It is pretty clear that in crunch time, the team puts themselves in position to let Ayo do his thing. Ok, the last two minutes, not the last 7 minutes.
Totally agree here, been beating that drum all year. Can't have Ayo go hero mode too early then not be coached back down.

I would like Curbelo to succeed just as much as anyone. In talking about development he has now played 19 games. I just don't see any difference between game 1 and game 19 that he has an understanding how to correct the mistakes he makes. Either he is not listening to what the coaches are telling him or the coaches are not working on his mistakes. I would just like to see him play in the flow of the game instead of thinking he has to make a play all the time. I think that what gets him in trouble. As I pointed before this team has to win now. Having players together like Ayo and Kofi don't come every year and Culbero does not show improvement in not turning the ball over and not taking crazy shots his minutes need to be limited.

FG 38.6
FT 69.6
3 pt 34.6

Agreed, not being the "go to guy" has to be an major adjustment
Add 6% to each of the above numbers and he would likely be less frustrated

As Calvin already said, Curbelo had more turnovers than assists his first 5 games and a better than 2 to 1 assist to turnover ratio since. He's clearly improved a lot

Be careful, you'll get your head bitten off if you criticize Curbelo. Maybe people are starting to finally see reality now. His minutes seem down too which means BU has seen enough of the poor out of control play on both sides of the ball.

KC has turned into a real banger. He was inflicting some pretty severe discomfort to a few or the cornhuskers in and around the basket. One husker went flying, with what I think KC probably thought was a "love tab."

Both KC and AD have made substantial improvement in a year. I would imagine we will see the same kind of improvement with AM and AC.

Turnovers are not the only story with him, poor shot selection and fouling or losing who he is to defends is another.

You are right. He looks like he is paying pick up games at Ruckers in NYC. There, everyone cheers at how flashy you look. Not at whether you made the shot/ pass or not. He has good talent but, still doesn't see the floor well. He finds people in moments of panic but, doesn't see them when they break open. A lot of his almost turnovers are because his teammates can save a ball from going out of bounds or they even catch it just before going out of bounds and are charged with the turnover themselves. The only teammate that he regularly finds when they get open is Ayo. I admit that he can become very good. But he currently costs us way too many scoring opportunities and has a very bad habit of getting lost on D.

I was too young to watch his team but were his turnovers like mind boggling or more like Ayo where he can turn it over 5 times and nobody even notices? I think the distinction is important
I played the game at the NAIA level, I agree with you. Kid has talent for days. It’s now just about letting the game slow down to him. Honestly I think he will be better in the tournament than he’s been in conference. Everyone knows the Big Ten is by far the best scout league. In two years he’s gonna be a monster.

Or that he’s wildly inconsistent and BU doesn’t force playing him. Idk how this is seen as “people are starting to finally see reality” 😂😂😂

I followed those teams. AC is pretty different from Deron IMO, despite both being excellent facilitators and floor generals. Deron did the freshman things you'd expect, some bad passes from decision-making, poor execution, misreads, or adjusting to the college game. Deron was solid right out of the gate, and had an exceptional feel for the flow of the game. He didn't look out of control like AC does. Deron was downright chubby as a freshman and could drive using his body more than AC has (I'd argue the game allowed more physicality as you go back in time). Deron was also better at creating space both from his physicality and his outside shot. Statistically, Deron was more efficient, but in AC's defense, the competition and schedule are really rough.

All that said, AC is special. In the world of coaching, there are mistakes [good], and then there are mistakes [stupid or lazy]. AC makes plenty of the former, and very few of the latter. He has moments he looks worse than he is, because he attempts things that most guys can't pull off. This is cherry-picking a bit, but AC's first 5 games he had 13 Assists on 16 TOs, which is miserable for a PG* where the benchmark is probably 2. Since then, he's had 70 assists and 33 TO.

I'm really glad he's been given the leash to develop. It's already paying off and will only snowball. I think BU has gotten some criticism at times on this message board because there's some that don't think he lets guys play. But the fact is he's played lots of freshman, so that's complete crap. If you can play smart and contribute, you play, end of story.

*less for a scoring guard like Ayo.
This is a really solid post.

Lot of ragging on Curbelo on here. Looking at freshman stats for a few of the best Illini PG's.

G/MPG/PPG/RPG/APG/TOG/FG%/FT%/3PT%

Curbelo: 19 / 20.4 / 7.8 / 3.1 / 4.4 / 2.6 / .462 / .766 / .158
McCamey: 35 / 27.3 / 8.2 / 2.9 / 3.3 / 2.5 / .364 / .627 / .340
Dee: 32 / 34.1 / 12.1 / 5.0 / 1.94 / .434 / .681 / .329
Deron: 32 / 27.1 / 6.3 / 3.0 / 4.5 / 1.84 / .426 / .533 / .354
Garris: 28 / 31.8 / 15.9 / 3.5 / 3.8 / 2.79 / .433 / .803 / .333
Douglas: 32 / 31.8 / 9.4 / 2.7 / 5.9 / 2.72 / .459 / .719 / .250
Harper: 29 / 32.2 / 8.3 / 2.6 / 5.4 / 2.28 / .413 / .717 / NA

Looks like AC compares pretty well on a lot less minutes per game. Obviously, the 3 pt shooting is a major problem!

It’s been 19 games. Usually that’s around the first two weeks of the conference schedule. And as someone else posted, after the first handful of games he has improved greatly. Look at the numbers. They tell a better story than your eyes.

So how many of Curbelo's "crazy" turnovers are because his teammates weren't looking, or not in a good position? Would you accept 10-15%?

Nobody is biting anyone's head off that I've seen. If you want to criticize, go ahead, but be reasonable and not reactionary about it...or you might get called out and forced to defend your position. Pretty standard internet forum stuff.

Looks like Belo has replaced DDW as this year’s playing time mistake. Kinda like a flashy Tate.

Exactly.....not all of the turnovers are on him. Or getting stuck in the lane because the rest of team is standing around watching him dribble. Get to an open spot he will find you.

Two years ago there were a lot of folks around here who were hyper critical of a different freshman guard who was wildly inconsistent, skinny, and mistake prone... and that kid was supposed to save the program...

The best thing about freshmen? They become sophomores.

It's not that there's nothing to criticize about his play, but you can't say he's not improving or that the coaches aren't working on his game
You must be the same guy that said that Curbelo was going to start over Frazier. Yes he is the perfect point guard. He can't shoot, he turns the ball over, he has difficulty staying with his man, he makes silly fouls and he believes in circus shot selection. But he does make one make one great pass a game. Yep that is the formula you need to win a Championship. Let him develop over the summer I more interested in winning a Championship.
