed earlier in the thread, but did anyone else think Hank Beatty was the victim of a missed targetting call on a sideline tackle in the 3rd quarter? I saw it live from the stands on the opposite side of the field and was yelling for a targetting review (since it wasn't called on the field). Watch the play from the 11:10 to the 11:20 mark of FOX USC vs. Illinois Game Highlights
Appears to be a clear lead with the crown of the helmet by the USC defender that, from this camera angle at least, deserved a targetting review. It would take another camera angle to prove it was NOT targetting against Beatty in my opinion.
The real mistake in that whole scenario was not that Mackovic left, but that we did the whole thing backward. Since he vacated the AD position, both AD & coach were vacant. A competent athletic department would hire the AD & then let the AD hire his football coach (the premier coaching hire for any major athletic department).Mackovic never for a second intended, or even intimated, that he viewed Illinois as anything but a stepping-stone to what he felt was a job (NFL or top-level college) he deserved. It was kind of a 50/50 feeling where you admire the rare honesty, while being offended by the slight.
Maybe in retrospect, he realized that he might have been able to have long-term success here, and that we were a good fit. On the other hand, he’s someone who lost HC jobs in both college and the NFL as a result of player mutinies.

Instead we hire the D coordinator for his first D1 head gig so we can get him "on the cheap" & keeping the roster together in the short term. IIRC we didn't even kick the tires on who would be available on a national basis. And we had a pretty solid program to sell at that point. Not sure exact timing, but that was the same offseason that Gary Barnett was hired at Northwestern & resurrected them from the graveyard. Surely a solid top 25ish Illinois program could have attracted a MAC coach or some other mid D1 or FCS coach that had a good track record.

Bill Snyder wanted the job - I hear he was a pretty good coachThe real mistake in that whole scenario was not that Mackovic left, but that we did the whole thing backward. Then to top it off, the AD hire was Ron Guenther who embarked on 2 decades of mediocrity at best on football side.
But that was Illinois football in a nutshell for the bulk of the 90's, 00's & 10's pre Whitman. Never willing to spend top dollar to strive for excellence. Content with occasional goodness & a lot of less than goodness.
That would be exactly the type of guy they could have pulled at that time. IL was a far far better program than what he had at K State. That would change within a few years as he was so good there.Bill Snyder wanted the job - I hear he was a pretty good coach
Jim Turpin wrote in his book that Mackovic was a cold and rude person to work with.As I’ve said on Loyalty before, Mackovic was a real @$$hole who would turn his charm on or off depending on whom he was with and what he wanted from them…He was a smart coach, but not a very nice person. I wasn’t sorry to see him go at all back then…
You happen to have the name of that book? Would love to read it.Jim Turpin wrote in his book that Mackovic was a cold and rude person to work with.
On to of all that, the hire was made by the interim chancellor. The real mistake in that whole scenario was not that Mackovic left, but that we did the whole thing backward. The only organization besides Illinois who could be that incompetent is my favorite NFL team....the BearsOn to of all that, the hire was made by the interim chancellor.
Yeah, this is prime USC. If they don't dominate the teams the fans believe they should dominate (i.e. pretty much everyone) there's a nefarious reason for it. This went from one guy out sick, to half the team but only the defensive half having food poisoning, to Illinois purposely poisoning them with hotel catering. Also the refs stole 7pts and the win from them and the B10 unfairly forced them to play in their Big Noon game of the week making them play at 9am their time.I heard 1 player was sick. They’re embarrassed they lost to Illinois and are making excuses.
I don't know if it is still in print. "Turpin Times"You happen to have the name of that book? Would love to read it.

He wrote it shortly after he retired, circa 2002.
This is actually a sign we are in the end times of “being Illinois”.
5 years ago that doesn’t get noticed and the kick hits the left upright, hits the right upright, pops straight up, falls onto the crossbar, bounces back onto our sideline, bursts open and delivers mono virus to the entire team.
I know…and I find it simultaneously hilarious andYeah, this is prime USC. Basically everyone cheated them and there's a grand conspiracy against them by the B10 who secretly are making them fail since they joined the conference.
For people who aren't familiar with USC, they were basically the Michigan of the Pac10. God help us all if they ever become good again.
I was actually just outside the booth when that photo was taken. It was after the Illinois-Louisville Thanksgiving Day football game in 2001 that clinched the B1G title and a trip to the Sugar Bowl. This was taken by Turpin's family who came up to the booth to surprise him after his last regular season football game. It was a nice moment.
