IL was cruising until they not only stalled the offense but turned it over

First 30 minutes- 4 turnovers.
Last 10 minutes- 8 turnovers

Seemed like once Iowa figured out Illimois was overplaying the 3, they got some really easy back cuts and flat out giveaway 2s. It’s one thing to not want to give up 3s when you have a lead, but you also can’t give up uncontested dunks.

I assume Iowa loses their next 2 so that’d be 4 losses in a row. Don’t think by the end of the year this win will be Quad 1

I don't think you have any idea how catastrophic of a drop that would be in the NET. Not happening.

Nine point lead with 7:25 left, we proceeded to allow 4! dunks, a layup, 4 Ft's, and a jumper. All while Z was on the bench. Those were the only 4 dunks in the game for Iowa.

My question is, what is the thinking there? Ben plays pretty good D, but he can't jump. Z is an elite rim protector. What am I missing.

I'll take the negative side here for once because I just don't get the logic with these lineups sometimes. Why did Z sit for so long? He came back in that last minute, Iowa never scored, he blocked a three, caused two missed layups just by his mere presence.

That entire time he was out we had absolutely zero rim protection. They got layup after layup after layup. Tomi and Ben just don't provide the same rim presence.

Tomi especially looks sooo slow for whatever reason.

If it's a big on big postup, and it's standstill I like Tomi's rim protection more. If it's anything with momentum, its Z. In a frantic finish, I agree here.

So you think they fall out of the top 75? LOL.

Aren't you the same guy who had these posts after Penn State?

Iowa would have to fall from 19 to 76 or worse to not be quad 1. I think it would take a huge meltdown for that to happen.

Good point. Last year 16/18 Big 10 teams finished in the top 75 so yeah guess it’s doubtful Iowa is that bad. I was thinking they needed to stay top 50.

A gigantic meltdown indeed. They're currently +23pts per 100possessions thru 16 games. Historically they'd need to fall to about +11pts per 100 possessions and they only have 15+BTT games to do it in. So they'd roughly need to go -1pt/100 possessions, scaled for Big 10 opponent quality the rest of the way. And just to hammer it in, Iowa is currently projected to go 9-6 in B10 play as the projected 21 ranked team in NET after today. So what would performing 24pts per 100 possessions worse than that even look like for them? I mean it's not impossible, but they'd probably need to go something like 4-11 or 3-12 the rest of the way with some bad losses. Would be a crazy freefall.

Huge road win to keep momentum going! Illini came out with real fire today, but in the end, super grateful that college only plays 40 minutes. The game was close to slipping away before the clock expired.

Winning in-conference on the road is never easy.

I will take a blowout anytime, but this kind of game was exactly the type of game they needed, IMHO. If Wagler keeps this up (and it seems to me he is getting better,) when does B1G POY talk start, or does it?

I was behind and on a recording, so i was able to fast forward. I really didn't care to watch the deliberation on the hook and hold business, but in watching it back now, I don't think I really understand the rule.

I had a much bigger issue with the no call on the first Z travel off a rebound. He clearly would come down cleanly without bring bumped (just like the long pass in the Michigan/Wisky game yesterday). That should be called in my opinion.

I appreciate that Illinois went ahead and never lost the lead. In fact, Iowa didn't even get a shot to tie the game after like 3 minutes into the game. Everyone was trying to manufacture drama, which makes for better mass appeal obviously, but this game was never all that nerve-wracking.

Great win. It's fun to beat up on Iowa.

It doesn't. Just because of who the competition is with Smith. But, given the depth and talent in this conference, the fact he'll have every opportunity to be in the first team mix is wild.

it's an asinine rule that has no business being a thing.

This isn't hard. If you feel it was deliberate contact that was over the top, you have the ability as officials to call a flagrant foul, as has always been the case in the history of sport. The fact they've tried to make this some bizarre letter of the law rule was stupid 10 years ago, and it's stupid now.

rant over

Strong road win in the B1G. Tough environment, cr@ppy refs, faced second half adversity…..huge win.

I’ve watched Illini basketball since the days of EJ and beating MSU and Magic. I have never seen an ice cold freshman guard like Wagler. Bruce Douglass was a great freshman, so was Kiwane. Wagler is so mature and calm. Dude is an ice cold assassin.

Huge road win battling adversity and being on the wrong end of the whistle the last 3-4 minutes. Keaton and Kylan were huge down the stretch making all their FTs including all of their front ends.

Andrej needs to recognize when they are selling out to stop his drives and dish. Too many times in the second half he tried to score over 3 defenders.

Tomi just isn’t strong with the ball right now. Hopefully he can find some confidence. Think we just need to simplify his role right now and focus on having him cut under the basket along the baseline and pick and pop 3s. Hopefully that gets him going and gives him a little more confidence and energy on the boards. We need more from him on the boards.

And lastly I will echo the sentiment that Z should have played more the final 10 minutes. I wonder if he is sick or if his thumb is bothering him more that they are letting on. I’m leaning he was under the weather a bit. Would explain why he was wobbly on the boards.

I saw some say this is Collins’ worst NW team and I don’t buy that at all. They’ve been in all their BIG games. Can’t come out flat in that one or we will get beat. Go Illini!
