Illinois 75, BYU 73 POSTGAME

we won 3-5. Avoid a meltdown against a Mizzou team that lost to EIU today and we've got us a pretty good non-con. Only one bad loss, every team has one it seems

I think the biggest thing is no one would have really guessed UI would play FSU without beating WVU. Getting both of the "good" teams without getting a win in round 1 is rough. If you drop one of those it looks even better at 3-1. Yes the Winthrop game will never really help but doubtful that it will be a back breaker at the end of the day.

I know it's not going to be a popular opinion, but Malcolm has not played that well this year. He disappears too much against stronger competition and hangs 30+ on the bums. He is way too timid, and doesn't seem to be the strong senior leader the team needs.

Despite a less advanced skillset, I think TA needs the ball in his hands at the end of games because he can make more things happen passing rather than the iso ball that we devolve into when Malcolm has the ball at the end of the games. TA is better at getting others involved and now has a decent enough shot now that you have to at least pay attention to him.

He wasn't very timid on that offensive rebound.

Mika was best player on the court. I think he'd go for 30+ if we played again. And we actually employed a fairly good defensive strategy on him, doubling down when he caught the ball in the paint (knowing Mav/Thorne cannot stop him on their own).

Our RPI was around 77 after beating CMU. It's now 46. Typically you need to be in the low 40s or better. Pomeroy hasn't updated yet, probably won't change much since he projected a 1 point win for us.

thats a huge jump. I think that speaks volumes to who we just beat. This was a big one to win for us.

I know I'm old school, but I don't like Malcolm in his new body. I like the more youthful sleek and slender Malcolm. I think he was quicker and smoother back then. Regardless, I don't think he'll be playing in the NBA....beefed up, or not.

Didn't realize Mav had a double double! That and Finke shooting was great to see!

Malcolm needs to let the game come to him. Take open jumpers in rhythm, get to the high post and hit a step back, post up smaller 3s. When he tries to create he's getting exposed. He doesn't seem to have the handles, and often over dribbles, losing the ball. He could still score 18 points a game sticking to his bread and butter. There's enough other weapons on this team to spread the floor so he's not getting constantly doubled and can get those shots (at least when tate's not in)

I think most experts and close followers of ILLINI basketball would have guessed a non-conference record of somewhere in the range of 12-1 to 10-3, with the latter being the minimal acceptable record. Anything less = a big disappointment with all the talent and experience on the roster.

We're in the "acceptable range" heading to St. Louis.

I must admit when Tate checked in the game late, I was thinking "uh oh" but that little baseline jumper with time expiring was absolutely huge! Kudos to JT.

Also Mika is freaking Drago from Rocky IV. Am I right?

Yeah. Never said he wasn't capable of making good plays. I have unreasonable expectations of him playing well for more than a few plays a game.

I want to see him take over a game against a GOOD team. The only decent team where he put over 20 was NC State (debateable how GOOD they are). Even when we aren't playing good teams, such as Winthrop, when we NEED him, he seems to shrink in the moment. He's capable of bigger things, but as a 4 year player and a senior, he should be the unquestioned leader and go to guy. Right now he seems that he is that only by default.

No Malcolm isn't an NBA player, but he can make a decent living playing BBall if he wants. He's seems like a pretty bright kid & will be successful in whatever he chooses for a vocation.

I thought we looked pretty good with abrams, hill, dj, finke, and thorne. Dj kept probing the baseline, got one basket. We just seemed a little bit more well rounded. Add Black minus Finke and we are better on degense and boards

I thought Tate played a nice game. He had one bad turnover, but turnovers happen, its just a matter of limiting them.

Another solid win, byu will win some games this year. I don't know if they'll end up in the bubble, but it's always nice to win sine against that caliber of team. Take care of Missouri and we are in an acceptable position going into conference play. Better spot than I dared to hope we'd be in after the 3 losses.
