Yeah..this year was tough. They really needed TSJ and Mayer to have a chance at making a run.

Next years team is better positioned to roll with the guys we already have although I’m not sure who the Alpha would be
I am expecting Goode to lead...or hope he does. Rogers also if he can hit free throws...and he has the most sound fundamentals of the three struggling frosh. Never know who will transfer but if I were BU, I would certainly look for a strong leader.

Well I did. There is a leader taking a squad into an arena to defeat another squad.
Sports are battle, there are flags and allegiances, sports are battle.
Having led young men in battle and on the field of athletic competition, there is not a huge difference. You need to find a way to communicate, motivate, and support them to gain their respect and the respect of your teammates. It is not easy but necessary to be successful in both.

How some of you act surprised when Underwood is an in-your-face coach is amazing. He's done this at every stop he's been and with a degree of success.

The key is there's a purpose to his yelling. He doesn't do it because he's a jerk face drill sergeant. He does it to get the absolute best out of his team.

I sure didn't hear Ayo, Trent, Kofi or Damonte complaining about being yelled at too much. Welcome to big boy basketball.
That's a reasonable take. Ultimately if he goes too far, Whitman will step in I'm sure.

In the end, we all know hot headed coaches who are great successes. Winning covers alot of concerns. Bob Knight may be the ultimate example of hot head and winning coach.

Biggest concern I have is this was the week for player meetings (finals...less practice, more meetings). A little concerned that we spent a week with player meetings and apparently BUs words didn't get through or connect with some key players.

I personally don't have a problem with how Brad coaches. I graduated in 1980, every other football and basketball coach I had through school was like Daddy Brad. It sure as hell kept me motivated. I did everything I could to keep from being the reason why they went off.
Um….you do realize that was close to a half century ago don’t you?
Times have changed my man.
My father beat the piss out of me when I needed a whipping’. That was in the 70’s.
I turned out ok….but that doesn’t make it right or make it the way it should be or that it needs to be.
This antiquated mentality that coaches should be able to say, do, or treat individuals however they want because they are coaches is insane.
The world is changing and this 60 year old gets it.
There’s a time for tough love….for tough coaching….but to automatically dismiss the fact that this younger generation doesn’t need to be treated differently than my generation is simply ignorant.

Man, everyone harping on Underwood is crazy to me. These are grown men on his team and can I also add what no one is saying, grown men getting paid. For every Mark Smith and Kipper Nichols of the world who didn't respond to his coaching well there is a Da'monte Williams and Trent Frazier who did and thrived.

Underwood yells and he always has except when his team had on court leaders like the past couple of years. His intensity shouldn't surprise anyone especially the guys on the team who knew the kind of coach he was before committing. The guy isn't perfect, but I'll take his history of being a great coach and leader over any player no matter how good they are.

Those things go hand in hand….do ever look and see when he’s taking to the kids on the bench? Coaching them up? Do we forget the post game celebrations? Y’all are way more worried about it than the kids are. Also a lot of you would fold in major athletics.
I woke today to realize its effects have now infiltrated the Illinois Loyalty threads. Guess I need to figure out this feature to only follow those who speak sense and ignore the rest. Carry on Tim or Tyler at least you know what you are talking about.. Others hmmmm not so much.

FYi I was sitting within ear shot of Brad yesterday and never saw him berate an assistant only players who needed it for lack of hustle or not playing as instructed!

I have two thoughts I want to share which hopefully will come across as neutral amongst all the strong opinions in this thread.

First is that it's extremely hard for anyone outside of the program to actually assess the team relationships and dynamics. The team is so close by the time and effort they spend together, and we only see a sliver of it. I give 0 credence to body language analysis or attempts to speculate on the team's reactions, supposed inferences, hidden subtext, etc...

Second, every single good basketball team is going to need to navigate uncertainty and challenges. The real teams can do it. Teams that can't will fall to the wayside. There's no template and it's not pretty. My point is, strife is necessary and we should acknowledge and accept that some ugliness will come with it.
Definitely agree on the body language thing. People on here have been commenting on Hawkins’ body language just about since day 1 to the point that I think there has been speculation after each season that he would transfer. He’s still here. Maybe Brad has just done a great sales job each off season or maybe body language analysis isn’t all people think it is.

Have a different impression and believe MM is showing real leadership. He is standing up for the team after his coach publicly criticized them and berated them. Coach also has to accept criticism in order to work it out. Can’t all be a one way street and don’t believe it was with Trent.

The one you missed is the one that is concerning:
Dwill as a freshman A/TO 2.5:1
Skyy through 11 games A/TO .92:1
I think that’s where the “be patient” part comes in. This team 8-3. They will get better. Their souls are being tested in the fire…

Those things do not have to go hand in hand, and if you don’t understand that, you’re missing what leadership is all about. I’m a BU fan, but his inability to adjust the rage is a huge leadership failure IMO.

When players are telling other players to just “tone it out” it’s fair to say those antics are causing the message to be missed. We’ve seen BU teams fall apart down the stretch a lot (not just Illinois, it’s a staple of his teams his whole career/stats and records don’t lie). BU led teams end up being soft in the NCAA tournament, why is that?

I’ll share why I wouldn’t fold in major athletics if you are willing to share proof why you wouldn’t.

Some point of reference. Believe this team is better than the 2018-19 team that was Ayo's sophomore year. That team loss to a bad/average Miami and Missouri team. Believe team is hitting a funk during finals/holidays. The team is loaded, beating Texas and UCLA was no fluke. But we will be an easy out if free throws and consistency doesn't improve.

Pretty much everyone thought BU's Goode as starter comment was coachspeak. Maybe it was true and some of these issues are why he was going that direction. Let's hope getting him on the court helps.

Leadership

“The discipline which makes the soldiers of a free country reliable in battle is not to be gained by harsh or tyrannical treatment. On the contrary, such treatment is far more likely to destroy than to make an army. It is possible to impart instruction and give commands in such a manner and such a tone of voice as to inspire in the soldier no feeling but an intense desire to obey, while the opposite manner and tone of voice cannot fail to excite strong resentment and a desire to disobey. The one mode or other of dealing with subordinates springs from a corresponding spirit in the breast of the commander. He who feels the respect which is due to others, cannot fail to inspire in them respect for himself, while he who feels, and hence manifests disrespect towards others, especially his subordinates, cannot fail to inspire hatred against himself.”

Lieutenant General John M. Schofield, USA (from his graduation address to the West Point class of 1879)
