how does this team win at iowa? also don’t see how this is a second weekend team but it’s still relatively early
Not to just single out this one post (since there are plenty) — but do we seriously feel the need to jump to these conclusions/statements for each and every minute thing for the next 3 months? Especially after a BIG road win… a game that was LITERALLY never closer than a 8pt game in the second half? With our star player basically taken out the game?

Remind you our elite 8 team just two years ago lost to these guys.

Wins, losses, and anything in between — some people will simply never be content.

Wow a 2 point drop in ORtg? That’s substantial! 73 minutes! That’s an awfully large and statically relevant sample size, he’s clearly a worse player than last year and frankly it’s our responsibility as a fan board to start calling him out for this
Actually it's the coaches job to show Tomi's !!! to the meet bench. Maybe in practice he hasn't been this bad but sometimes Brad rides some harder than others about performance. Clearly Tomi has a much longer leash than some others I wish played a little more. Hopefully BU can figure out what's going on in Tomis head but is the fan base telling him he sucks really going to help.him improve? Maybe it will but I doubt it.

My complaint against Tomi tonight is not really about his offense. He was pretty soft on a couple of post-ups but I do agree that their defensive scheme made it tough on him. Although he did seem pretty flustered on most of his offensive touches. I was talking more about his defense and rebounding effort which was undeniably bad. If that was Ben, everybody would be crucifying that dude.

Great point - people were melting down after our melt down with that 2024 team. Making statements about whether a team will get to the elite 8 off 20 games let alone 1 game is foolish. Make the tournament with a solid seed and see what happens. We went on an incredible run after losing at rec hall.

Now if things don’t change with Tomi, our good seed good be at risk making it harder.

They didn’t pass the eye test after the performances they’ve put up against Tennessee, Texas Tech, and Mizzou?

Tonight was certainly disappointing, but come on this team is extremely talented and can light it up. Tonight’s performance doesn’t change that. Folks need to quit being so hyperbolic.
It is a great point. They did look great in those wins.

I guess, for me and I'm betting for many others, can you see this team putting together 6 straight games like those? It is concerning, as we've seen in many other seasons, the up and down effort/execution. I will continue to pull for them to put it all together for a magical run, but every performance like tonight's second half just plant another seed of doubt. It's early, so there is still hope.

Refs were awful -- what was a foul in this game? Nobody knows and the refs don't either. This kind of officiating makes Big Ten ball an almost unwatchable product.

Penn State worked awfully hard to get 65 points. PSU takes way too long to generate a shot on offense to stage a comeback.

The foul trouble sucked but it was nice to give some playing time to other players and know we can get a win without Wagler.

In years past we’d have lost this, controlled the game from the tip. We’re not there yet, but a solid road win.

Firstly, none of us are getting paid 100,000+ dollars plus a free ride at the U of I plus room and board for playing basketball. Like it or not, choosing the path of Power 5 conference NCAA basketball player comes with more public scrutiny than your average job. When you're an NCAA assistant coach, and you're making hundreds of thousands of dollars, that also comes with more public pressures that most of our work places aren't associated with. With the rewards comes public pressure.

Secondly, the idea you're suggesting that we need to be Fortune 500 CEOs or chair of the board before we're morally permitted to critique the NCAA basketball team that we're fans of is flat out comical. Get out of here with that nonsense.

Thirdly, if you read people's criticisms, they aren't just of this one game. They are of negative patterns that have repeated themselves. For example, our coaches' ineptitude at implementing effective out of bounds plays since Coach Gentry left. Also, our team's ineffectiveness at offensive fundamentals like setting and utilizing screens.
Didn’t say don’t criticize
Just that in all walks of life damn near no one is crushing it 24:7

Their job is to win, and I’m happy they did.

The win is the most important thing. On the road. Never really in doubt. When the Illini shot well under their season average. Playing half the game without the primary engine of the offense. More than an off night for the offense, I was concerned about getting beat to a bunch of 50/50 balls and not being as dominant on the boards.
Got good open looks most of the night as Penn State was intent on taking the driving lanes away. The shots just didn’t go in. Not sure I’d fiddle much with an offense that rates as one of the most efficient in the country despite playing a rugged non-conference schedule.

Yea did they not watch the game against Missouri? Or Tennesse? Or Texas Tech? Is a somewhat lackluster performance in a single game a reason to question the future of the team? We have a lot of evidence that says they can be pretty freaking good.

penn state was significantly better 2 years ago, finishing just under .500 in the big ten at 9-11.

if you’re satisfied with how the team has looked for a fair amount of this season, i’m envious.

i want them to do well, specifically in march. no one nationally cares if you had a nice conference season then crash out in the round of 32. that’s been brad’s m.o., and i am unimpressed.

A B1G road win where we didn’t play our best. And Loyalty posters continue to exhibit their gross ignorance and stupidity in the post game threads. I’ve stayed out of the Game Threads other than pre-game quick views for this exact reason. Guess I’ll avoid the postgame threads also.

Am I crazy or has that not been happening all year to players not putting in effort? I’ve watched Stoj, Tomi, Mirk, Boz, etc go sit the bench when they miss effort plays this year.

Tomi is the same player he has been since last year, this year we have the luxury of benching him if he’s not playing at peak. To me it seems like any ideas that he “has something going on in his head” is fan fic.

I’m not trying to say there should be no criticism I’m saying it’s useless and frustrating when it’s thinly veiled and over assuming

Mizzou is terrible
Tenn isn’t good either.
And Texas Tech was a homer job.

Illinois is the only team in KenPom top 11 that has 3 losses. Every other team is 0 or 1. So I don’t see this team as at the level Kenpom has them at

Any win over psu is great..............
Any win with highknees-low skills ref jeff is great..........
Any win with Paul Selzc reffing is great................
Any win with Waglar limited to half a game by fouls is great.......
Any conference road win is great........

Illini record :

season 11-3
B$G 2-1

Big Z the blocking machine........his arm length is freaky...............Tomi needs to shave that funky beard off.....he hasn't played good since he started being hairy.......Mirko-man with a double-double........

Flush this crappy game and prepare for rutgers...............I have no idea what kind of team they have , but I do kinow they have an overrated coach who does less with more talent than any coach in the NCAA.......

Interesting take that the stats platform that has been accurately predicting NCAA season outcomes since 1997, doesn’t consider W-L and purely focuses on archived data is wrong about our team.

Also FWIW mizzou is beating Florida by 3 points with 6 minutes left right now.

Edit: sorry for being so combative but won’t stand for kenpom slander haha

I think there us something to that when some players don't have the ball as often they play worse. Tomi has the ball much less this year with the passing ability if wagler and Mirk and it seems this may have an effect on his play. Something sure is having and effect.
