Good minutes by CH last night - came in and gave us a boost early. Tried a few too many in a clogged paint but he'll learn.

Curbelo is the X factor on the scouting report because the defense can't really prepare for him. He keeps them guessing and forces a reaction which opens up the floor.

Tonight was just not a good night for him. I told my brother that there are 3 things he tends to do every game.
1. Reach in and make a silly foul
2. Step out on the side
3. Dribble it off his foot

Maybe that is a scouting report LOL
I have a different list. Curbelo is a freshman, who is going to be one heck of a point guard for us. But he does do a few silly things every game.

1. Reach in and make a silly foul
2. Try to drive between two defenders
3. Drive the lane and get stuck with no one to pass to.

Please don't tell me how good Curbelo is.

That’s the problem with ratings based purely on data. Last night they were NOT the worst team in the BIG. They may have the worst record in the BIG, but last night they could have beaten many of the BIG teams.
It's not a problem with ratings it's just a reality.

It seems like people look at ratings and want them to mean something they were never intended to.

Interesting....seven pages of posts after a very close game and though I have read most (but not all), I have not seen one complaint about the officiating. Obviously, I either have reading comprehension problems or eyesight is horrible. But not one, nor can I think of any. May be a first for a B1G road game. But it is likely Nebraska fans are upset as they did not seem to get the home court calls afforded for the last 100 years. B1G Supervisor of Officials should be proud. But of course, it was the #2 team in the league at #14 (on a 25 game losing streak), so there's that....protect the cash cow.
This board cracks me up with all the reffing conspiracies. Like there’s a daily call with the refs and the league to say, “Ok, here’s who you’re going to favor tonight ...”

Post makes no sense
Okay, yeah, take out the "if". Should be an obvious "yes" to any reader, but it looks like most people read it the, um, normal way as I did not intend.

Essentially:
Damn, Ayo is good. Good enough to carry the entire team. So, how is this team not nearly unstoppable with all of the talent around him? Ayo is very good in teammate mode, too, and the team is way above average on the defensive end. I don't see the missing piece that so often leads to the Illini stuck in close games. Free throws attempted? Turnovers? Grabbing rebounds is worse spots than the other team?

Only five scorers tonight, but also only seven shooters and we badly outshot Nebby. Maybe the team is just deferring to Ayo and I'm too much of a fan to see it.

Problem here is Giorgi can’t even stay on the floor. What did he play 5 min with 3 fouls (1 being a tech), I think Hawkins may need to play some 5 for us. GB is really struggling now.
Can't always rate a player performance, when the zebras step in.

Curbelo is a 6' tall teenager, (19) playing with and against some of the largest and best collegiate talent in the world for the first time in his life. He has special skills. Good grief give him a chance to develop. I can't believe the critisism from people who probably never played the game. At least not at this level.
I'm ready now for the responses about how good you all were in high school. Yea. OK.

Take the W and burn the film.

Consistency is not this team's calling card. They've played down after wins more often than not, so I wasn't surprised they took this one to the edge. Makes it harder on us fans, but if you don't like roller coasters, head over to the lazy river log ride for your fun :p

That said, there were a lot of good plays in the game, they were able to get it to OT, and they've now rolled off FIVE in a row in a brutal conference. They just didn't have their A game/chip on their shoulder for 40 minutes. Usually better to learn from a win.

His assist/TO ratio is almost equal to DWill's freshman year.
I was too young to watch his team but were his turnovers like mind boggling or more like Ayo where he can turn it over 5 times and nobody even notices? I think the distinction is important

Probably. He was a freshman and liked to pass. Check some tape and circle back for us? I'm certainly not watching grainy video from 18 years ago.

Shouldn't have been. No dog in this fight but calls were equally as bad (or as good depending on your rooting interest) on both ends. It is nearing the end when BIG officials start swallowing their whistles and "managing" games. That is an NCAA tourney crew, one that you will see on TV in weeks to come whether you like them or not. They have worked their way up from MAC and SWAC over the years to where they are the Top 25% of officials in the game. I did not see much to complain about personally, so .... it is what it is.... there are far more important things to complain about ....from OOB plays to FT shooting. The answers to this team's success and destiny lie within what is within.... they control what they control

I'm not convinced the distinction is that important. Are you learning from your turnovers? Are your teammates? That you notice Curbelo's but not Ayo's really says more about you than the turnovers.

Deron had a different type of court vision, in my opinion. He just knew how to find guys in simple positions where they could score. The classic "2 inches beyond the reach of the defender and perfect for my guy" pass.

Technically no, but the NET matters and it's a rating system similar to Kenpom. We probably took a hit there last night too.
I fall in the really don’t care much about KenPom and Torvik ratings. I understand they serve a purpose and have some value, but checking the ratings five minutes after the game to see how it impacted the Illini’s ranking just seems silly to me. I don’t know if it is even possible, but one can get the sense that some people would be fine with a loss if our KenPom ranking went up — and maybe prefer it to a win where our ranking went down.

If you’re expecting rationality, you’ve come to the wrong place my friend.

If they can beat Northwestern, Nebraska and MSU who are at the bottom, then that would put the Illini at 13-3. A split of the tough 4 games puts them 15-5. That should win the conference.

I agree, in a couple of years we'll be looking for him to lead this team and make shots. BU is trying to get him in game to get experience. Haters need to remember he was the spark that started us be down 0-9 at the start of the game. To quote others "He is good"
