Illinois 73, Iowa 61 Postgame

I could be wrong, but I just don’t see how wins over Iowa and Nebraska (best case) vault us to a 3 seed.
Simple:
We have to win (excellent chance compared to other side of brackets) all the way up to the championship game (which oddly doesn't actually count towards a seed)

and other teams currently projected as a 3 seed have to lose.

If we lose early we're a 4 seed, that's it.

Yup. We have some chances for some neutral court Q1 wins. A couple of the teams ahead of us could lose early in conference tourney. We have a path just have to win until Purdue

I think Domask is our best inbounder but also our best free throw shooter. It puts us in a bit of a conundrum.
He is also not exactly the quickest decision maker.

Think Coleman might be the best bet but then you lose his size which can be a good outlet. Also, trust Ty but he will likely not be on the floor a ton due to free throw shooting.

Almost wonder if Nico could get some play as an offense/defense switch with Ty in situations where they're going to foul late.

Considering Ty shoots only 4% worse than Nico at the line, and he's shown himself to be trustworthy throwing in the ball, and gives you so much more additionally in defense and getting critical rebounds, the answer is pretty obvious. Just play Ty. No need to get cute, play your best player who's currently 6th on the team in free throw percentage and trust him to do what you already trust him to do in the first 30minutes of a game.

And by the way for the Ty shouldn't be on the floor to close out a game people, funny how the games he's been allowed to close out in the Illini have either held or extended their leads, and the ones he hasn't we've been minus on the floor and struggled in most aspects of the game. At some point, you just have to let your best players play to close out the game and trust in the team and lineup you built. Ty is one of those players. Let him cook.

Unfortunately, Ohio St/Iowa will both likely be Q2. Neutral court Q1 is NET top 50. Ohio St is currently 60 and Iowa is currently 58.

In the next round, Nebraska would be Q1 (NET 40), but Indiana/Penn St would be Q2.

And the final game against Purdue wouldn’t count towards seeding.

Not sure if one more Q1 win (best case) is enough to propel us to a 3 seed without some serious help.

Great win- nice to see the effort- if we keep up that intensity, we can win some games here

On the downside Harmon looks completely lost right now, offensively and defensively, we need to get him going for the tournament. Nicco really shouldn’t be playing. I’d rather see DGL get the minutes at this point over Nicco

Total lack of knowledge on my part.......can they (Iowa) still get lucky and move up 8 spots just by teams ahead of them losing or playing poorly ? Or is the NET pretty much set going into conference tournaments ?

I'm not going that far. He's cold offensively but he's still engaged in the game. Completely lost to me is just not doing anything right.

Need to closeout stronger. Kept Iowa in the game where we should've destroyed them.

Perkins missing that dunk was huge. He makes that, place goes wild.

Iowa gets it down to 5 point lead, Domask with huge bucket.

Dainja with great minutes. We will need him.

Nico provided solid minutes. Had a solid defensive stop, but then turned around and sucked.

I still want to see DGL get some time. He can bring energy that can alter the game. Just a minute or two. Nothing too much.

We held a top 10 offense to 61 points on 35% shooting on senior night in a game they desperately needed. This more than just a win

I thought that was Underwood's best coached game of the season. Loved seeing them control the clock in the second half and I thought it completely took Iowa out of their game. The one time a Bruce Weber style milk-the-clock-early strategy didn't drive me nuts. Seeing the help defense be effective was amazing -- Dain was fantastic disrupting everything in the paint even before his scoring spurt. Also nice to see us break the press and mostly perform on inbounds plays. Bardo tried to jinx Illinois early by saying that the Illini don't let up after getting a big lead.. has he watched Illinois in the past 2 months?

🚨🚨🚨Potential First Time Accomplishment for the 2023-24 Illini.🚨🚨🚨

Illinois lead from wire-to-wire yesterday vs the Hawkeyes at Carver-Hawkeye Arena. It may very well be the first time ever an Illini team has accomplished that feat since the building opened in in 1983.

The only game I don't have data about is Illinois' 76-64 win in in 1998 at CHA. I can't find any game details about that. (Interestingly enough, I was a that game and rememeber Illinois leading most of the way, but I can't remember if the Illini ever trailed or if the game was ever tied beyond 0-0.)

In 2004, Illinois lead 2-0 then Iowa tied it at 2-2. Illinois then went ahead 5-2 and never trailed. But because of the 2-2 tie, they did not lead wire-to-wire.

Other games at CHA Illinois either lost or did not lead wire-to-wire in their victories.

Illinois has won 14 times at CHA: 1984, 1991, 1995, 1998, 2000, 2004, 2005, 2008, 2010, 2011, 2014, 2017, 2022 and 2024.

If anyone can find the details about the 1998 game, we'll know if the 2024 Illini have accomplished another first.

Coach of the Year doesn't often go to the best, but to the coach whose team improves the most from the prior year.
Yeah, I agree. That’s often true.
But to me that’s all the more reason he should have won it. Didn’t we go from wing like 12 to 21 or something crazy like that??

Brad inherited a colosssal mess…
There’s no comparison really.
Gard took over for Ryan.
Coward took over for Beilein.
Holtman took over for Matta.
Throw in luminaries: Izzo & Painter.

All representing schools that were MUCH better off than us… WAY better
Also, they’re some of the best coaches in the Bigten/nationally like probably ever. Brad was better than all of them. The whole thing is BS.

You could maybe make a case for Collins a couple years because Northwestern…but I mean come on. When you lay out like this it’s completely bogus.

Barttorvik likes our Defense a lot as of the end of February. 3 game stretch. I think we’ll see Iowa again then Indiana/Nebraska rematches both have concerns. We never saw Ware but Terrance was a shell of himself then

"Down 38-32 at the half, Iowa fought back to a 44-44 tie before Heldman hit a three..."

I saw 2 games yesterday. The first 10-12 minutes I saw the ceiling for this team. They were hitting on every single phase of the game, shooting, fast breaks, rebounding and great defense. That's the way Houston plays, but they play that way for 40 minutes. Then they just seemed to stop what they were doing, coach subbed players in and out to rest them. It was a different type team playing more deliberate power ball. In the 2nd half there was a more concerted effort to get the ball inside, the defense got a little shaky at times as Iowa hit some big 3's but overall the Illini sucked it up and pulled away down the stretch although the free throw shooting wasn't very good. Dain was good today, Marcus was off a little on offense but TJS was brilliant, Hawkins and Quincy were beast on the boards and defensively.
I think the Illini will play OSU on Friday. This team is playing good ball since we saw them in Columbus. The Illini will have to be on their game.

Haven’t seen DGL for a while and assume that is significant.

More importantly Dain is playing some Defense. That is a piece needed in the tournament.
