No idea why they didn’t double Ayo to get ball out of his hands... but I am glad they didn’t.Outrebounded, gave up more steals, blocks, turnovers, and fouls. The difference is Ayo and team defense. Held UM under 40% shooting and under 24% from three, with them jacking a bunch of threes.
I like Juwan Howard, though. I hope he finds success at UM, except against Illinois.
Awesome game, this team has heart!!!!
Some Illini vs. Michigan last times for today:
-Win at Michigan: 2009-10 (Won 51-44 at Crisler in late February in what ended up being the last win during the regular season for that team)
-Sweep Michigan in a season series: 2002-03 (Won at home in late January 67-60 before winning in Ann Arbor in early March 82-79)
-Sweep Michigan and Purdue in the same season: 1990-91 (Beat Purdue at home in early January, won at Michigan in late January, won at Purdue in early February, and beat Michigan at home in late February)
? KenPom site has us losing at Purdue 1/9/2002, 84-75.We actually swept both (4-0 total) in 2002.

Butler uglied there way to back to back title games. I’ll take that all day and twice during March madness! And, ugly at times.
But who cares?
Yes. That was for ARCH!That was for Arch.
Yep. Relied (stupidly) on Wikipedia. Opened the Illinois basketball record book and found my mistake.? KenPom site has us losing at Purdue 1/9/2002, 84-75.

Edit--UIUC Pressbook confirms the KenPom data.
KenPom had us a 4 point underdog, basically the home court advantage.TRank (Torvik), prior to the Michigan game:
View attachment 5541. We wnt from +4.1 (pre PU) to +3.4 (post PU, pre MI).
We nearly met their Offense prediction.
And, BEAT their Defense prediction.
What did KenPom have to say about this game?
Pretty tough to defend any better than Simpson did. Ayo just too tough. No idea why they didn’t double Ayo to get ball out of his hands... but I am glad they didn’t.
