The E8 team lost to an 80ish PSU team in meltdown fashion and beat a worse KP team (oakland) by about the same amount......but at home. uninspiring games are to happen as these are young men.

I'm sure everyone in this thread absolutely crushes it at work every single minute of every day though
Firstly, none of us are getting paid 100,000+ dollars plus a free ride at the U of I plus room and board for playing basketball. Like it or not, choosing the path of Power 5 conference NCAA basketball player comes with more public scrutiny than your average job. When you're an NCAA assistant coach, and you're making hundreds of thousands of dollars, that also comes with more public pressures that most of our work places aren't associated with. With the rewards comes public pressure.

Secondly, the idea you're suggesting that we need to be Fortune 500 CEOs or chair of the board before we're morally permitted to critique the NCAA basketball team that we're fans of is flat out comical. Get out of here with that nonsense.

Thirdly, if you read people's criticisms, they aren't just of this one game. They are of negative patterns that have repeated themselves. For example, our coaches' ineptitude at implementing effective out of bounds plays since Coach Gentry left. Also, our team's ineffectiveness at offensive fundamentals like setting and utilizing screens.

Any win over psu is great..............
Any win with highknees-low skills ref jeff is great..........
Any win with Paul Selzc reffing is great................
Any win with Waglar limited to half a game by fouls is great.......
Any conference road win is great........

Illini record :

season 11-3
B$G 2-1

Big Z the blocking machine........his arm length is freaky...............Tomi needs to shave that funky beard off.....he hasn't played good since he started being hairy.......Mirko-man with a double-double........

Flush this crappy game and prepare for rutgers...............I have no idea what kind of team they have , but I do kinow they have an overrated coach who does less with more talent than any coach in the NCAA.......

Lol....you can't say anything basketball related about a player without someone turning it into an "attack", "hate", or reminding us all how wonderful a person they are.
Fully disagree I haven’t seen many full context basketball related takes that are logical and pragmatic, I feel like most these comments are thinly veiled at best.

The thing that is great about this year’s roster is that Tomi doesn’t have to be a work horse against a team like penn state in the middle of a bad performance like last year, if he’s having a bad game we have Z and Mirk to make up for deficiencies. Idk if we’ve forgotten but last year if Tomi was having a bad game, we were toast because MJJ couldn’t make up for it.

I think a lot of Tomi’s “poor performances” this year are results of he was injured early, probably still coming up to speed with conditioning and we have the luxury of pulling him if it’s a bad matchup for him or if he’s having a bad game.

Idk maybe I’m wrong maybe the more logical explanation is that one of the hardest working guys from last year has decided to get complacent and lazy this year once he’s made some NIL money, nevermind the potential NBA money, screw it easy street now it’s time to recline the chair and coast from here.

Nothing is going to change … More 3s …
I think one thing has changed. We have a very good rim protector in Big Z and I hope he gets more tick and another year here.
I also just wish Mihailo would gotten a bit more tick in pre-conference games. I know he is adjusting and has ability to do much better. Just hasn't had much opportunity. I hope he just gets a little more opportunity when he can so he can help when needed. He did ok tonight and I hope he gets a few chances here and there.

Had 3 starters on the bench with 2 fouls in the 1H, with 1 of them picking up a 4th shortly into the 2H

Few thoughts on Tomi since he had a rough game:

They opted to blitz/double him every time he touched it. When that happens and the other team wants to take a guy away, you have to adjust and (thankfully) we are in an advantageous position as we can just bring in Z and have Mirk be the screener/hub.

Tomi is averaging 10.5 and 5 on the season coming in and that’s with him having a handful of games on minute restriction. He just doesn’t need to be the guy this year with the emergence of Mirk and Z. Tomi’s FG% is up this year, his 3% is up, he is just no longer the lone hub/screener on offense.

We underperformed overall, but the foul trouble greatly contributed to that. You won’t beat the spread every night, so anytime a game kind of goes sideways like this, it’s good to be able to push through it and slog out a B1G road win.

This isn’t just calling you out … It’s calling out this whole attitude in general …

These dudes are making 7 figures plus … These aren’t kids … These are professionals who are paid to do a job …

And it’s not just an organization paying these guys … It’s your friend, your neighbor, your co worker … People who work hard and decide to take that hard earned money and give it to the program to field a better team …

If the guys receiving that money aren’t playing to the standard … Deserves to be called out …

And I don’t understand why everyone is so against people doing it … Back when it was the back door payments, sure we can play pretend that these guys aren’t getting anything and are still kids … Not the case anymore …
Anyone on this board who tells you easy, they can take a hike. You said it perfectly. Time to MAN up - Tomi sucked tonight plain and simple. If people can’t get past that these are semi professional athletes and cry when you call someone out, too bad for them.

The looney toons are really out tonight is it a full moon or something? The Tomi takes are nuts set the torches and pitchforks down and take a lap
Dude has 10 points in 73 minutes of conference play. Torvik advanced stats show that he is down in most categories from last year. Season is halfway through - when are we allowed to call what we see?

Wow a 2 point drop in ORtg? That’s substantial! 73 minutes! That’s an awfully large and statically relevant sample size, he’s clearly a worse player than last year and frankly it’s our responsibility as a fan board to start calling him out for this

Not a good performance. I still don’t know how Illinois is ranked so high on KenPom. They don’t pass the eye test with me
They didn’t pass the eye test after the performances they’ve put up against Tennessee, Texas Tech, and Mizzou?

Tonight was certainly disappointing, but come on this team is extremely talented and can light it up. Tonight’s performance doesn’t change that. Folks need to quit being so hyperbolic.

It’s not just kenpom it’s all the metrics. Illinois has destroyed most opponents that they should - they’ve covered the spread well.

In addition, they have massive wins against Texas tech (who beat Duke)and Tenn and another Q1 win at Ohio state. Losing to Alabama, Nebraska, and UCONN didn’t penalize them at all. They are 10th in NET and Torvik. Basically all the metrics agree they are top 10-15. Now, if our star center plays like this, they would be lucky to be top 50. But the reality is, this resume is very solid and is reflected in all of the metrics.

Serious question: why does the B1G Network employ LaPhonso Ellis? Aren’t there enough ex B1G players to chose from? His non stop, passive aggressive anti Illinois bias is just tiresome. Just go the F away already. I’m sure the ACC network, or wherever the heck a ND ex hooper would call home, could use an analyst. Thanks for telling me non stop how impressed you were by Mingo, while his team is losing by double digits and Illini have 2 freshmen with more points than him until his garbage time heater
