Illinois 76, Nebraska 50 Postgame

Harris moves his feet better than a seasoned veteran and has long arms to get into deflecting passes and making steals from behind......his offense will improve as he slows down on that side of the ball , but he is a Tasmanian Devil on D..........very important to have him disrupting from the beginning of the game .......BU has settled into a distinctive sub pattern with Harris and Epps........usually getting Epps in around the first media timeout......

Things are starting to fall into place and allowing us to get our transition offense going with the elevated defensive posture at the tip off......
Seems like TF quickness and hands with DMW length. Need some form coaching, don’t need to practice bad form when you already have it.

Usually his errant pass is to someone he knows sees the open lane to the basket or back door cut and should take it but doesn't. So, it looks like he is throwing the pass to the fan in the stands.
Not true-2 or 3 times a game he tries to throw a pass through two or three defenders as as if he can only see his teammate and not the defenders.
But, he is playing much better now and making better decisions. He is going to just get better as the season progresses!

BU's first plan has gone wrong or blown up on him quite a bit here and elsewhere in his career.

But the second plan is always, always, always better than the first. That's the #1 reason I have enormous faith in him. He's Coach MacGuyver. We're witnessing that again right now.
This is a good point. If you recall, he tried the switching D a few years back. Think it was Ayo's frosh season. They struggled and he went to a D that fought through screens and that's when that team started to improve. Then came Kofi and he had some adjustments to make. So, its not necessarily how good you are at strategy development. Anyone can get lucky and have a good strategy and not learn from it. Its how well you make adjustments to improve it.

"Everyone has a plan until they get punched in the mouth," Mike Tyson. Coach is really good at taking those punches and adopting.

There was one play that had me falling off the couch. The Illini were moving the ball around and it came to Shannon at about the top of the key. He stopped and held it for a second, and Nebraska players, who had been following the ball like a cat chasing a red dot, all stopped. A red carpet to the net was laid out and before Nebraska could react and get moving again, Shannon was laying it in. Glorious.

BTW, maybe I missed it, but does anyone know why that Nebraska player had a sports bra on under his jersey?

It's called a "bro" or a "manssiere".

1. We could end up having DMFW x 2 if these two continue to grow in defense

3. I didn't comment at the time out of frustration at foul-meggedon 2023, but Sencire put the hurt on Buie to the tune of 2-13 from the field. I had the thought the Buie must be allergic to left handed #1s.
Past 3 games SH has been ballin out on the defensive side
Sencire Harris played 9 minutes against Northwestern and had 4 fouls. He was not an impact player in that game. He played 15 minutes against Wisconsin, getting pulled early due to freshman-like offensive woes. I love the kid and his energy, but let's not overstate things.

I think he had two fouls in the first 40 seconds against Northwestern. He didn't impact it because he wasn't on the floor for essentially the entire first half.

Right. That's my point. It's hard to claim a guy played monstrous defense on a guy holding him 2-13 if he wasn't in the game. I think he provides an instant spark and will be a tremendous player.

Don't know if this is what it was, but a lot of athletes are now wearing those things to collect biometric data (heart rate, etc.) during games. Don't know exactly what they do with that data, but I'm sure someone who knows more about strength and conditioning could tell you.

On Harris, he eventually has to improve offensively for Illinois to reach its ceiling. I still think he has to play a major role right now, but it's ultimately a limiting factor if you have a guy out there who isn't a threat. It almost looks like he's just too keyed up to finish his shots, and that insane energy that serves him so well on the defensive end is hampering his ability to execute on offense. Hopefully that's something he can temper as he gets used to competing on this level.

As a general rule, I stay off game threads. There were plenty of "ugh!" moments, but I loved how we moved the ball. Keep it up and we'll win lots of games. Two more things: Epps is a stone cold killer and Rogers was excellent.
Agree completely. One area of improvement will be if Epps can feed Dain in the post. he missed a couple of opportunities during the game. Getting Dain more post touches will not only lead to him scoring more but also open up easier outside shots and weakside cuts to the basket as the defense increasingly needs to collapse down to help out on Dain's defender.

Wonderful things happen when Shannon leads. (Wonder if he and Coach had another sit-down or two about this).

And when Hawkins is playing like a team veteran. And The Boys play mad-dog-defense. As any good Coach will tell you... your offense gets ignited off your defense.

And when the M & M Boys are singing Sweet Twine Tunes from Three Land (no, not Maris and Mantle... Mayer and Melendez). And Epps and Harris and Rodgers and Big D are playing with energy and focus.

You might even call this type of play... ‘E-L-l.... ’... aw, you know.

Wonder if the club did come together and began to rally as a result of supporting their teammate whose locker is empty now. Adversity is known to often bring people together. And this team did not look together at all for a good long stretch.

What’s also nice is that Illini showed the capability of really stepping on the gas and going on a good roll when the game got tight. More of this, please.

And more games with a nice lead that don’t come down to the last possession or two.

Haha, I stand corrected and willingly eat crow on that fabulous hot take.

I'm always surprised by a stat I see in the boxscore. This morning, I was surprised to see that Harris had played half the game. He sat for such long stretches that it didn't feel like he really made an impact. I also felt like Dainja played a lot more than 16 minutes, but I guess that shows the impact he had while he was in.

That’s why I like to look at the box score in after watching the actual game. It has a dimension that the real-time experience can’t provide.

Human memory for an intense, action packed experience like a 40 minute basketball game is typically episodic, remembering particular events, a highlight reel in the mind, but very few people are capable of, or inclined to calculate the cumulative effect of each player in real time.

Wow, the Dainja stat surprises me as well. He must have played at least 10-12 in the first half - seemed like he was out there the entire game until his 2nd foul. I knew he was in less in the 2nd half, but still. His defense against Walker was really impressive.

I think at some point it's pretty clear that we have a pretty phenomenal coach. A ton of folks wrote this team off for dead after the Northwestern game
And they have arisen.
I have always known our coach is amazing. I support him 100%, even in the darkest times.

What I’m observing is interesting. I used to be a little disappointed that we sometimes don’t seem to adapt when teams take something away.

What I think I’m learning, is that his philosophy is to play how we play (execute as they all allude to) and not let the other team dictate it. I like that (theoretically).

Hope we can figure things when they aren’t going our way and we can play our style with confidence and smoothness.

It happens. He always does something game-changing, and it feels like he's out there all the time. I felt that way about RJ last night. I was surprised when I saw he had fewer minutes than Epps.
