Illinois 59, Northwestern 56 Postgame

I think they reviewed it and concluded there was no flop on Plummer. He literally didn't even fall lol.

I think Bardo was wrong though, of course you can get a flop warning on offense.

I agree. Flops mostly occur on offense 3-point shots or defensive charge attempts. Occasionally, ball handlers try to sell that they were slapped on a steal attempt. Are there others?

They literally have rules, procedures, and years of experience. And eyes. And brains. I'm assuming.
The phantom foul on plummer was an anticipated call if you didn’t see it don’t call it it’s as easy as that official’s should hold the whistle if they don’t get a good look at the play calling a foul because it might have been is the main problem with officiating

I get that officiating is not an easy job and trying to make the right call in real game time can be difficult. I can live with the 50/50 calls like whether or not Plummer actually fouled the guy going for the layup or Hawkins fouling the guy shooting the 3. The completely inexcusable calls that the officials can control are the calls where Kofi and Trent not getting the continuations when it was more than obvious that were in the act of shooting and the flop call against Podz when he was steamrolled. Those 3 calls alone were absolutely pathetic and there is no excuse for the officials not getting those calls correct.

Yea, if you stop your man from scoring more than you do. If you don't you lose the game. That's how it goes. Stop your opponent from scoring more than you do. His counterparts almost always outscore him. If the rest of the teams counterparts did the same we'd lose every game! Offensively we are playing 4 against 5 when he's on the floor. Defensively he's a beast and he usually does great! But when he's not playing well defensively, and not scoring he's a double liability. I like Damonte but he's a liability offensively and every team knows it. It is what it is! He made some great plays tonight and I'm proud of him and his effort! Glad he's on our team! Just wish he'd be aggressive again offensively like earlier this season!
He shutdown Nance when he was single handedly killing us and gathering 9 rebounds in the process scoring happens in more ways than just shooting the ball if damonte only grabs 4 rebounds that’s 5 more chances for northwestern to score

This would only be true if Damonte stood on the defensive end of the floor for the entire game, waiting for the rest of his team to return from playing offense. Damonte isn't a large scoring threat, but he is still a threat. And he helps the offense flow. This is a team sport, and everyone helps get the ball to the hoop.

At the beginning of the game, everyone was excited to see a couple of refs wouldn't be in Evanston, and it still turned out bad. Thankfully, this crew won't be in Champaign on Wednesday, but I'd bet Bo and DJ are both there. Maybe Wedensday's the night Kofi shoots 20 FT?

Something that drives me crazy....and the Illini got the benefit of this call...can't remember without going back and looking at it again...but one of the Illini players was taking the ball to the basket....clearly got fouled going up for the shot...no whistle until the officials saw that the ball wasn't going in the hole...after the shot missed and both the Illini player shooting the ball and the defender were on the floor and the ball had been rebounded then the whistle blows....I mean a foul is a foul..don't wait to see if the ball goes in the hole or not.....I know the NBA officials do this all the time....listen to Stacy King...he hates it as well.....by not calling it a foul if the ball goes in the hole, is denying the offensive player a chance at a 3 pt play....just a really bad look for the officiating crew imo....rant complete

Am in the only one ECSTATIC about today’s win?
It does 3 huge things:

1. Solidifies an awesome week- beat the 10 ranked team and home and win on the road in the B1G. I suspect we jump up 5-6 spots.
2. Likely a Quad 1 win at the end of the season. NW sits at 76, so any good performance(s) could launch that win into Q1.
3. Secures top spot alone B1G ranking with further opportunity to separate ourselves when Wiscy comes to town.

SO

DANG

GOOD!!!!
4. Our freshmen are pretty good👍

I was at the game. They showed the Podz flop on the video board and the crowd really booed that call. (it looked to me that Podz really got hit hard). They also showed the Hawkins 3 point foul call and it looked like Hawkins hit the shooter's hand well after the shot left the shooter's hand. The atmosphere was great and the crowd went wild after Williams' dunk near the end of the game. I was surprised that Northwestern had as many fans in attendance as they did. I go to Northwestern B1G games and Northwestern fan attendance is usually very poor. Great victory and a fun game to attend.

It's early, I haven't had coffee but, man, I believe you're missing the point here. Last evening earlier in this thread I posted the photo of him stuffing Minnesota's Alihan Demir w/45 ticks remaining when we were up two in Champaign, 53-51. Two years ago today. The game turned on that play, we hit six more free throws and won 59-51.

I will dig it up if needed but as I recall we were +28 that evening w/DMW on the floor and something like -15 with him sitting. His defense is offense.

That's why he plays [EDIT: ~ 30 mins a game, more when we're struggling: 45 v. Purdue and 35 v. MD.] That's why BU sees him as the foundation of the team. That's why we win games like Minnesota two years ago today and NW yesterday.

That's also why, in the postgame locker room video, he's sitting on a stool as BU points out his heroism with a look on his face that says "Y'all gonna miss me when I'm gone."

Because every basketball game is just 5 simultaneous games of 1-on-1.

Loving all the people being critical of Brad’s rotations like we aren’t in first place in the conference half way through the Big Ten schedule. Give me a break. We’re winning!

Yes. One of the many, many things Damonte does extremely well is jumping into position as an outlet when he sees a ball handler getting trapped or in any other type of trouble. He does this super quickly, and it serves to keep the offense moving and prevent a possible turnover.

Agreed! He does a lot of the stuff that gets overlooked! The intangibles!

Yeah!! That's it!! Bring your silly DMFW shade and wrap it in fake "but I like Da'Monte" bs! He effectively won this game with his play on OFFENSE and defense in the last two minutes. There's no "but's" about it.

Do you think they run a single offensive set for DMFW? Even one play with DMFW as the option on offense? When this team is whole.....they have so many legitimate offensive options it is ridiculous. Inside, outside, pick and roll, two man game. DMFW's job isn't to score 10 per game. DMFW's job is to do everything. Literally. Against guys 6" taller than him. And he does that FlexNSeal sh#t better than anyone we've seen in a long time.

So take your bs DMFW shade down the road. I don't care how hard you try and wrap it in "but I like him" and "the young man is a fighter" coded bs.

It's garbage takes. Period. Full stop.

Finally, the freshmen are allowed to play enough for their dynamism on offense to help spark an otherwise stagnant half-court offense lacking player and ball movement without Curbelo present.
I feel better about this win than I did about the MSU win. We hit our ugly streak, but instead of winning because the other team ran out of time, we won because we fought our way out of it (led by the seeming determination of the frosh).
