Illinois 68, Northwestern 61 POSTGAME

Groce finally gets a clue and lets Tejon play without ripping him out every 2 mins to put Tate in. And we finally win a game.

33 mins for TJL....that has to be a season high.
36 mins for MM...that has to be a season high.

The other 4 mins at the 5 and the 40 mins at the 4 goto Finke 22, Kipper 16 mins, Black 15 mins.

Certainly can't say Gross didn't try something new...or if it will work again?

Things were never the same after he blasted his own players after losing to Purdue

The day after that game, I was searching online for that press conference to watch. That is when I stumbled upon Illinois Loyalty. I became a member and have been following this board ever since

Te'jon played 33 minutes today. I'm pretty confident had he played 30+ minutes per game all season we would not currently have a 200 page coaching carousel thread.

Excellent defensive effort tonight. Looked like they cared and their effort was rewarded. Nice win. Why call a time out with 10 seconds left to let the Cats try to set something up, and then to see Dustin Ford talking to the team in that time out? Thought maybe the coaching staff was trying to throw away a great effort by the boys.

Defense faltered down the stretch. Luckily NW missed a lot of open 3's.

three years ago people were ridiculed when they suggested Mav could be a solid B1G center. He's come a long way.

Groce revival? It's one game, against Northwestern, and they were missing their best player. There's a looong way to go to get to anything resembling a "revival".

Lindsey is a good player, but unless your a prisoner of PPG he isn't their best player IMO. He is an important player for them.
Jok is by far Iowa's best player, but with him out, Iowa actually played a couple of their best games of the year. Bottom line is you play who is out there.

What do you mean? The recruiting class is great if Groce stays

Groce's departure is a matter of what day after March 4 right now, not an 'if', so what S&C is getting at is that the longer recruits think there is a chance he stays, or the closer to the bubble he gets, the less likely it is the recruits stick through the change.

But it's not Tate bashing, it's Groce bashing. People don't have a problem with Tate. He is what he is, and everyone understands that. The boneheaded coaching decision to play him at the detriment of Lucas's development and the team's success is the problem. Tonight, the right decision was finally made.
Exactly, and if it extrapolates to Jalon what fans think of his ability well, sorry, but this is big time basketball and not charity. I don't think anybody faults Tate's desire or effort just skill hence the serious frustration with a coach that cannot see what is painfully obvious to virtually every Illini fan for quite some time.

Te'Jon's been really good, but he's also not been season saving good, IMO. Today's win doesn't really absolve any of our basketball sins, but I will say I'm glad to see the guys went out there and played well in a competitive game and came home with a W. That's awesome for the players, they've worked hard for it. But just like the Iowa win, this isn't indicative of any change until we can string a few together.

Nice....!!!

I hope most of everyone listened to the announcers....Illinois is a good team...I had the pleasure of watching the Former Illini coaches Basketball Classic in Kansas last night (on TV) .....Weber held in there and lost by a small bit to Self....I will be the lone fan of Give Groce a break over the frustration of a team that has talent...but not had it together...and he has a good recruiting class entering.. he does have energy and obviously he is too loyal to Seniors. Gotta love loyalty....but it has its place. Penn St beat Maryland...it is a weird year..I am gonna bet Whitman is patient and this board is as effective as the famous march....lets let it ride...It is very hard to start over....

I am now ready to be landblasted!!! Have fun!!

Incorrect. Northwestern is a good story and quite frankly, they are not a true rival of Illinois and have never been. Our true rival is Indiana. Northwestern is the little brother and sometimes, you need to let the little brother have his day. Your apparent hatred for the basketball team is pretty petty.

And the sad thing is Indiana looks at us as "not a true rival" and they stick their nose up to us and constantly tell us how we have "no history."

Exactly why Indiana is our true rival. IU can keep losing. I've been watching Illinois basketball for 17 years now and nothing compared to the Illinois-Indiana rivalry during the Kelvin Sampson/Eric Gordon debacle. Some people will point to Iowa in the late 80s/early 90s and Michigan in the late 80s, but I didn't grow up in that era. I grew up in the era where Illinois' main rivals have been Wisconsin and Indiana.

I personally agree with the Indiana part. I've been watching for 25 years, since the late 80s. It's always sweet to see Indiana lose, every time. I find NW annoying more than anything. They want to be relevant sooo badly. Our other true rival in my mind is Iowa. If we beat both Iowa and Indiana in a single season, I generally feel good about the season.

Hasn't he, in fact, been pretty rough in the three losses between now and Iowa?

I love Tejon but let's be real here.

In the now 5 games he's played 25+ minutes:

v Iowa: 27 min, 1/4 FG, 1/1 3P, 3/4 FT, 6 pts, 6 ast, 2 reb, 2 stl, 2 to
@ Penn St: 25 min, 2/8 FG, 0/3 3P, 0/0 FT, 4 pts, 3 ast, 2 reb, 3 stl, 1 to
v Wisco: 26 min, 0/4 FG, 0/0 3P, 0/0 FT, 0 pts, 1 ast, 4 reb, 2 stl, 2 to
v Minn: 27 min, 1/5 FG, 1/3 3P, 0/0 FT, 3 pts, 4 ast, 1 reb, 0 stl, 0 to
@ NU: 33 min, 4/9 FG, 1/2 3P, 2/3 FT, 11 pts, 6 ast, 5 reb, 1 stl, 2 to

By far his best game of the season tonight, but he hasn't had many other performances that really indicate he would've changed the trajectory of our season with more minutes.

That said, he seemed to come out aggressive tonight, so getting him involved SHOOTING early was excellent.

This game felt really different than every other game this year. I told my girlfriend that it almost looked like a Lou coached team. You could see the guys getting coached up throughout the game. They made a few mistakes but then went back to the gameplan and didn't try to compensate by playing hero ball. It started with Lucas, Maverick and Malcolm.

It was a pleasure to watch that.
